Information about the school
Our school is a central secondary school and the teaching languages are
Macedonian and Albanian, thus making it a mixed school. There are also
two other schools under its administration. The school is situated in the
centre of the village of Labunista and it counts a total number of 1125
students out of which 579 attend the lessons in Macedonian and 546 in
Albanian. Motivated by the aim of the project Building bridges which
makes differences get closer and divisions disappear, our school decided
to apply for the grant. The common activities that we are about to realize
in mixed groups are being a very important aspect of the overall effort to
reach multi-ethnic integration both in education as well as in society as
whole. The aim of the education based on multi-ethnic integration is for
the students speaking different languages to get used to interaction which
is needed in order to live in the Republic of Macedonia as a multi-ethnic
country. In order to gain the corresponding competences, it is necessary
that the students participate in common activities the aim of which is
diminishing the current prejudices concerning the members of the other
ethnic groups, to improve the multi-ethnic cooperation and to create
relations of interdependence among the different ethnic groups that
cohabitate in Macedonia.

The curricular and the extra-curricular activities in which students of


different ethnic background participate are very important for the
improvement of the multi-ethnic relations which carry the burden of
stereotypes and prejudices. Throughout the common activities in mixed
ethnic groups, students will learn how to communicate with each other
thus getting to know what they have in common and what is different,
both on an individual as well as on group level. Common activities in
mixed ethnic groups also provide the necessary contact with the others, a
contact that makes the interaction possible and that under certain
circumstances can contribute in diminishing the prejudices towards the
others. The corresponding contact among groups of members speaking
different languages is considered one of the most efficient ways of fight
against prejudices. If members of a certain group are allowed to
communicate with members of the other group, there will be the
possibility for them to understand and respect the others points of view,
preferences and ways of life. In this way, the problems among people of
different background should decrease and the interaction among them
should improve. In order for the interpersonal contact to be proper (to
lead towards diminishing prejudices and improving the interaction) the
following conditions should be fulfilled:
-it should be based on cooperation

-it should provide equal status

-it should lead towards interpersonal relations

-there should be social and institutional support

In addition, we submit the detailed plan of activities our students are


about to realize having in mind the fact that our school is a multi-ethnic
one and it is a solid basis for realization of such projects.
