Title of the Lesson: Scientific Revolution VIP Research Project and Presentation

Summary: Students will research and create a presentation for a Very Important
Person (VIP) of the Scientific Revolution
Grade Level: 7
Time Frame: One Week
Subject: World History - Scientific Revolution
Objectives: Students will:
Choose an important scientist from the Scientific Revolution to
research and present to their table group. (Kepler, Copernicus, Newton,
Descartes, Bacon, and Galileo)
Use their history textbooks and additional resources (textbook and
website links provided) to research and create a presentation for their chosen
VIP of the Scientific Revolution
Research background information (birth place, early life, where they
were educated, and what they were famous for?)
Explain their VIPs contributions to science
Explain two quotes from their VIP in their own words
Watch three educational videos about their VIP and write a brief review
of what they watched
Create a presentation from their research and present it to their table
group
Standards:
7.10 Students analyze the historical developments of the Scientific Revolution and
its lasting effect on religious, political, and cultural institutions.
Essential Question: How did the Scientific Revolution change the way people
understood the world?

Materials: Holt Textbook, History Alive! Textbook, Chromebook, Internet Resources


Sequence of Activities:
1. Monday:
a. Students will preview the sections in the the textbooks
and view the online resources to figure out which scientist they are
interested in (10 min)
b. Each person at each group will decide what scientist they
are researching (There are 6 students per group and 6 different
scientists, therefore no student will research the same scientist within a
group) (5 min)
c. I will model to the whole class how to how to cite a source
in MLA format using the Easy-Bib Add on on Google Docs (10 min)
d. Students will research and fill out the table for
Background Information on their research organizer (15 min)
e. Students will begin researching their scientists
Contributions to Science in their research organizer (10 min)
2. Tuesday:
a. Students will continue their research on their scientist.
They will continue researching their scientists Contributions to
Science in their research organizer (10 min)
b. Students will research their scientists achievements
Effect on the World in their own words (15 min)
c. Students will find two quotes by their scientist and explain
the meaning in their own words. (15 min)
d. Students will watch three youtube videos on their scientist
and write a 5-7 sentence review of the best video they watched,
following the review questions listed in the research organizer. (10
minutes)
3. Wednesday:
a. Students will finish their video review on their research
organizer. (15 min)
b. Students will sit in a group with other students who did
research on the same scientist to compare research and ask clarifying
questions. They will also begin creating their presentations. (20 min)
4. Thurs & Fri:
a. Students will finalize their presentations (15 min on
Thursday)
b. Students will take turns presenting their scientist to their
table groups in 8-10 minute presentations. Students who are listening
to the presentations must take notes in their spiral notebooks. (35
minutes Thursday and 50 minutes Friday)

Accommodations, Adaptations, and Differentiated Instruction:
Optional use of sentence frames for students to help them through their
research
Comparing research and clarifying questions with the group of students
working on the same VIP before creating presentation
Use a timer to keep students on track
Challenge Activity: Students may add an extra quote to analyze in their
own words and watch an extra video to review.
