was on the boat when the fish was caught, helps hold it up.

A dollar and 25 cents in quarters weighs
about one ounce.
That’s how close Roger Hellen, 38, of
Franksville, Wis., is to breaking the record
for the world’s largest brown trout set last
September on the Big Manistee River by
Rockford resident Tom Healy.
The trout Healy caught, and the weight
to beat for the record books, is 41 pounds
and 7 ounces. Even though the 41-pound 8-
ounce brown trout Hellen caught on Friday,
July 16 in Lake Michigan near Racine, Wis.
is bigger, it may be one ounce away from
breaking the record.
According to the rule book of the
International Game Fish Association
(IGFA), “to replace a record fish weighing
25 pounds or more, the replacement must
weigh at least one half of 1 percent more
than the existing record.”
The math gets tricky, but Jim Vitek,
world records coordinator for the IGFA,
crunched the numbers.
“I think it would be a tie,” he said. “We
see them. Ties are definitely not uncom-
mon.”
A brown trout would have to be 41
pounds, 9 ounces to break the record,
according to Vitek, who added that every-
thing right now is speculation because
nothing yet is official.
Hellen caught the fish at the Salmon-
A-Rama fishing contest, sponsored by
Salmon Unlimited, in Racine, a city halfway
between Chicago and Milwaukee. He not
only landed the trout, but also the grand
prize of the tournament, which fetched him
$10,700.
“We knew it was a brown trout. We
knew it was big,” Hellen said in a telephone
interview with the News Advocate. When
he got the fish onto his boat, he said he was
“absolutely floored.”
“We never expected it to be that big,”
he said. “We were lucky. As soon as it hit
the net, it spit the hook. The whole thing

Tom Healy of Rockford, right, and fishing guide Tim Roller, left, with the current
world record holder. Healy may soon have to share the record.
“It’s been overwhelming. It’s
really been something else.
It’s one of those things you
never plan on.”

went just about as smooth as you can
think.”
It’s also been a wild ride since
Friday.
“It’s been overwhelming. It’s really
been something else,” he said. “It’s
one of those things you never plan
on.”
Hellen eventually took the brown
trout to a meat market so it could be
weighed on a certified scale. This is
where it weighed in at 41 pounds and
8 ounces.
At the very least, Hellen will claim
the Wisconsin state record, according
to Karl Scheidegger, a fisheries biolo-
gist at the Wisconsin Department of
Natural Resources.
Wisconsin has the records broken
up into two categories: inland and
outlying waters. If everything checks
out with Hellen’s trout, it will easily
break the Wisconsin state record of
36 pounds, 8 ounces, set on Aug. 23,
2004.
“It’s definitely a state record,”
Scheidegger said.
It remains to be seen how it will
work out with the world record.
Scheidegger said it’s usually not
that close.
“When you’re getting into fish
those size and (discussing) ounces,
that’s cutting a fine line,” he said.
“Generally, there’s a half pound (dif-
ference) at least. It usually doesn’t
come down to ounces.”
Hellen said the two fish are almost
identical in size. He’s currently in the
beginning stages of the paperwork
that needs to be sent to the state and
IGFA, but isn’t too concerned about
it.
“Whether there’s a record or not,
I guess it really doesn’t matter. A
record’s just a record,” he said.
Healy said he wasn’t upset when
he heard the news that his record
might be broken less than a year later.
“Great for him,” he said. “Now, we
got one world record brown trout on
each side of the lake. Maybe some-
body will go out in the middle of the
lake and catch a bigger one yet.”

‘What’s for
dinner’ now has
new meaning
— and a new
answer
On Monday morning, as
I was leaving for work, my
husband asked me what we
were having for dinner.
He asks me that ques-
tion almost every day, and I
don’t know why he bothers,
since my answer is almost
always “Whatever you feel
like cooking, honey.” I’m not
much of a cook, as anyone
who knows me will tell you.
On Monday, however,
I answered the usual din-
ner question in a way that
surprised him. “Steak,” I
told him. “Or maybe brats,
or pork chops.” The what’s-
for-dinner question was
easy, because at noon the
chamber ambassadors and
staff were scheduled to do
a ribbon cutting at the new
River Street Stock Yard and
Spirits, now open at the
corner of River and Maple
streets, in the former City
Drug location.
It’s great to see that this
much-anticipated new store
is finally open, and not just
because it solved Monday’s
dinner quandary. It’s great
because this is another qual-
ity grocery, deli and meat
option in Manistee County,
owned and operated by Lars
Berentsen and Dee Weston.
It’s also a great thing
because every investment
in our county by a business
owner makes an impact on
the entire county. A rising
tide lifts all boats and the
more businesses there are,
the more businesses there
will be.
In our community — in
any community — it’s the
businesses that help to cre-
ate our distinctive character
and the best way for us to
nurture the unique charac-
teristics of our community is
to buy locally whenever we
can and urge others to do
the same.
It’s pretty straightfor-
ward — if you want to live
in a community where
you have lots of shopping
options, you’ve got to spend
your money in that commu-
nity whenever you can.
Porterhouse steaks — in
case you’re wondering. Eat
well this week.
