French Still-Life Painting from Chardin to

ines the role of floral still-life paintings in 19th-
century France. With more than 60 works by
more than 30 artists, the show challenges the
conventional perception of the genre as
supremely traditional, reframing it instead as a
vehicle for expression, discovery, and experi-
mentation. Paintings by lesser-known artists
such as Anne Vallayer-Costerone of only four
women admitted into the Acadmie Royale
before the French Revolution and revered in
her time for her virtuosic depictions of blos-
somssit alongside those by boldface masters
like Delacroix, Czanne, and Manet. The still-
life mode is presented as ripe for aesthetic
problem solving, as Renoirs use of warm, dap-
pled light gives way to van Goghs startling
angles and hues. Ravishing as these canvases
may be, this exhibition makes clear that they
are much more than pretty pictures (Octo-

Society gures sat for portraits clad in caftans and

mosque-like follies were built in public parks. Tiny

Scavolini, the Italian purveyor of luxury
kitchens for over 50 years, announces the
Ki Collectiona new vision for the kitchen
and bath. Created in collaboration with
Nendo, the Japanese design studio headed
by designer Oki Sato, the collection combines
Scavolinis renowned craftsmanship with
Nendos unique approach to design. With its
rened detailing and elements of surprise, the
Ki Collection is nothing short of spectacular.

The concept behind the Ki Collection is to create space and design freedom by hiding the kitchen with a wooden shelf and white bowl. Within the kitchen,
which includes linear, island and peninsula compositions, containers rest on shelves that function as wall units. With its rigorous interpretation of minimalist
and contemporary taste, the collection offers a new way of living within the kitchen area. Combining quality Italian craftsmanship with nely-worked design
details, Ki is available in a range of decorative nishesincluding three wood-effect nuancescreated specically for Scavolini.

THE NEW COUNTER CULTURE

With the rise of the middle class, advances in technology, and the liberation of women, the American
kitchen has progressed from behind the scenes to center stage. BY BEE WIL SON
A few years ago, knife expert Peter Hertzmann noticed a new trend.

the best job of cutting an onion. They wanted chefs knives they
could display as objets dart, he says. If you spend $1,900 on a
limited-edition Bob Kramer knife, crafted from 160 layers of hand-
forged Damascus steel, you dont want to hide it in a plastic sleeve at
the back of a drawer. You want it to be seen. The parading of chefs
knives doesnt sound like a major change, but its part of something
bigger. The kitchen, once hidden and unsung, has become the highest-
status room in the house, and its inuence percolates throughout
our living spaces.
True, knives as status symbols are nothing new. For most of the
20th century, hosts would display their status by ostentatiously slic-
ing roast meats in front of their guests in the dining room, using
decorative carving knives and long silver-plate forks, or showing
off with a loudly buzzing electric blade. Kitchen knives, on the other
hand, were utilitarian things. They spoke of the tedium of chopping,
something you wanted to protect your guests from thinking about.
But now, when you visit many peoples homes, your hosts want you
to notice their fancy chefs knivesGlobal, Chroma, Shunas a way
of hinting at their dexterity with a chopping board. Z

Whats true of knives is true of kitchen design in general. It has

become an open-plan showroomthe single area in a house that
people want to draw attention to. Once, two dishwashers was the
mark of a luxurious kitchen. Today it might be two kitchen islands,
so that both halves of a couple can participate in the theater of cook-
ing simultaneously. Sous vide machines and Thermomixes have
taken over from home cinema as the ultimate form of entertainment.
In our endlessly online lives, the screen has lost its power to be spe-
cial, no matter how vast or at or HD. Whats special is a dish of eggs
Benedict that you made with your own fair hands from sourdough
English mufns, home-cured ham, and sous vide hollandaise. As
you eat, you dont want to vanish into some stuffy dining room, but
rather to linger in this magical space with its assortment of cleverly
engineered appliances.
So much attention has been lavished on the kitchen that it has
even started to invade the rest of the house. When youve spent
countless months and thousands of dollars creating your dream
kitchenincluding combi steam ovens, a Spiral
wine cellar, and sparkling water on tapother
rooms can feel disappointing by comparison.
You enter the living room and think, Where
are my toys? Hence the trend for refrigera-
tors in playrooms and Nespresso machines
in bedrooms. Kitchen work tops are some-
times reclaimed and used as desks so that

Once, the point of having a kitchen was to conceal the smells and
sounds of cooking from the rest of the house. In the 19th century,
professional cooks toiled in the pollution and squalor of kitchens
organized around gigantic cast-iron ranges. This room was tucked

hear designers talk much of labor saving anymore, because cook-
ing is no longer necessarily seen as labor. For the kind of person
who owns a Jura Coffee Center, oak-top prep tables, and a Gaggenau
warming drawer for proong dough, cooking has become a week-
end treat after a week spent staring at computers. The new glam-
orous appliances with which we ll our kitchens are not about
reducing the time we spend there, but about making it such a com-
forting space that we may never want to leave. Its a place where
you get the tactile satisfaction of being an artisan, but with the free-
dom to do it at leisure.

and built-in heaters. By 1932, Thermador established itself as a high-quality appliance manufacturer. In 1947,
Cranston and engineer Fred Pence invented the first built-in wall oven and cooktop and introduced stainless
steel to home appliances. Cranston was inducted into the National Kitchen & Bath Association Hall of Fame in
1989, and he is credited with launching the kitchen design industry.

manufacturing jobs to Asia. Here, they turned abandoned docklands
into a model of sustainable living. My apartment is one of about 60

ED: Well, then, what were the major cosmetic changes?

MN: The kitchen was too design-y for me. It was black and white,
and I didnt like the high contrast or the all-modern materials. I had
the white MDF cabinet doors resurfaced with oak, though I left the
existing black frames. I had the white glass backsplash wall replaced
with black ceramic tile. The new materials soften the contrast and
help tie in the rest of the furniture.

ED: Isnt dark tile difcult to keep clean?

MN: Not at all. You have to be careful with dark composite counter-
tops, which tend to scratch easily, but the black tiles are a lot easier to
keep clean than the white glass that was there before. Plus, I confess
I am not a perfectionist about housekeeping.

ED: About the palettewere you treated badly by color when you
were a child?

MN: I dont dislike color. I can easily fall in love with a coral or tur-
quoise or mustard. Back in the 80s, my home was all Andy Warhol
and Fiorucci colors. But, for me, color is easy in and easy out. My
infatuation cools as quickly as it ignites. I just cant commit to any
color for the long term. Furthermore, as an interior designer and
creative director I work with color all day long, so its very calming
for me to come home to an all-neutral environment. Z

Black walls show everything, says Nilssonthe higher
gloss of black paint you use, he explains, the better the
wall preparation needs to be. He used matte-finish
blackboard paint in his apartment because he liked the
idea of scribbling on the walls with chalk, but, he cautions,
its hard to get an even coat with blackboard paint.

One of the difficulties of living with a lot of things is

keeping the place from looking chaotic, says the
acquisitive designer. To tame the clutter, he likes glass-
front cabinets. They tend to organize the collectibles and
contain them in a way that keeps them from seeming
overwhelming. They also cut down on dusting, which is
very important.

Mixing dining chairs, says Nilsson, creates visual interest.

I like diversity in all things, he explains. To me, its like
looking at a variety of personalities gathered for a dinner
party. You can rearrange them whenever you like, and if

Most gatherings start out with drinks upstairs in the drawing room,

No matter the season, the hosts and their guests nearly always end
up in the garden, stepping through doors in the family room that fold
away to create an easy ow. I guess its the New Zealander in me,
but I love the idea of indoor/outdoor living, Angela says. And its
such a luxury to be able to step out into your own garden in London.
The other noteworthy luxury is the expansive use of marble.
Angela points out that the stone oors keep the house cool in sum-
mer and, with radiant heating beneath them, maintain warmth in
winter. And her modeling experience has taught her that marble
bathrooms are attering to everyone: I mean, you ought to like
what you see in the mirror when you wake up in the morning.
My style used to be quite minimalist, Radcliffe says, noting that
he now likes to see more beauty, or even fun, in an interior. But as
our family life has evolved, weve gotten good at imagining how
well live in a home and foreseeing our future needs. I can be more
about the aesthetics and chasing down stellar pieces, and Angela is
more inclined to think about where our son and his friends can play
and study in a new house. So the balance feels pretty perfect.

FROM THE EXTERIOR, the townhouse ts right in with the other
quietly opulent residences on a leafy street on Manhattans Upper
East Side. Its oor plan is no less classic, consisting of 10 chunky
rooms, all in the same proportion, according to designer Ann Pyne.
Perhaps it was this very sameness that inspired the designer, head
of the renowned New York rm McMillen, Inc., to give each room a
strong, aesthetically distinct identity all its own. This is a house of
dramatic transitions. To move from the living room, with its cloud-
hue palette, to the deep-tone library is to feel as if youve stepped
into The Wizard of Oz at the point in which the movie bursts into
brilliant Technicolor from retro black and white.
The designer and her clients, a professional couple, are longtime
friends. The wife worked closely with Pyne on the project, a process
she describes as revelatory: It was opening up a new world, like
reading Emily Dickinson for the rst time.
The wife, in fact, initiated the idea for the monochromatic living
room. My order for it was that it had to be white and oaty, Pyne
recalls. A muted room can be difcult to pull off: Monotony is an
ever-present threat. Yet Pyne keeps it handily at bay by layering
on texturesfor visual interest, she saysincluding an array of
luxurious fabrics, from the sofas linen damask to the pale, almost
chalky gray velvet upholstery on a pair of fauteuils.
Pyne retained the existing Louis XVIstyle paneling and then
added period-inspired plaster sconces, so that the living room

appears at rst glance neoclassical, from the twist of its draper-
ies to the garden statuary set before the French windows. And yet
for all its 18th-century underpinnings, it contains modern elements
as well, such as a striking cylindrical table of polished steel with a
1920s feela piece that is actually contemporaryone of two low
tables by artist Silas Seandel in the room.
The design for this area coalesced by accident, after a gilt bronze
Louis XV clock, which was to be a focal point, crashed to the ground.
While it was being repaired, Pyne hung an artifact from a distinctly
different era in its place: a portrait of Andy Warholthe master of
Pop himselfby the photographer Francesco Scavullo. And there,
with Warholian impudence, it remains. Its placement was a tipping
point that made the room come alive, Pyne recalls.
The juxtaposition of drastically different periods imparts a liveli-
ness, she adds. It may also be inevitable: McMillen was founded in
1924 as a bastion of tradition; Pyne, by contrast, has always been

interests, writing ction and teaching among them, before arriving

at McMillens door; she assumed the top job after her mothers death
last spring. The family is now also represented by a third generation,
Anns daughter, Elizabeth Pyne, who runs the newly established
McMillen Plus, a division geared toward younger clients.
In the case of this townhouse, its rooms are discrete: Almost none
affords a view of another. The challenge was to have continuity
throughout, Pyne says. She worked toward this in myriad ways
for example, by having all the oors stained a deep blue, inspired by
a large painting of peacocks by John Wesley in an upstairs stairway.
These exotic creatures became a subtle leitmotif through the house.
Rather than toning down the dining rooms gilt-edge pillars, which
seemed almost gaudy at rst, she decided to just have fun with it,
she says. The sparkly silver-and-gold geometric wallpaper and pat-
terned chairs match the ash of the architectural elements.
While the jewel-tone library on the oor above is a place of almost
hallucinatory colora nighttime room, Pyne saysthe room that
sits lowest in the house, contiguous to its garden, is a place of pure
daylight. The clients wanted a garden room no one had ever seen
before, the designer says. The springboard for the room was a set
of closet doors designed by San Francisco decorator John Dickinson
that Pyne found at auction. She lined the walls with these, even cre-
ating new ones to match as needed. The effect is of an urban town
square, a magic one, where the houses have mirrored windows and,
thanks to an artfully stenciled oor, the ground is cobblestone.
What stitches the design of this residence together is a philosophy
more than anything else. I think there should be a sense of slight
confrontation when you go into a room, Pyne explains. Which,
come to think of it, animates each and every one of these spaces.
Only, it takes a while to see it.

THE FIREPLACE in the entrance hall of Manolo Marchs apart-
ment in Madrid was originally meant to have an elegant mirror sur-
round. That, however, was before the Spanish bon vivant decided
to host a party during construction. To hide the work-in-progress,
he installed a large white board in front of the replace and lled a
basket with cans of spray paint so his guests could take part in a little
homemade grafti. At the end of the evening, he found the result
so pleasing that he decided to keep ithe simply cut a hole in the
middle for the hearth. March wasnt the only one to like it. He recalls
a visit from one of Spains leading art dealers: She came in and said,
Manolo, that picture is really interestingId like to know the name
of the artist, he says with a laugh.
March certainly knows about art. His grandfather, Juan March,
was a banker, businessman, and collector who ranked as the seventh
richest man in the world after World War II. His father, Bartolom,
amassed a stellar art collection, which included works by Velzquez, PORTRAIT BY RICARDO LABOUGLE

Picasso, Monet, and van Gogh. March remembers a magnicent

Goya in the drawing room of their Madrid home, as well as sculp-
tures by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth in the garden of the
familys property on Majorca. The Marchs were also among the best
clients of the Paris-based decorating rm Maison Jansen during
the second half of the 20th century. My father was always redoing
houses, he says. All my life, Ive been surrounded by beauty.

trict, near the American Embassy. The 1930s building was designed

by Diego Mndez, one of the architects of the colossal Spanish
Civil War monument called the Valley of the Fallen. March says
he chose the 5,400-square-foot space both for its glittering views
over one of Madrids main arteries, the Paseo de la Castellana,
and for its spacious, classical layout. The corner dining room is
anked by a sitting room and a drawing room, an ideal setup for
entertaining, whether its for one of Marchs small luncheons for
eight or his cocktail parties for 200with a DJ.
Another bonus was that the place required little renovation. March
simply stained the wood oors a deeper shade and gave the walls a
white-lacquer nish. I like the texture, the reection, he explains.
He also transformed a former bedroom into a second kitchen and
demolished a wall so that it now opens onto the main drawing
room. March oversaw the rest of the interior design himself with
assistance from some decorator friends, such as Patricia Sanchiz
(whose most famous client is the current Spanish king, Felipe VI).
She helped to source rugs and designed the steel-and-cotton frames
around the windows.
After spending so much of his life in opulent settings, Marchs main
goal here was to create a more laid-back, personal environment. I
was coming from a house that measured almost 65,000 square feet,
and I wanted something really cozy and casual, he says. Its very
liberating. Indeed, the entrance hall, with constantly changing
colors from funky LED lighting, sets the tone at the door. An open
kitchen allows him to whip up impromptu meals with friends. And
a table on casters in the dining room can be easily moved to accom-

modate meals at a huge, half-moon corner banquette. At other times

century copy of an Egyptian statue from the Louvreone of several
striking sculptures in the apartment, including a papier-mch lion-
ess in the drawing room.
Many of the other furnishings have links to Marchs past. The Jos
Mara Sert screen in the entrance hall was in his bedroom as a child,
the two Georges Jacob chairs in the dining room are family heir-
looms, and a pair of Plexiglas cocktail tables decorated by Spanish
artist Manolo Mompo were originally conceived for the terrace of
the Majorca home. March also inherited a number of works from
his fathers art collection, among them gold sculptures by Brancusi
and Jean Arp and two paintings by Hubert Robert, which now mix
seamlessly with more contemporary acquisitions, including works
by Santiago Castillo and Stephen Conroy.
Marchs favorite pieces, however, date back to the 18th centurya
group of portraits of madrileos by Lorenzo Tiepolo that hang in
the dining room. They were so modern for their time, he explains.
They almost look like photographs. Then, as an aside, he adds that
a similar set is part of the Spanish Royal Collection.

The consummate Hollywood designer
Martyn Lawrence Bullard conjures an exotic paradise for a
Malibu couple, inspired by a passion for Bali

What is life without a little glamour? Its a question Martyn Law-
rence Bullard, the British designer, star of Bravos Million Dollar
Decorators, and keeper of a celebrity client list as diverse as Cher,
Cheryl Tiegs, Tommy Hilger, and Ozzy Osbourne, asks himself at
the start of every project. Famed for his extravagant interiors, the
author of Live, Love & Decorate counts castles, villas, ranches, and,
most recently, Saudi Arabias royal palace among his commissions.
For commercial property developer Judah Hertz and his wife, Astrid,
a fashion stylist, tapping Bullard to oversee the creation of their fan-
tasy home was the easiest decision they made in the three years it took
to realize it. Not that the design process was difcult. Martyn under-
stood exactly what we would love, Astrid says. He never had to con-
vince us about any of his design decisions, which were always right.
The couple came to know Bullards ebullient work through their
Malibu, California, neighbor Kid Rock, who had tapped the fear-
less designer to conceive of a Balinese-style oasis that the musician
could call home. We were enchanted by how transporting it was to
be in that housewe never considered another designer, or style,
after that, says Astrid, even though Bullards Asian approach would
be a bit of an about-face for the pair, whose previous Malibu house
was done in typical California ranch style.
But before Bullard could embark on the project, there was the
matter of the Southwestern-style home that stood on the prop-
erty. It looked like a giant Taco Bell, he recalls. We tore most of

it down and remodeled what was left entirely. Indeed, any trace
of the original is undetectable amid the trio of Balinese pavilions,
stepped terraces, courtyard gardens, and reecting pools of this
16,000-square-foot Shangri-la set on a cliff overlooking the Pacic,
with breathtaking views of the Southern California coastline.
To give the couple a clear idea of what he envisioned for the
enclave, he took them straight to the source; on several trips to Bali,
the designer insisted they stay in a traditional home to determine
exactly what they loved about it. The list was long, not least of which
was the craftsmanship that seemed to go into every square inch of
the space. We were so moved by the artistic wood carvings, as well
as the serenity of the decor, says Astrid.
But their ardor for all things Balinese extended beyond their
accommodations. The Indonesian black clay roof at the Bulgari
resort there, the ubiquitous green lava stone, and the split gates, or
candi bentar, that serve as entrances to the countrys open-air places
of worship all captivated them.
Bringing Bali to Malibu could have been tricky, but Bullard struck
all of the right notes while avoiding clich. He had the roof repro-
duced, sourced the lava stone in Bali, and borrowed inspiration from
the gate design for the grand terraced steps that lead to the gardens.
The house may be inspired by Indonesian architecture, but it is lled
with pieces from India, Africa, Portugal, and Morocco. The key to
any successful interior is to avoid a theme, says Bullard. So there
are Indian chandeliers, British colonial chairs and tables, Chinese

lacquer pieces, and Dutch colonial furniture. Its a very mixed bag,
very yin and yang, the designer says.
Indeed, even when Astrid suggested she wanted a proper bar that
married the Jazz Age with Indonesian avor, he didnt inch. It is
exactly what I got, she says.
Bullard stopped at nothing to achieve the exotic vibe that per-
meates the home. He found an 18th-century tribal house in Java
and repurposed it in the powder room. An antique cabinet that he
brought back from Kyoto, Japan, served as the inspiration for the
kitchen cabinets. The extraordinary bed in the master bedroom
was built from the facade of an Indonesian palace. The guest room,
which features an 18th-century wedding bed, is upholstered all over
in a custom-designed Indonesian-inspired fabric. In the bar, the
stenciling on the grass cloth wallpaper was applied with black coffee
and tea. Salvaged carvings from ancient Javanese buildings clad the
striking coffered ceiling in Judahs study, where the leather-bound
classics he has collected over the years line the shelves.
Such dogged pursuit of authenticity is a Bullard trademark, but
he admittedly got a bit of help from Mother Nature when it came to
replicating life on a tropical island. The glass doors that soar 30 feet
in the living room open out onto the ocean, while a magnicent
inner courtyard brings the outdoors into the interior rooms. Add
the unwavering sunny days on the California coast and the effect is
undeniably seductive.
Its a wonderful, calming lifestyle, Bullard says. Theres some-
thing very magicaland glamorousabout that kind of living.

f or richness of history and for grandeur, no Roman
palace surpasses the Palazzo Colonna, at the foot of the Quirinal
Hill. Not even the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles outdoes the pomp
and splendor of its Sala Grande. The Bronzinos and the Tintorettos
lining the walls of its renowned gallery attest to the Colonna fam-
ilys enduring wealth and prestige. When the architect and designer
Achille Salvagni received a commission to create an apartment on
the top oor of the palace, the challenge, he says, was to honor the
history of the building and yet to work in a very light way. His cli-
ents were a young couple with two small daughters; he didnt want
the past to weigh them down.
The large raw space, just under the palaces roof, had never been
lived in. Even the servants quarters were on a lower oor. The wife
had grown up in a Venetian palazzo and had inherited several his-
torical pieces, including a spectacular 18th-century mirror; Salvagni
uses them as anchors, surrounding these antiques with furniture
of his own design. (He is the creator of two collections: the Achille
Salvagni line of carpets, lighting, and furniture; and, with his cousin
Fabio Gnessi, the Aldus collection of objects.)
Among the most striking of his pieces is the seven-foot square
brass-base cocktail table in the living room, its surface covered with
a butter-yellow mantle of stingray skins. I didnt want this table
to overwhelm the space, Salvagni explains. I wanted it to be very
calma peaceful conversation center. The stately replace in the
living room is clad mostly in Noir Saint Laurent, a French marble that
was popular during the Baroque era and again in the Deco period.
Its interior is peperino, a gray volcanic rock that was already being
used by the Etruscans and thats often found in the hearths of Roman
palacesSo its evident that were not in Paris but in Rome.
The rst thing that catches your eye in the dining room is that
ornate Venetian mirror. Salvagni designed the huge oak table, with

bronze inlays and a bronze frame, to accompany it; he was thinking
of the massive Neapolitan tables that found their way into grand
Italian mansions in the 1930s, but he wanted something more con-
temporary and, as usual, lighter. The dining room doors are made
of black-stained oak tted with panels of glowing Fortuny silk, but
whats most unusual about them are the vertical bronze belts down
the centers, inspired by one of the intricate Roman mosaics in the
celebrated gallery downstairsIts really insane, Salvagni says.
Because of the somewhat peculiar way the space is laid out, the
bedrooms, which are at one end, had to be connected with the liv-
ing and dining rooms at the other, via a corridor. Salvagni created a
long gallery with a rounded vault and installed a breathing space at
the center in the form of a small, square room with walls covered in
velvet; the scarlet doors are velvet, too. Theyre not the only splash
of color amid the apartments predominant ivory and bronze. With a
nod to the 20th-century French decorator Jean Royre, he designed
egg-shape rose chairs for either side of the replace. And a myste-
rious stairway is carpeted in sea-blue silk. It leads from the living
room to a curtain and a bookshelf that covers an unused secondary

tional space, Salvagni thought of The Leopard, Luchino Viscontis
sumptuous 1963 lm, and its Sicilian palace with its secret corners
that have no function except to attract the eye, he says.
The designer didnt want to slice up the high vault of the master
bedrooms ceiling, so he came up with a low wall thats more like
a screen, of black-tinted oak and textured wallpaper, to divide the
space into bedroom and dressing area. He wanted the bathroom to
feel more like a powder room than a wet area, so he installed oak
planks on the oor and a dark Ralph Lauren pinstripe fabric on the
wall, hung a 1930s Venini chandelier, and placed a Baroque Vene-
tian stool (another family heirloom) underneath it. I really like the
sense of calm and beauty, he says, contrasting with the moder-
nity of the tub. Equally sleek nickel-and-glass doors lead to a steam
shower and bath.
Both he and the clients are pleased with the outcome. The projects
hes worked on, Salvagni says, have always involved something that
had some history before me. When he rst looked at the raw space
at the top of the palace he saw enormous potential in the freedom it
allowed, but he also wanted the apartment he created to pay hom-
age to the splendid building that housed it. I didnt want to impose
a new life on that shell, he says. I wanted the shell to transmit the
history that the building breathes in every corner.
