1. DESCRIPTION
Symptom/Condition
On some SANTA FE (DM) and TUCSON (LM), 4WD may not operate normally with an abnormal noise
while driving. This symptom encounters due to wear-out of the spline gear of the differential and
transfer oil seal.

Inspect the vehicle and then repair the vehicle referring to the service procedure

1. Remove the auto transmission assembly referring
to the applicable workshop manual.

2. Remove the torque converter (A).

NOTE
Store the torque converter so that the ring gear
(B) faces up to prevent ATF leakage as shown on
the right image.

3. Remove the 22 bolts from the auto trans mission


and then remove the converter housing (C).

Tightening torque
: 27.5 ~ 34.3 Nm (2.8 ~ 3.5kgf.m, 20.3 ~ 25.3 lb-ft)

4. Insert a pry bar to the red rectangle area on the
right picture and separate the converter housing from
the auto transmission case.

5. Remove the differential assembly (D) by lifting it
up.

6. Loosen the 12 drive gear bolts and then remove


the drive gear (E).

Tightening torque
: 127.5 ~ 137.3 Nm (13.0 ~ 14.0 kgf.m, 94.0 ~ 101.3
lb-ft)

7. Install the new differential (F) to the removed drive


gear (E).

NOTE
Use new bolt when installing the new differential
(F).

8. Remove the differential oil seal (G) from the


converter housing.

NOTE
Remove the spacer and outer race from the
convertor housing and using SSTs and then
check below ;

- If the outer race is damaged, replace the outer


race with a new one.
- If the wearness of the spacer found, replace the
spacer with a new one.

9. Remove the differential oil seal (H) from the auto


transmission case.

10. Remove all the residues (I) and ATF oil on the
converter housing and the auto transmission case
matching surface.

NOTE
Remove the spacer and outer race from the
transmission case using SST and then check
below ;

- If the outer race is damaged, replace the outer


race with a new one.
- If the wearness of the spacer found, replace the
spacer with a new one.

11. Replace the oil pump O-ring (J) with a new one.

NOTE
Apply ATF oil to the O-ring installing position (K).

12. Replaca 5 pipe seals with new ones.

NOTE
Apply ATF oil to the installing position before
seal installation.

13. Install the differential assembly (M) to the auto


transmission case.

14. Apply liquid gasket (N) to the converter housing.

Liquid Gasket
Use LOCTITE FMD- 546 or THREE-BOND TB
1281B or equivalent.

15. Apply ATF oil to the area (O) of the converter


housing to prevent the damage of the oil pump O-
ring.

16. Install the converter housing to the auto


transmission case and then press the coverter
housing evenly using a rubber hammer.

17. Install 7 converter housing mounting bolts.

Tightening torque
: 27.5 ~ 34.3 Nm (2.8 ~ 3.5kgf.m, 20.3 ~ 25.3 lb-ft)

18. Install 15 auto transmission case mounting bolts.

Tightening torque
: 27.5 ~ 34.3 Nm (2.8 ~ 3.5kgf.m, 20.3 ~ 25.3 lb-ft)

19. Inset the differential oil seal-RH (R) to the
converter housing using SST (P) and (Q).

NOTE
1) Apply ATF oil to the differential oil seal-RH (R)
before inserting the oil seal.

20. Insert the differential oil seal-LH (S) to the auto S


transmission case.

NOTE
1) Apply ATF oil to the differential oil seal-LH (S)
before inserting the oil seal.

21. Install the torque converter.

22. Apply grease of Molybdenum type onto


differential inner shaft spline.

23. Reinstall the auto transmission in reverse order
of removal.

NOTE
1) Transfer dust cover (T) and oil seal (U) should
be replaced with a new one referring to the
applicable workshop manual.

CAUTION)
1) Apply lithium type grease between seal lips.
2) Use SSTs when installing the oil seal referring
to the below pictures.

2) Clean the transfer spline and apply grease of


molybdenum type onto differential inner shaft
spline (V).

24. Install all the removed parts by reversing order of


removal. Replenish ATF and check ATF for level with
the vehicle on level ground.
