Testing Procedures - Pulse Jet Engine

Required equipment:
1. Propane Tank
2. Sparklers/Blow Torch
3. Propane Hose
4. Pallet
5. Data Recording Equipment
6. Leaf Blower/Air Compressor
7. Paper and pencil or computer
Testing Process:
1. Turn on all needed equipment
2. Connect the Fuel Injector to the Propane Tubing.
3. Start the feeding of air into the intake as the flow of propane is slowly introduced.
4. Ignite the Sparkler/Blow Torch and hold in towards the combustion chamber. Ignition
should occur.
5. Run the Pulse Jet for 30 Seconds while incrementally recording different heat outputs of
several different parts of the Pulse Jet body. Making sure to take measurements in 5 degree
intervals.
6. After 30 seconds have elapsed cut off the flow of propane to stop the combustion process.
7. Let the Pulse Jet completely cool before any more tests are conducted.
Potential issues while testing:
1. Running the pulse jet at to high a temperature and/or for to long a time period. As this can
cause implosions and cause the pulse jets structure to become compromised.
2. Feeding an incorrect mixture of fuel to air that can cause potential fire dangers such as
flare-outs
Potential Hazards:
1. Flare outs can cause a potential fire hazard
2. The extreme heat radiating from the pulse jet can cause dangers to someone standing too
near to the pulse jet
Initial conditions:
1. Open area with non flammable materials or vegetation
2. Non humid day
3. No extreme temperatures (keep between 65-80 degrees)
