1 DESCRIPTION AND CROSS SECTION

1.1 Description
The capacitor voltage transformer type CCV is a single-phase instrument transformer
composed of a capacitor divider and an electromagnetic unit (EMU).

The capacitor divider consists of 4 capacitors units (max). Each capacitor unit is composed of an
assembly of capacitor elements connected in series.

A capacitor element consists of two electrodes (aluminium foil), separated by a mixed dielectric
(film paper film). The elements are impregnated with synthetic liquid.
From the electrical point of view, the capacitor divider is composed of a high voltage capacitor
C1 and an intermediate voltage capacitor C2.
C2 is located in the bottom of the bottom unit when the CVT is having more than one module
The electromagnetic unit, connected between the intermediate voltage terminal and the earth
terminal of the capacitor divider, comprises essentially:
- a medium voltage transformer
- a compensating inductance
- a damping device
The EMU is immersed in insulating oil and enclosed in an airtight metallic tank.

The bottom capacitor unit is installed on the cover of the tank and is connected to the EMU
through a tight bushing.
The other units are assembled on the bottom capacitor unit and connected in series.
The adjustments of the transformer and the inductance with the capacitor divider are carried
out in factory to answer the required specifications and do not have to be modified.
The tank should not be open without particular precautions and the taking away of oil is
forbidden without the agreement of ALSTOM.

3 CONTROL & UNPACKING

3.1 Before UNPACKING

The crates will be examined to evaluate the possible damages which could be due to knocks,
shocks or a fall during transport.
It is required to check the good external aspect of the crates.

Note: Traces of oil on the crates may be due to rough handling or due to leakage. They should
be reported.
If one of the apparatus shows a bad state, it is possible that the good have been partially or
totally damaged. In case, please contact the supplier in order to define all future disposals to be
taken.

3.2 After UNPACKING

The porcelain insulators will be examined to evaluate the importance of the damage and a
report will be made whether:
- Porcelain petticoats are damaged.
- Main porcelain insulator body is cracked.
- The H.V. head, the fixing flanges, the cover of the tank and the low voltage terminal
box are stained with oil.

NOTE: A trace of oil might be due to improper cleaning of the capacitor voltage transformers
before dispatching. They should be cleaned with grease remover and, when dry, the suspected
parts dusted with talcum powder for easy visual checking. Any oil leak darkens the talcum
powder

Any trace of oil on the H.V. head is probably due to a damaged expansion bellows.

In the event of damage on the insulator, the column should be protected against moisture with
adhesive tape after thorough cleaning with grease remover, or protected with a polyethylene
plastic bag until further repair instructions are received.

- Should the expansion bellows be damaged, report to ALSTOM for further instructions.
- Should H.V or L.V terminals be damaged, report to ALSTOM for further instructions.

6 CHECKING

6.1 Electrical CHECKS

i. We recommend rough ratio measurement only for the CVTs.

The secondary voltage is calculated by using the formula :
Sec. Voltage = (Applied Voltage * X2/ 3) / (X1 /3)kV,
Where X1 = Primary rated voltage, X2 = Secondary Rated Voltage

ii. It is not recommended to carry out Capacitance and tan delta measurement at site.

iii. A mega-ohmmeter or any other measuring instrument having a service voltage equal to
or lower than 2 kV should be used to check the insulation resistance values.
- Check that the connection diagram is the correct one and that it corresponds to the
characteristics shown on the name plate.
- The insulation resistance value measured between primary and secondary windings should
be greater than 100 M.
- After disconnecting the earthed terminals, the insulation resistance between low voltage
windings should be greater than 25 M with 500V megger.
- The insulation resistance between L.V. windings and earth should be greater than 25 M
with 500V megger.

NOTE: AFTER TESTING, THE CONNECTIONS TO EARTH MUST BE RECONNECTED.

6.2 Physical CHECKS

- Check that the H.F. terminal is earthed by a copper strap on the terminal board or if,
'Carrier Frequency Current' injection duties are called for, it is earthed via H.F. carrier
injection equipment.
- Check that the primary neutral N is earthed on the terminal board.
- Check that the C.V.T. tank is earthed.
- Check correct rating and function of links and fuses .Check continuity to earth.
- Check the capacitor serial numbers written down on the nameplates. The bottom, the
middle and the top units must have the same serial number.
- Check all connections are made firmly and are in good condition.
- Check all interconnecting bolts between units are securely tightened.
- Check the level of the oil in the tank. If the indicator is unduly low disconnect the
transformer from the supply circuit and notify ALSTOM.

7 MAINTENANCE
A visual inspection during the first weeks of service is requested, followed by inspection
once in 6 months later and then at least every 2 years in light to medium polluted areas,
annually in heavily polluted areas, and every six months in very heavily polluted areas. Excessive
build up of pollution material on the equipment can accelerate corrosion. The finish will give
protection provided the conditions listed below are adhered to.

7.1 Inspection

De-energise and check especially:

- Appearance of the insulator, clean it if the pollution build up is high. The equipment can be
washed down with a mild detergent and warm water and then rinsed with clean water.
- The appearance of the metallic components parts are designed to be low corrosion and do
not require painting. Stainless steel nuts and bolts will become discoloured gradually over
time which should not be taken as corrosion.
- Weather proofing and proper ventilation of the terminal box, clean inside if necessary.
- The tightening of primary and secondary terminals and earthing connection.
- Inspect for signs of oil leakage.
- Check for the physical appearance of the terminal blocks and the voltage limiting device
after opening the terminal box cover, once in 6 months/ whenever the shut down is taken.
MAXIMUM OIL LEVEL

MINIMUM OIL LEVEL

- Check the position of the oil level on the tank. If the indicator is unduly low, disconnect the
transformer from the supply circuit and notify ALSTOM.

7.2 Connections
All electrical connections should be checked periodically and tightened within 1 month of
charging.
Keep all terminals and other parts, clean and free from corrosion. If it is necessary to remake
connections this should be done in accordance with the recommendation in the Section
Handling and mounting.

7.3 Column impregnant.

The insulating liquid used in capacitive columns is based on synthetic aromatic hydrocarbons
(type M/DBT according to IEC 867). This kind of impregnant guarantees very high dielectric
performances but is very sensitive to atmospheric moisture. Consequently, in order to keep the
volume of the liquid adjusted to the temperature, capacitor voltage transformers are equipped
with a stainless steel bellows. This minimizes exchanges between the impregnant and the
ambient atmosphere.

IT IS FORBIDDEN TO DRAW SAMPLES FROM THE CAPACITOR UNIT.

Instruction Manual For CVT & CC Creation date: 22/02/2012 Rev: 00
N CVT IM - 01 Page 15 / 18 Drawn / Checked: MN /VSN
Following the principle of its functioning, the cell exerts a slight pressure on the column. The
pressure depends on the quantity of liquid exchanged between the column part and the cell
part. Thus, a continuous balance is maintained among the three factors: temperature, volume
and pressure.
