BALDWINSVILLE CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT Matthew J. MeDonald, Superintendent of Schools 29 East Oneida Street 315-638-6043 (Office) Baldwinsville, New York 13027 315-638-6041 (Fax) May 15, 2017 Dear Parent/Guardian: Ithas come to my attention that there have been a few diagnosed cases of pertussis, otherwise known as whooping cough, within the Baldwinsville Central School District. Nearly all of the students within the district are vaccinated against pertussis having received the last ‘vaccine (Tdap) as a requirement to attend 6" grade. Pertussis is classified as a vaccine preventable disease. Pertussis causes a hacking, dry cough that can last several weeks or even months. Pertussis is spread from person to person by cough droplets from an infected person. It may begin like a common cold (sneezing, runny nose, low-grade fever and mild cough). Within two (2) weeks, the cough usually becomes more severe and may be followed by a high pitched “whoop” sound. If your child develops signs as listed above, or if you are concerned about your child’s health, please contact your own health care provider to discuss your concern. ‘The district’s custodial staff has taken extra cleaning measures to disinfect classrooms and other common areas. We are providing a link to the New York State Department of Health Pertussis Fact Sheet for additional reference: https://www.-health.ny.gov/publications/2171/ Respectfully, POC (liga ~ Matthew J.
