WHAT’S HAPPENING
■ Dances are being held from 7 to 11 p.m. the third Saturday of each month at the Mecosta VFW. The dances are open to the public and cost $5 admission. The Lost Country Band plays during the dances. The dances are being held to promote something fun for young and old. Food also is available. For more information, contact Deb Stieg at (231) 972-1953. ■ The Mecosta County Rod and Gun Club holds trap and sporting clay shoots every Saturday. Trap shoots start at 10 a.m. and sporting clays start at 1 p.m. The club is located four miles west of Mecosta on M-20. For more info: Contact Jack Hays at (231) 592-1587. For more activities, visit www.mecostarodandgunclub.orgdish to pass. Please call (231) 660-0180 to RSVP. ■ Knitting circle will begin meeting at 4 p.m. on Fridays at the Barryton Public Library. Knitters of all levels are encouraged to come and learn or share knitting techniques. ■ Morton Township will be starting a recycling program, on the third Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Canadian Lakes Fire/Rescue Station located at 8260 100th Ave., Stanwood. ■ The Mecosta County Rod & Gun Club will hold a Sporting Clays Tournament on July 24. Rounds will start at 1 p.m. For the purposes of score, only your first two rounds will be counted. A plaque will be given for the top score in two rounds. This event is open to the public. The Club is located 4 miles West of Mecosta on M-20. ■ An AARP Driver Safety Program will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on July 27 and 29 at the Mecosta County Commission on Aging in Mecosta. The classroom course helps older drivers become more aware of the changes in vision, hearing and reaction time due to aging and how to adjust driving accordingly. There are no tests. The class is taught in two, four-hour sessions over a two-day period. The course reviews basic rules of the road and the typical types of violations that occur with older drivers, such as failure to yield the right-of-way, improper left turns and entering and exiting expressways. Tips are given to improve these situations. The state of Michigan passed legislation encouraging auto-insurance companies to grant seniors (50 years and older) a discount on their auto insurance payment for successfully completing a qualified course in driver safety. People who take this course meet this requirement. Consult your insurance agent. For more information or to sign up for the course, call the Mecosta County Senior Center at (231) 972-2884. There is a $12 fee for AARP members and $14 fee for non-members. The fee helps to pay for materials. Calling also provides organizers preparation time for those attending.

Worry is something most of us have experienced at least a few times in our lives. I can recall as a child worrying when my parents were away from home. I remember making a bright vivid movie in my mind of Mom and Dad in a car accident, lying in a ditch somewhere or in the hospital, half dead. Even as an adult, I sometimes feel myself going down that road. But instead of anxiety, I have learned to create a better calm empowering situation. It is important to know that we can learn this. There are internal and external triggers for worry. The outside things are often beyond our control, although sometimes it is a situation we have created ourselves. Sometimes we are innocently ignorant, or lazy, or defiant, or forgetful and we neglect things. For example, if we do not pay our taxes, we will have something to worry about. We created the situation and now some one else is going to take care of it. This creates much worry. Sometimes it is internal things that worry us. For example an illness can make us worry a lot. The solution to worry is on two fronts: If there is something you can do, do it now. If you have not paid a bill, call the creditor and work it out. Stop putting it off, fix it now. If there is nothing you can do outwardly, then you have to learn to make internal changes. Anxiety and emotions from worry are from chemical changes in our body. Learning to relax and meditate helps a lot. Writing down the end solution, not thinking about how it will get done; just writing down the final outcome will set your creative mind to work to bring about a solution. This will also allow you to have some peace of mind because you are thinking about it being over, not about being stuck in the problem. Remember to pray the solution, not the problem. Fix it, change it, let the problem go, and focus on the best outcome. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Announcing the Grand Opening of the Big Rapids location of Vern’s Wooden Nickel!
We have been serving the Sand Lake area for almost 30 years, and three generations! Now, due to the size of our family and the abundance of product, we have decided to open a 2nd location. We think this is a good idea. We hope you do too! So, if you like to save money and shop locally, you can do both in two great cities!
1950 – Marshall Bill Hawkins of Morley, a former cowboy and rodeo contestant from Texas, is beginning a new part-time career as a rodeo judge after deciding that the actual ropin’ and ridin’ belong to the younger generations. Carl Mero is the new Rural Route 2 Post Carrier for Lakeview replacing William Raglin who recently passed away and is still greatly missed. 1960 – Lakeview’s Little Pee-Wee baseball team continued their victory streak by winning three ball games in the past two weeks. Army Pvt. William Ogg of Morley recently qualified as expert in firing the carbine rifle. He is currently serving with the 3rd Ordinance Company on Fort Campbell, KY.

1975 – Marine Lance Corporal David Schuttle of Lakeview has completed a training deployment at the Marine Corps Air Station, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where he was taught survival techniques. Trufant has received a $100,000.00 project grant to expand the local telephone office, now serving more than 1,100 customers. 1995 – Whether it was straight line winds or really a tornado is of little matter to the folks of Amble as Saturday’s afternoon storm did enough damage to be either. An old time block party was held recently at Townline Lake with enough food to fill several Thanksgiving tables along with plenty of toe-tapping music.

Our pet of the week this time around is not one but two adorable kittens, both of them desperate for a new owner to come and adopt them! They’re j just a couple of the many cats and dogs available at the Montcalm County Animal Shelter in Stanton. These two kitties are named Fred and Ginger - both weigh about three pounds and w are around twelve weeks old. Fred’s coat is buff and white, while Ginger has black and white fur. It’s hard to tell who’s cuter, but either one would definitely make a great addition to your home! Their shelter ID #’s are 10/06/105 & 107.
Many other cats besides Fred and Ginger are available to be adopted, and plenty of dogs too. Go online to for a full list of adoptable animals. There is a $40 adoption fee for dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a refundable spay/neuter deposit ($50 for dogs, $25 for cats) unless the animal is “fixed” already. New animals are brought into the shelter on a daily basis, so if the one you want is gone by the time you call, the Montcalm County Animal Shelter will do its best to find you a dog or cat that matches what you’re looking for. The Montcalm County Animal Shelter is open to the public Mon-Fri 12:30pm to 5pm, except Weds 12:30pm to 7pm. Call (989) 831-7355 or (616) 225-7355 for more information.
