ACT I SCENE 1 HONEYMOON. VACATION SPOT. PRESENT DAY. The sound of an instrument being tuned begins before the curtains open. Curtains open on empty stage with a the bard sitting atop a platform tuning his bouzouki. There is a large blank screen in the background. BARD Oh! Hello. 'Be with you in just a moment. (Finishes tuning, stands) Allow me to introduce myself. I am Dirwyn Scop the bard, the spirit of lore, a teller of tales, a weaver of blankets of song and fable to keep you warm on frosty midwinter nights, blah, blah, blah, you get the idea. The story tonight is about two young lovers with love in their hearts and forever on their minds. Anna Savannah Hope, young, beautiful, but oh so easily bored, and Evan, noble young man who fears his own shadow and worries that he worries too much. Both bound by the chains of loneliness but are about to meet and fall in love. But love, enigmatic creature that it is, sometimes leads those of us with even the best intentions and the truest hearts on the strangest adventures... "CHAINS" Evan and Anna Savannah Hope enter dancing to the song. Acting out the meeting, courtship, and marriage. BARD SINGS CHAINS A LONELY YOUNG DREAMER HER THOUGHTS IN THE SHADOWS WAITING FOR LOVE TO BLOW IN THROUGH HER WINDOWS WAITING FOR THE SONG SILENCE ONLY ANSWERS HER CALL A JACK OF ALL TRADES A WANDERER OF PAGES NOT SEEKING, NOT FINDING THROUGH UNCOUNTED AGES
NEEDING JUST A SONG NOT KNOWING HE NEEDED AT ALL WHAT WOULD SHE DO IF HE CALLED DOWN A STAR LAID IT RIGHT DOWN AT HER FEET BOASTED OF TREASURE AND PROMISED HER GOLD BUT GAVE HER NOTHING, GAVE HER NOTHING BUT LOVE ANNA WHEN WILL I BELONG? EVAN WAITING ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN ANNA WHEN WILL THIS PAIN END? EVAN STANDING ALONE IN RAIN ANNA WHEN WILL THE SUN RISE? EVAN AND FEEL THE WARMTH IN MY HEART ANNA WHEN WILL THE WINDS CHANGE? EVAN AND TOUCH SOMEONE TO RELEASE ME ANNA WHEN WILL I BE FREE? EVAN SET ME FREE, SET ME FREE, SET ME FREE ANNA FROM THESE CHAINS NARRATOR WAITING BY THE SHORE WAITING BY THE TELEPHONE WAITING FOR THE POSTMAN TO BRING HIM A METAPHOR DRESSED BEFORE COFFEE PEEKING THROUGH CURTAINS DRAWN HE WAITS FOR HER FOR THEM TO SAIL AWAY WITH THE DAWN PLAYING TO THE SONG LAYING IN THE SAND
KNOWING ALL ALONG MUSIC IS THE TOUCH OF A HAND TRANSITION TO TREE OF PROMISES: SCENE 2 THE TREE OF PROMISES Evan and Anna Savannah Hope come out to stand before the tree of promises, an ancient oak tree on a cliff side by the hotel in which they are spending their honeymoon. ANNA (Looking at the tree) Here it is, Evan. This is the tree my father used to help me climb when we came here on vacation. EVAN (Looking the tree up and down) It's a magnificent tree, Anna, looking up that high makes me a little dizzy. How old would you say it is? ANNA I was told it is at least a hundred years old. EVAN Well, it's beautiful. It's amazing it survived all these years overlooking the sea on this cliff. (looks over cliff) Wow! That's high, don't stand too close, there. Wait, I have an idea. (Digging in his pocket) I should carve our initials into it! ANNA NO! Are you crazy? You can't just cut into a beautiful old tree like that? EVAN It was just an idea. You’re right, I could get caught. ANNA Don’t be such a scaredy cat. You’re always so worried you’re going to get into trouble. I know, give me your pendant. (Taking off his pendant and her pendant off also) There's a hole in the tree up there.
(Starting to climb) I used to imagine finding treasure in it when I was little. EVAN Wait! Are you sure you want to do that? You might get hurt! What if you fall? ANNA Then you'll catch me. EVAN Well...ok, but be careful! ANNA (putting the chains in the tree) There. Now no matter what, our pendants will be together and so will we. EVAN What if someone cuts the tree down? ANNA You worry too much, Evan. EVAN But, what are the chances those necklaces will be safe up there? Someone might steal them. ANNA What were the chances we would find each other? We did, and if someone else DOES find them, they might also find their own true love like we did. That would be perfect. Our lives are perfect and perfection is forever. Before the song begins, on the blank screen appears a heart pendant. "OUR LOVE IS FOREVER" EVAN THERE IS NO ONE ELSE FOR ME BUT YOU ANNA THERE IS NO ONE WHO CAN TAKE YOUR PLACE EVAN THERE IS SO MUCH MORE FOR US TO DO ANNA I'M COMPLETE WHEN I LOOK AT YOUR FACE CHORUS (TOGETHER)
OUR LOVE IS FOREVER OUR LOVE MAKES US WHOLE OUR LOVE IS FOREVER
Anna knocks Evan off the cliff in the middle of Evan singing "forever". She screams his name. The big screen goes black. Lights down. Lights up on the Bard. BARD Bad things happen to good people sometimes, that is to be sure. Sometimes it's a good thing that the living don't know what happens after we cross over. Evan has no idea that the end is sometimes just the beginning, you can bet on it. IN THE FOREST OF UNFINISHED LOVE Evan awakes on his back among trees and men looking at him. Where am I? EVAN
MAN 1 (Helping Evan up) I hate to tell you my good man, but you're dead. EVAN (Standing) What? What do you mean? MAN 1 There's not much more to it than that. MAN 2 Give him a minute, he'll get it. EVAN I'm...dead? Oh man, I've never been West of Indianapolis before, this is terrible! MAN 2 (in the background) Told you he'd get it. MAN 1 What do you remember last?
EVAN I was on the cliff with my new bride, on my honeymoon. ALL (make a shared empathy pained expression) Ooooooohhhhh EVAN So is this...heaven? MAN 1 Nope. EVAN (gasping) What? You mean...this is... MAN 1 (raising eyebrows) Oh no! No, no, no. This isn't the other place! Goodness no. This is the forest of unfinished love. Your soul is tied to this tree until you've completed what you need to complete. Here your soul can be hurt and even "killed" (Making quote signs in the air) Sending you completely over the edge to the "full" (quote signs again) Afterlife without ever getting the chance to finish whatever it was you didn't finish. MAN 2 You see, this is a kind of in-between place, where men go when they have unfinished business on Earth. Just men? EVAN
MAN 2 No, women get to come here too, just not as trees. EVAN What do women come here as? (Gets hit with a rock) Ow! ALL (in unison)
EVAN That seems a little harsh.
MAN 1 Why do you say that? Women ARE the Earth, the foundation of all life in the whole world. Without women, there would be no human life in the world at all. MAN 2 Every developing baby starts out female anyway, men are just mutations of the female form. MAN 1 (pointing at man 2) He was a doctor. EVAN Well, that's a beautiful sentiment. I would never have thought of it that way. You guys are deep. MAN 1 Actually, we just want to stop getting hit by rocks. EVAN So what do I need to finish? MAN 1 Well, that's what we don't know isn't it? MAN 2 Yeah, take Bill over there. (Pointing at one of the men) EVAN What about him? MAN 2 Hey Bill come over here and tell our newcomer your story. (whispering to Evan) It's my favorite. BILL I think I need to kill a vampire. EVAN What? BILL Yeah, I was killed by a vampire, but I was in love at the time, so here I am. My body is off roaming around, sucking peoples' necks (Grimacing)
Complete strangers necks! While I am stuck here. That's so gross. EVAN How did you get had by a vampire? ARCHERY Scene plays out with Bill and girl dance out the song and ends with her biting him. ARCHERY AS I WALKED THROUGH A WANING SUMMER DAY I FOUND A MAIDEN DRESSED IN SUMMER FARE SHE STROKED THE GRAY CLOUDS PASSING OVERHEAD AND WORE THE DAY'S BURNT ASHES IN HER HAIR SHE SAID "WOULD YOU CARE TO HAVE A GAME OF PLAYFUL ARCHERY?" SHE TORE THE LEAVES LOOSE FROM THE MAPLE TREES WITH THE FORLORN SADNESS IN HER EYES I WATCHED THE MOON REFLECTING IN HER TEARS AND FELL THE STARS DOWN FROM THE FALLING SKIES SHE SAID "WOULD YOU CARE TO HAVE A GAME OF PLAYFUL ARCHERY?" AND THORNS CARESSED HER SMOOTH AND PERFECT SKIN AS SHE WALKED THROUGH MY SOBRIETY SHE SPOKE IN RIDDLES OF THE EVENING WINDS WITH UNDERTONES OF HIGH ANXIETY SHE SAID "WOULD YOU CARE TO HAVE A GAME OF PLAYFUL ARCHERY?" I STOOD THERE HELPLESS AS A YEARLING FAWN SHE DIDN'T NOTICE MY PERPLEXITY MY HESITATION COST ME EVERYTHING AS I AFFRONTED HER PROPRIETY SHE SAID "WOULD YOU CARE TO HAVE A GAME OF PLAYFUL ARCHERY?" SHE CAME TO ME IN ROBES OF SILKEN MIST HER MUSCLES TIGHT AS STRING UPON THE BOW WRAPPED UP TIGHTLY IN HER AGONY HER STARE SHOT THROUGH ME JUST LIKE AN ARROW SHE SAID "WOULD YOU CARE TO HAVE A GAME OF PLAYFUL ARCHERY?" BILL And then she bit me, so one day, maybe, I'll get even and put my body to rest. EVAN
So, do all of you have a story like that. MAN 3 I was hanging a picture... MAN 1 Oh, don't start with the picture story again, please! Sorry. MAN 3 A shadow falls over the stage. The men begin looking for cover as a menacing growling or howling echoes in from the distance. EVAN What was that? MAN 1 (moving toward his tree) You've got to get into your tree, man, the collector's coming! EVAN (Looking away from the men) Collector? What collector? MAN 2 (also moving toward his tree) The soul collector, man, don't you know anything? EVAN I'm sorry, I just got here! How do I? (looking around.) All the men have disappeared. EVAN (cont'd) Hey! Where'd everybody go? How do I get in my tree? I'm new at this! Ahhhhh! (looks at the tree and notices that there is an oval vignette carved into it with the name "Anna" glowing in the middle. He panics and runs away) MAN 1 (coming out from behind his tree, the name has ceased to glow.) Uh, guys? I think we scared him. MAN 2
(laughing) Ya think? MAN 1 Hey buddy! Come on back, we were just fooling with you! Buddy! MAN 3 Dude, he's gone. BILL Now you've done it. MAN 1 (looking worried) He'll be back. MAN 2 Should we go after him? MAN 1 Are you kidding? The REAL soul collector might be out there somewhere. I'm not going anywhere! END SCENE 1 SCENE 2 Evan walks through the forest and a daze holding a picture of Anna in is mind (which appears as a vignette on the big screen.) EVAN Hello! Guys! I think I'm lost! Anyone? Why me? Why does this have to happen to me? I don't like the woods, I don't like the wilderness. I like safe. I like home. This is neither! DARKNESS (an elegantly evil, well-dressed and well-spoken man smiles and steps out from behind a tree) Lost are we? EVAN (startled)
DARKNESS What are you looking for, my boy? EVAN
The trees of unfinished love. DARKNESS Ah, yes, those. Do we have something undone on the other side? EVAN Well, I don't know if WE have anything undone, but I know there are a few things I'd like to finish. DARKNESS Leave a girl behind did you? EVAN Maybe, I didn't catch your name. DARKNESS I'm Ness, Dark Ness. EVAN You're kidding. DARKNESS Would I lie to you? My brothers are Cruel, Evil, and Biz. I have a sister, Cozy, but we don't talk about her, she's not quite right... EVAN Ok, then, well, I have to go... DARKNESS So soon? I've been waiting for you for quite some time, why leave now? EVAN You've been waiting? SONG "BELIEVE" BEGINS VERSE 1 DARKNESS CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW LONG IT'S TAKEN FOR ME TO GET TO YOU? A MILLION YEARS FLY BY WITH A BLINK OF MY EYE AND WHAT I SAY IS TRUE. I'M STILL IMPATIENT AS HELL LONG AFTER I FELL I UTTERLY BELIEVE I DESERVE ONE MORE SOUL FROM THIS HUMAN ZOO ONE MORE SOUL EVAN NOW I BELIEVE THAT YOU'RE HERE FOR ME
BUT I ALSO BELIEVE THAT YOU'RE NOT REAL I'VE CROSSED OVER, BUT I'M STILL FREE AND I DON'T CARE HOW YOU FEEL I BELIEVE A SOUL MUST BE GIVEN YOU CAN'T TAKE IT BY FORCE, YOU CAN'T STEAL DARKNESS I BELIEVE BELIEF HAS POWER EVAN YOU HAVE NONE OVER ME DARKNESS FREE WILL IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL THING EVAN AND YOU'LL NEVER HAVE IT WILLINGLY VERSE 2 (TOGETHER) DARKNESS CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW LONG IT'S TAKEN FOR ME TO BELIEVE IN YOU? A MILLION YEARS FLY BY WITH A BLINK OF MY EYE AND WHAT I SAY IS TRUE. I CAN'T GO HOME AND LEAVE YOU OUT HERE JUST TO ROAM NOW COME BACK WITH ME IT'S OVERRATED TO BE FREE TO BE FREE EVAN NOW I BELIEVE THAT YOU'RE HERE FOR ME BUT I ALSO BELIEVE THAT YOU'RE NOT REAL I'VE CROSSED OVER, BUT I'M STILL FREE AND I DON'T CARE HOW YOU FEEL I BELIEVE A SOUL MUST BE GIVEN YOU CAN'T TAKE IT BY FORCE, YOU CAN'T STEAL DARKNESS I BELIEVE BELIEF HAS POWER EVAN AND I GIVE NONE TO YOU DARKNESS FREE WILL IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL THING EVAN THIS CHAT IS OVER, I'M THROUGH (Evan turns with a brave face then runs off stage in terror)
DARKNESS (Picking up the picture of Anna) Who says I'm after you? (vanishes, lights down) END SCENE 2 SCENE 3 Evan still wanders through the woods looking for the starting place, his tree. He hears a commotion and goes to investigate. The battle moves toward him. (singing while fighting)
I AM DEATH I AM WAR COME KNOCKING AT MY DOOR I'LL HAVE YOU DYING TO FIGHT TO FIGHT TO KILL BECAUSE DYING AND FIGHTING IS WHAT YOU'RE DYING TO FIGHT FOR I'M A BLOODY PREDILECTION THE HOPELESS ADDICTION IN TRUTH AND FICTION I'LL MAKE YOU STEP UP FOR MORE I AM THE KILLING WRATH THE UNFOCUSED RAGE IN EVERY HISTORY BOOK ON EVERY BLOOD-SPATTERED PAGE I AM THE FALLING AXE I AM THE SMOKING GUN I AM ALL FOUR HORSEMEN GROUND INTO ONE
I AM THE RAGING HEART POUNDING AT YOUR DOOR I AM THE GOD OF WAR (turns to look at Evan snarling) And I suppose you want some too! EVAN (startled, drops to his knees) AHHH! No! I'm, I'm just in need of directions! GOD OF WAR (completely changing his demeanor to civilized Englishman) Ah! Right! What are you looking for?
EVAN (a bit surprised, still horrified) Um, well, I'm lost and am trying to find my way back to the forest of unfinished love. GOD OF WAR Right! Well, you go that way, until you get to the stream of enfettered schizms at the tracks of the soul railway, then turn left. You can't miss it. EVAN Ah, great, thank you! (turns to leave) GOD OF WAR (shouting again) And where do you think you're going? EVAN Uh, I was just... GOD OF WAR You think you can just up and go without so much as a "by your leave"? EVAN Sorry! I was just... GOD OF WAR When I give directions, a price must be paid! EVAN Ahhh! Of course! What do you want? GOD OF WAR (back to English gentleman) Tea? EVAN Uh... GOD OF WAR I was about to have tea when those ruffians challenged me. Join me? EVAN Uh...sure. GOD OF WAR Oh smashing! I hate to tea alone. Oh, and what's more. EVAN
What's that? GOD OF WAR (screaming, draws sword)
(goes running into the kitchen (backstage) flailing his sword, the sounds of hacking, slashing, and screaming can be heard. He comes back out with two plates of perfect chef salads) There we go. I hope you like chef. EVAN Uh...sure. They sit down to eat and have tea. Lights down, come back up with two half-empty plates and the two conversing. EVAN (cont'd) So, you're the god of war eh? Excellent salad, by the way, thank you. GOD OF WAR Yes. Oh, you’re quite welcome, I am passionate about my salads. EVAN Forgive me for saying so, but you seem awfully polite and, well... Civilized? GOD OF WAR (chuckles) EVAN Well, yes! GOD OF WAR Well of course I am. Have you seen the state of affairs in today's warfare? Modern war is very civilized. It's all internet now. I love a good virus, and nothing, I mean nothing, will shut a country down faster than a good rampant server virus. Or better yet, a boot sector Trojan, with stealth! Ooohhh. EVAN Wow. That's amazing. GOD OF WAR
What has two thumbs and inspired the "I love you" virus? EVAN I don't know, what? GOD OF WAR (pointing to himself with both thumbs wagging) EVAN (eyebrows raised) Wow. Again. GOD OF WAR You should have seen my predecessors, throwing rocks and howling like apes, or storming around in bronze armor carrying, get this, iron, yes iron, swords. EVAN But you have armor... GOD OF WAR I'll have you know that this armor is constructed entirely out of titanium/carbon ceramic polymer nano-wire and this sword can only be forged in zero gravity. The old gods' weapons can't hold a candle to this material. It even makes excellent non-stick cookware. EVAN Yet another…wow. That's amazing. GOD OF WAR I should say so. So why are you looking for the trees of unfinished love anyway? EVAN Because I was attached to one of the trees. GOD OF WAR Ah! So you have some unfinished business with your love, then, eh? EVAN Something like that, but I don't know what it is. I was just married and I fell of a cliff on my honeymoon. GOD OF WAR (Applauding)
That's brilliant! And you don't know what you have left to do? EVAN Well, I assume that she's going to move on and I have no say over things now. GOD OF WAR Never assume, lad... EVAN Yeah I know, "it will make an ass of you and me". GOD OF WAR You don't know what you need to do my lad, just like I didn't when I first got here. EVAN When YOU first got here? You mean you weren't always here? GOD OF WAR Of course not! Most of us spirits were human once. We get here by merit and exceptional talent. EVAN So you were a killer? GOD OF WAR No, actually, my talent was for strategy and extreme skill in a sport that required nerves of steel, split second timing, extreme physical control, and a keen eye for tactics. EVAN Wow, what was it? Soccer? Kendo? Wrestling? Chess?... GOD OF WAR Shuffleboard. EVAN Um. GOD OF WAR Don't tell me you can't see the extreme military prowess needed to master the art of shuffleboard. EVAN Well, I never really thought... GOD OF WAR
Of course you didn't, that's why you're not a god, they COULD see it and that's why I'm here, now finish your crouton. EVAN I can't stay long though, I have to get back before something bad happens. I’m very scared of everything. My own shadow, all the time, but I have this feeling, I don't know if it's something trying to tell me something, or just the fact that I have something unfinished to learn about, but I feel compelled... GOD OF WAR Fear not longer! I'll have you before the stream before you know it, and then you can go and find out why you're here and take care of that nasty fear thing you’ve got. EVAN You're going with me? GOD OF WAR Of course, lad, I'll go with you! Glad you asked! I love a good seek and destroy! There is no greater validation of war than to fight for a just cause! EVAN Um, right. GOD OF WAR Finish up! We must be off! (Roars) The two finish up with their meals and the lights go down on them while coming up on a man talking to a small group of people. POETRY (reciting) I am simultaneous, TV reporters stare in mute surprise at my ubiquitous lack of presence as I sit at their feet and count tiny boulders embedded in the sidewalk at the corner of Yin and Yang I am simultaneous I spontaneously age as people ask me for directions to their cars in the parking lot while sober drivers drink to my health that may not be the safer bet of the
two I like you a lot I might even love you but words are unconditional and you mean to say that what you mean is not what I ask I am both here and though you think you see me I walk between this world and sit on both sides of the chair that forces me into the paper I am simultaneous shadows cast off knowing glances shade the burn caused by scathing remarks from old ideas and burners left on by a busy mind I found my mortality in a drawer it was next to my imperfect heart that teasingly reminded me that it was going to kill me one day while I wasn't looking I am simultaneous I'm a spark that crosses the boundary between life and main street that will go out like seven billion others that light the sphere just long enough to see the innocence in Norman's drug store That sliver in my eye you know the one stuck in your minds when you tried to see the origin of the idea of how to find the sliver I am simultaneous I have the notion in my pocket that I invented you as a fully autonomous slave of your own will fully independent of my desire If you wish to be you need only ask yourself one question when you are face to face look in the mirror close your eyes the truth is there. Crowd snaps fingers in appreciation. Spirit of Poetry nods knowingly. GOD OF WAR Well, that was odd. In an incredibly boring kind of way. POETRY
Excuse me? GOD OF WAR You heard me. That was a boring load of crap. POETRY I'll have you know that I am the Spirit of Poetry. What I say spreads on the winds to find the ears of those in need of inspiration. I spread the joy of words and imagery. GOD OF WAR Like a virus. POETRY Why do you seek to hurt me so? What kind of soul would... GOD OF WAR I, am the god of war! POETRY Oh. Well, that makes sense. Do you wish to do battle with me now? GOD OF WAR I don't waste time on pitiful, sensitive little things like yourself. POETRY Unless of course it was a war of words, in which you are sorely under-prepared and exceedingly overmatched. GOD OF WAR (Outraged) Over? Over matched? Me? Ahhhhhh! (Drawing his sword) POETRY Now, now, let's not rupture a gasket big guy. You are scaring your companion. GOD OF WAR I have no companions! I stand alone! Oh! Evan, right. EVAN My name is Evan. (Offering a hand to Poetry) POETRY
Of course, the joy in our meeting is entirely mine. How did you wind up in the company of such a being as this? (pointing at War) EVAN Well, he agreed to help me find my way back to the trees of unfinished love. POETRY War? Agreed? I've heard of him and that's a miraculous thing in itself, you must be very special. Ha ha. GOD OF WAR
EVAN Well, I don't know about that, but I do know that I need to get to the stream of...ah... GOD OF WAR Enfettered Schizms. POETRY Ah, right, that. Well, it is a truly inspired quest you're on, my boy. Would you mind if I came along and took notes? This sounds remarkably inspiring. EVAN Um, no, I suppose not, sure, come along. GOD OF WAR Great. We'll just inch along now. I've heard of you too, Poetry and you're notorious for dragging your feet. POETRY Like a veritable caterpillar? That is not true. I am thoughtful. We won't inch along. I'll keep up, but you know, that does inspire me. GOD OF WAR Right. POETRY (Music begins to play. War paces impatiently during the song.) CATERPILLAR WALTZ POETRY SINGS INCH AROUND UPON THE GROUND LIKE A VERITABLE CATERPILLAR
CHASING LEAVES OF GREEN UPON THE TREE CLIMB INTO THE TREES IN VIEW IN HOPES OF GETTING CLOSER TO FILLING BITES THAT DON'T TAKE FLIGHT AND IT ALL SEEMS LIKE A DREAM TO BE FREE SHOOT YOUR ROOTS BELOW THE BOOTS OF THE DANDY WORKERS WHO PICK YOUR EARS THROUGH ALL THESE YEARS SPREAD YOUR SEEDS DOWN THROUGH THE WEEDS THE GROUND IS CALLING UPWARDS TO PASS ALONG THE HARVEST SONG AND IT ALL SEEMS LIKE A DREAM TO BE FREE THERE IS JUST A TOUCH OF SADNESS TO THE LOTS OF THOSE WHO HUNT THEY PLAY THE VILLAIN WELL AND TO THEIR PREY THEY BEAR THE BRUNT OF STORIES TOLD TO SCARE THE YOUTH INNOCENTLY STARRING IN THE ROLES THAT THEY BECOME WHEN THE CROWS COME WHEN THE CROWS COME (THE BIG SCREEN LIGHTS UP WITH EVAN’S HALF OF THE HEART PENDANT ON ONE SIDE AND ANNA'S FACE LOOKING SAD AND AFRAID ON THE OTHER, EVAN SNEAKS AWAY) THE NIGHT'S UNWELCOME TIDINGS THAT KEEP WINDOWS BOLTED SHUT IN EVERY RABBIT'S HIDING HOLE AND EVERY TINY HUT AND HIDE THEIR EYES AS SOULS MARCH BY TO A DISTANT FUNERAL DRUM IN STORIES TOLD TO SCARE THE YOUTH WHO PAY NO HEED TO SOME AS THE CROWS COME WHEN THE CROWS COME INCH AROUND UPON THE GROUND LIKE A VERITABLE CATERPILLAR CHASING LEAVES OF GREEN UPON THE TREE AND IT ALL FEELS LIKE A DREAM TO BE FREE GOD OF WAR No, you're not going to hold us up at all. POETRY I have to follow my inspiration. GOD OF WAR I've got your inspiration right here.
POETRY That was uncalled for. GOD OF WAR Let's get out of here, Evan. This guy... (noticing Evan is gone) Oh, that's bloody great. Now he's gone. POETRY Well, let's catch up with him! GOD OF WAR I'll catch him, you just try and keep up. POETRY You don't have to be so competitive. GOD OF WAR (pointing at self) War? POETRY Ugh. GOD OF WAR (Catching up with Evan) There you are, why did you run off like that, as if I didn't know it was Poetry's fault. EVAN No, it wasn't anyone's fault, War, I just need to get there as soon as I can. I get this feeling that something is really, really wrong and I might be able to do something about it. I'm afraid I'm going to miss something important. POETRY (looking at War) Evan, you're dead. And where do you get this feeling? You're not there, you can't know, and there's nothing to be afraid of any more. EVAN I'm still somewhere though. I know I can help her. I know I can. I feel like we're still connected somehow. Is this normal? GOD OF WAR You need to get back to your tree, Evan. Then you'll find out what to do. That's the way it is here. If you're supposed to go to her, you'll find out there. (Drawing sword)
And we'll DESTROY anything that get's in our way! AHAHAHAHAAAAHHHHH!! (Starts to take off running) POETRY Hold on there, my dear Lord of War... GOD OF WAR That's "God" of War. POETRY Certainly, my apologies. If This young man goes to the Stream of Enfettered Schizms, he has no chance making it back to his tree. GOD OF WAR And why is that? POETRY The stream does strange things to those who gaze into it. GOD OF WAR Then we'd better stop him. Poetry and War take off after Evan. GOD OF WAR (cont'd) (Seeing Evan)
EVAN (Stopping) I can't wait! I have to go! POETRY You must wait, there's something we must tell you. EVAN (climbing up the embankment to the railroad tracks) Is this it? Is this the stream? Some stream! It must be miles across! (looking down) These are railroad tracks. GOD OF WAR There are a lot of souls crossing over nowadays, Evan. Mostly because of me. POETRY (To War) You are the flatterer, aren't you.
GOD OF WAR Huh? POETRY Actually, the plagues killed more... GOD OF WAR I've never been one for statistics. EVAN So they don't have a boat any more? GOD OF WAR Nope. It's a train. A long, long, train. POETRY Yes, it is a train of souls to be carried to the glorious... EVAN Wait, you're saying this is a 'soul train' (boogie music starts to play) POETRY Now stop that! Evan, you must be warned about the waters of this stream. EVAN I don't care about these waters! I just know that she needs me. I'll swim across if I need to. GOD OF WAR (chuckling) Not without a kevlar scuba suit. You shouldn't even look into those waters, boy. POETRY I'm warning you, Evan, you may not like what you see in there. It could ruin you. EVAN Ruin me! Ruin me? What am I now? I'm dead, or dreaming. I'm hopelessly lost in a place where I am dead but can still die trying to help someone I can't find! (looking at the water distractedly) I don't even know for sure if she needs help. Though I can feel it deep down. I don't like going to the store for milk and eggs, (getting more distracted) let alone traverse the edges of reality and face some bizarre "inner truth" about myself that I never knew was there. Ruin me. What are those?
(pointing at the water, moans, growls, and howls can be hear coming up from the water.) GOD OF WAR (Looking at the water) Oh, those are thundering nematodes. EVAN What? Nematodes? Nematodes are tiny little worms. Those things are gigantic! GOD OF WAR They get pretty big here. EVAN Uh, yeah! Why are they there? GOD OF WAR They eat the souls of those who try to swim back. You don't think there's a boatman for nothing do you? Those waters are bloody dangerous. EVAN It doesn't matter, I have to get to her before it's too late. POETRY Too late for what? EVAN (As if a confession) She get's bored. So easily. I was her only companion. She was always making me do things, things I was afraid of until she came along... GOD OF WAR She'll just have to find her own form of... POETRY Ahhh...I think I understand now. GOD OF WAR Wha? POETRY You were her only entertainment, weren't you? EVAN Well, not the ONLY form... POETRY You want to be her only form of entertainment, right?
GOD OF WAR What are you talking about? POETRY Evan wants to get to her before it's too late, my dear thane of conflicts. GOD OF WAR Dear what? POETRY Evan is afraid she is going to move on without him. EVAN She won't wait long. If I'm truly dead. She might not wait if I'm just in a coma and dreaming all this. Do you know how boring hospitals are? POETRY AND WAR Yes. EVAN I can see it now. Lighting changes and they look up at a vignette in the big screen that appears with Anna singing. ANNA SINGS THE SADDEST THING THE SADDEST THING IS NOT IN LOSING YOU THE SADDEST THING IS NOT IN MAKING PLANS TO SEE THEM SHATTERED I LAY MY HEAD UPON A PILLOW OF REGRET AND DREAM OF ALL THE THINGS TO DO TO MAKE IT GO AWAY LIKE NOTHING MATTERS THE SADDEST THING IS NOT TO BE ALONE THE SADDEST THING IS NOT TO HAVE A BROKEN HEART THAT LINGERS I COVER COLD NIGHTS WITH A QUILT OF MEMORIES THAT PULLS AWAY FROM ME NO MATTER HOW I TRY TO GRASP SLIPS THROUGH MY FINGERS IT'S NOT THAT SAD TO SAY GOODBYE IT'S NOT THAT SAD TO MAKE ME CRY THIS SADNESS WASN'T IN MY PLAN THE SADDEST THING IS NOT TO WATCH YOU GO THE SADDEST THING IS NOT TO CALL YOUR NAME WHEN YOU CAN'T HEAR ME
I WEAR A VEIL GRIEF FOR ALL THAT COULD HAVE BEEN THAT SLOWLY FADES AWAY LIKE GHOST IN TIME EVEN THOUGH I LOVED YOU DEARLY IT'S NOT THAT SAD IT'S NOT THAT SAD TO LET YOU GO WAS THE SADDEST THING TO SAY GOODBYE TO MAKE ME CRY NOT THE PLAN IS THAT I CAN Lighting changes back to poetry, War, and Evan. POETRY Evan, you realize that wasn't her. EVAN What do you mean 'that wasn't her', of course it was, we were looking right at her through some hole in the fabric of space-time. We were? GOD OF WAR
POETRY Actually, no. What we were looking at was from your mind. That was YOUR vision of what she'd do, not the actual person. EVAN Are you sure? POETRY I've seen it before, Evan, it happens. EVAN How can I see her for real then? GOD OF WAR You can't. At least not until... EVAN Until what? POETRY Not until you cross over. EVAN (walking up to the tracks and looking into the water) But I can't cross over, I have something to finish. I was supposed to get back to my tree and find out what is going on, right?
GOD OF WAR Then you have to go back there now. That would be the safe thing to do. EVAN But you know, I'm TIRED of playing it safe! Where has it gotten me so far? I'm dead? I have no use for safe anymore! I don't care about me. I'm done with me! I have so many regrets about playing it safe and not taking any risks, and there's nothing I can do about it except watch them (looking startled at the water) Flowing by in the water. BARD And Evan stood transfixed as he watched his life float by in the stream of enfettered schizms. BARD BEGINS SINGING THE RIVER HE STOOD UPON THE BANK PERCHED UPON THE RAILROAD TRACK HE WATCHED HIS LIFE FLOAT BY WITHOUT A CHANCE OF EVER GOING BACK THE RIVER ROSE UP TO HIS ANKLES THEN HE FELT THE CURRENT PULL HE ONLY HOPED HE COULD HANG ON UNTIL HIS DEBT WAS PAID IN FULL AND THE THE THE AND THE THE THE THE RIVER KEEPS RISING RAIN KEEPS FALLING FLOOD GATES CREAKING AND DAM KEEPS LEAKING THE RIVER KEEPS RISING RAIN KEEPS FALLING FLOOD GATES CREAKING AND DAM KEEPS LEAKING

POUR DOWN THE RAIN, LET THE FLOOD GATES BREAK AND THE RIVER KEEPS RISING ON BARD AND THE RIVER KEEPS RISING AND THE RIVER KEEPS RISING AND THE RIVER KEEPS RISING Lights go down for a moment and when they come back up Poetry and War are holding Evan, trying to revive him. He eventually awakes EVAN What happened? POETRY In a flash of resonating cerebral reminiscence, you succumbed to devastating waves of sentimental vivacity. EVAN Again, what happened? GOD OF WAR He said you passed out, man. EVAN Oh. The sound of a great steam whistle blasts in the distance. POETRY Ah, now the time of lives crossing into the nether realms. EVAN It's the train? POETRY It is the train. The great steam whistle blows again as the train pulls to a stop before them. A darkly cloaked figure jumps off as "Soul of the Seed" begins to play. The figure takes off its hood to reveal the girl who begins to sing.

You're not Charon KAREN (eyebrow raised) You're a bright one. EVAN I'm sorry, my manners! Forgive me, my name is... KAREN Evan, I know. EVAN What? POETRY She is caretaker of souls, Evan, the keeper of the endless list, the librarian of the infinite volumes... GOD OF WAR Yeah, she knows you. It's her job. EVAN But I thought Charon was a guy. POETRY Oh, now don't be so insensitive to the other gender, my lad. KAREN Charon was my great grandfather. I run the train now. EVAN Wow, ok, I guess things change then, huh? KAREN They sure do. When the old gods are tired of what they do, they can hand the job down to someone else. EVAN Does it have to be a relative? KAREN Not at all. Sometimes the job gets handed down to someone who just deserves it by 'higher' authorities. Isn't that right, War? GOD OF WAR Quite. EVAN
(to War) Is that how you got the job? GOD OF WAR Yes, when the big guy (Pointing up) saw my incredible strategic competence, he saw fit to hand the position to me when I died. EVAN What about you, Poetry, you were human too, right? POETRY Yes I was, then after a reading of one incredible poem from me, the position of 'Spirit of Poetry' was created just for my humble self. GOD OF WAR You're about as humble as a gold necklace on an infected pimple. POETRY What? Do YOU even know what that means? GOD OF WAR Not really. EVAN (looking at Poetry and War oddly) I have so many questions. KAREN I don't have long, I have to get these souls over to the other side. EVAN I know, I won't keep you. Do people ever try to sneak back across on your train? KAREN Sure, there are those who don't want to wait. EVAN Wait? For what? KAREN Due process. There are forms to be filled out before one can cross back over. EVAN You mean you can cross back over? KAREN
Well, of course, silly, where do you think deja vu's come from? EVAN I've heard of reincarnation, but... KAREN Well, there's that and there are also brand new souls that need transport, that's my favorite part. It's such a happy job on the way back. POETRY Evan, I know what you're thinking, and it's not a good idea. Even if it IS a very noble thought. KAREN Evan, if you rode the train into the world of the living, you'd have to be born again as a baby. EVAN Would I ~have~ to be born? KAREN No one has ever gotten back into the living world as anything but a newborn. GOD OF WAR Well, what about all the ghosts... POETRY Now that's just rumors, those people ignored the light. GOD OF WAR But they got back. POETRY In what condition? GOD OF WAR Well, they weren't... POETRY Corporeal? Tangible? In a form that allowed them to interact with their environment in any meaningful way? GOD OF WAR Well, they... POETRY They couldn't do anything! They were ghosts!
(Thunder rolls, Evan sneaks away after looking rather startled) Well... GOD OF WAR
KAREN And there are rules about those who cross without permission, too. Those who sneak back are rarely allowed to cross over without some major atonement or other major act of selflessness. POETRY So, Evan could be potentially trapped, in a dream state, or more like a nightmare, from which there is no awakening. Possibly forever. GOD OF WAR That's a risk that Evan is willing to take, isn't it Evan? (Noticing Evan is gone) POETRY Okay, great, now he's off again. Nice going, War. GOD OF WAR Nice? Wha? You're blaming this on me? You're the one who spewed all that talk about ghosts and not getting to come back! POETRY We were just telling him the truth, weren't we Karen? KAREN Don't get me in the middle of your fight. POETRY I am a pacifist and a scholar, I do not fight. I debate occasionally... GOD OF WAR Oh, please shut up and let's go get him. POETRY Why? GOD OF WAR Why? POETRY Yes, why? Why are we trying so hard to help this young man who obviously doesn't want it?
GOD OF WAR Because we care? Oh, please. POETRY
GOD OF WAR Ok, then maybe it's because you care and I want to WIN! POETRY Of course you do. GOD OF WAR Then we should get after him, then. Fine. POETRY
KAREN I should get back to the tracks, guys, the thundering nematodes are threatening to swarm us. They do that when we stop for any length of time. POETRY Of course, my dear, you do what you need to, we'll see you at a later time. GOD OF WAR Right! Take care dear boatman, or boat-woman, or... KAREN Just call me Karen. GOD OF WAR Right! We're off. END SCENE BEGIN SCENE Evan walks alone back toward the place where God of War told him to go to find the tress of unfinished love. EVAN I know this is the way War told me to come. He said 'go to the stream of enfettered schizms and turn left. I'm sure this should be... EVAN (cont'd)
Wait! Is that it? Are those them? Yes! (He runs to the trees) Where is mine? Where is it? Is...that...oh no. (Evan sees that his tree has been struck by lightning) Great now what? SONG, FAERIE TALES ONCE UPON A TIME EMPTINESS TOOK ME LIKE A CANCER I DREAMED OF REACHING OUT FOR YOU, COMPLETE MY SOUL'S DEMANDS AND I'VE HEARD FAERIE TALES OF THOSE WHO REACHED OUT FOR AN ANSWER AND PULLED BACK WONDROUS TALES OF MAGIC FOLK IN ENCHANTED LANDS AND THOUGH YOU'RE HERE, YOU SLIP AWAY LEAVING ME WITH EMPTY HANDS THE MUSIC'S GONE AND SO TOO IS THE SHIP ON WHICH IT SAILS AND LEFT WITH NOTHING EVER AFTER I DON'T BELIEVE IN FAERIE TALES SOME CAN FIND IT WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED ON A MOONLESS EVENING FILLING VOIDS, COMPLETING SOULS AS EASY AS CAN BE BUT I REACH OUT TO FEEL THE MAGIC'S BREATH UPON MY FINGERS I SIT THERE BLIND AND PARALYZED, WORDS POUR OUT WITHOUT MEANING PRAYING THE MUSE WILL COME HAPPINESS AGAIN WILL BE SORRY IS THE ONLY MUSE WHO WANTS MY COMPANY THE MUSIC'S GONE AND SO TOO IS THE SHIP ON WHICH IT SAILS AND LEFT WITH NOTHING EVER AFTER I DON'T BELIEVE IN FAERIE TALES THE MUSIC'S GONE AND SO TOO IS THE SHIP ON WHICH IT SAILS AND LEFT WITH NOTHING EVER AFTER I DON'T BELIEVE IN FAERIE TALES MAN 1 Hey guys, look who's back. MAN 2 Evan, we're really sorry about everything here... EVAN What happened? MAN 1 It was struck by lightning, Evan. It's gone. EVAN How can this be? What happens to me now?
MAN 1 You're free. Free? EVAN
MAN 1 Yeah, you're free now, you can go anywhere, do anything you want. EVAN That means nothing to me, I needed to find out what I was supposed to do. How will I be able to help her now? MAN 2 If you know you have to help her, then why are you trying to come here? EVAN What do you mean? MAN 1 I think he means you knew from the beginning what you needed to do, you just had to go out and do it. You wouldn't have been able to leave in the first place had you not known. That's why we can't leave, we don't know what we need to do yet. If you had stayed here, you might have been 'killed' (making quotes in the air) When the lightning hit. EVAN That's right! I really owe you guys a debt of gratitude for that whole 'soul collector' ordeal, you really saved me. MAN 1 Well...I have to confess...it was intended as a joke and it kinda got out of hand. The 'soul collector' never actually comes here. He is usually busy messing with souls in the living world. He's not actually ever here. EVAN Oh, but he IS here! I ran into him when I left here. He's a awful fellow, but I got away because I told him I didn't believe in him. He couldn't hurt me. MAN 2 Wait, he DIDN'T hurt you. Evan, he could have ripped you apart if the stories are true.
EVAN Stories? You mean you've never seen him? MAN 2 Oh no, he doesn't come here, he'd much rather corrupt the living or cause a death or something like that. It is said that he is trying to find a way to cross back over into the land of the living but the boatman won't let him across on the train. EVAN Why she called a 'boat' 'man' when she is a girl on a train? MAN 1 We don't question that. EVAN Ah. MAN 1 Anyway, when the soul collector finds a strong enough tie between someone on this side and the someone on the other, he could make a sort of conduit to cross over without riding the train. Oh no. EVAN
MAN 1 You didn't tell him anything about your own situation did you? EVAN I don't think so, I don't know! MAN 2 That might have been why he left you alone. EVAN It might also be why I'm getting this horrible feeling every time I turn around! He's after her! I need to get back to the train! (takes off running) MAN 1 Hey! Do you think that's a good idea? MAN 2 Maybe you should think about it!
Evan runs off stage, lights go down. Lights come up on Poetry and War walking to catch up with Evan. GOD OF WAR So, if you swing the lettuce over your head vigorously, (Swinging his hand over his head and crying out a mighty battle cry) as if to make a distracting feint with your blade before taking off someone's head, you will have dried the lettuce to a crisp perfection. POETRY So why the battle cry? GOD OF WAR That's just reflex. POETRY Ah. Evan runs past them without noticing them. Poetry and War turn nonchalantly and continue talking about proper salad preparation. GOD OF WAR THEN you add the sliced ham and turkey if you are thusly minded... POETRY So when do YOU add the cherry tomatoes? Lights go down END SCENE BEGIN GARDEN SCENE THE GARDEN OF A MILLION TEARS Evan runs past the garden where a number of beautiful women, scantily clad, luxuriate amid their garden. Evan runs past in a full blind panic off stage, then walks casually back with his hands in his pockets to chat with the ladies. EVAN Well, hello ladies. I'm looking for...
ROSE (posing sensuously) We know what you're looking for, stranger. EVAN You do? LILY (stepping toward Evan) Of course we do. SNAPDRAGON You're a nomad, you're a weary soul. ROSE You're a traveller in search of a soft... LILY Warm... SNAPDRAGON Bed. EVAN (dreamily) Ooooohh, yes. I mean, no! I'm trying to find my love. STRAWBERRY We can take you in and make you well. LILY We are all yours now. EVAN (dreamily again) That would really be nice. I've been through a lot here lately. ROSE Why don't you just come in here with us for awhile. EVAN (drowsy) I don't even know who you are or where I am. ROSE I'm Rose LILY I'm Lily SNAPDRAGON
I'm Snapdragon STRAWBERRY I'm Strawberry GOOSEBERRY I'm (Walking behind Evan who jumps as if pinched) Gooseberry. Rose We are the garden. GARDEN OF A MILLION TEARS WE ARE THE GARDEN OF A MILLION TEARS WE ARE YOUR DREAMS WHEN YOU'RE ALONE WE'LL TAKE YOUR HAND AND MAKE YOU LIVE YOUR FEARS AND SUCK THE LAST MEAT FROM YOUR BONES WE NEED YOU. WE'VE BEEN AROUND HERE FOR TEN THOUSAND YEARS WE RUN OUR ROOTS INTO THE DEEP WE LOVE YOUR MISERY, WE DRINK YOUR TEARS YOUR SOUL IS LOST, IT'S OURS TO KEEP YOU WANT US REFRAIN YOU ARE JUST A MAN YOUR TEARS FALL LIKE RAIN RUN IF YOU CAN WE CAN SMELL YOUR PAIN (Poetry and War search for Evan and a rousing flute solo through an instrumental break helps them find him) NOTHING YOU CAN DO NOTHING TO DISCUSS WE BELIEVE IN YOU NOW BELIEVE IN US BELIEVE IN US BELIEVE IN US BELIEVE IN US
The girls sing as they lead Evan to their garden. Just before they get him all the way in, the spirit of poetry and the god of War burst in. The spirit of poetry grabs Evan as the god of War wrestles all four of the women into the garden. EVAN
(as poetry struggles to get Evan away from the cave) War! Wait, we have to help War! SPIRIT OF POETRY He can take care of himself. EVAN But they're ancient! And they're foliage! SPIRIT OF POETRY He'll be fine! We have to get out of here! EVAN (struggling as they go off stage) War! They're not human! Stay out of the bushes! Charlene's in the trees! Charlene IS the trees! War! The two go off stage and leave War to his fate. They come back out talking. EVAN (cont'd) I can't believe we just left him like that. SPIRIT OF POETRY We had to. There was no other choice. His fate was sealed when he came on this quest. EVAN What kind of crap is that? Fate? There is no fate. There is only choice. He didn't have to fall like that. SPIRIT OF POETRY He knew what he was getting into, Evan. He lived for that sort of thing. If he is gone, he went happy. Wars walk onto the stage GOD OF WAR Bye girls! GIRLS OF THE GARDEN (in unison from off stage) Goodbye War! EVAN Huh?
SPIRIT OF POETRY How did...? I escape? GOD OF WAR
(biting down on a piece of lettuce to the sound of a moaning woman) You know how I love salad. The three walk off stage together, when the Spirit of Poetry notices something. SPIRIT OF POETRY (pointing at God of War's chin) You have something in your beard. Is that salad dressing? GIRLS OF THE GARDEN (From off stage in unison) Au revoir, War! Au revoir! GOD OF WAR Yes, it's french. (Grinning) END OF SCENE BEGIN SCENE Evan, Poetry and War stand at the train of crossing talking to the boatman. POETRY Evan, are you sure this is what you want? EVAN I'm sure. GOD OF WAR You're sure you're sure? EVAN I'm sure I'm sure GOD OF WAR You're sure your... POETRY War! Please. GOD OF WAR
I just wanted to be sure. EVAN I'm sure, War. I think I am anyway. I can't tell any more. I just have this constant, overwhelming feeling that I need to go to her. She needs me, no matter what shape I'm in and I'd rather spend eternity as a ghost knowing she's safer than safe here or wherever I am knowing she's not. KAREN If you are fully aware of what you're getting yourself into, I will not deny passage back into the land of living. But be aware of one more thing: time does not flow the same for us as it does for the living. Things may have changed since the last time you saw her, and they might not. We just won't know until we get there. Oh, ok. EVAN
KAREN Other souls will be coming and going and it might get a little...hectic, and disorienting for you in the passenger car. The newborn souls are mostly sleeping through the ride, you know how babies are in the car. EVAN No, I don't. We never got to have any children. KAREN I'm sorry. EVAN Me too. Can we go now? (turns to Poetry and War) I don't know how to thank you guys. POETRY Think nothing of it, we really didn't do that much. GOD OF WAR Well, I wouldn't say that. POETRY No, you wouldn't. EVAN Well, War's right, you two did do a lot for me and I'm going to miss you both. You're not at all what I thought gods would be like.
GOD OF WAR No? EVAN No, you're more like...friends. POETRY I think that's gods ARE supposed to be like, Evan, but don't tell War that. GOD OF WAR I'm standing right here! POETRY Yes, but you don't know we're talking about you. You are? See? KAREN We have to go now. The thundering nematodes are about to attack! EVAN Right, well guys, I mean, God of War, Spirit of Poetry, it has been a pleasure panicking with you. POETRY And we with you. GOD OF WAR Do not speak for the God of War. And we you, m'lad. Now go! (with a flourish from his sword) We'll hold off the mighty worms until you are clear! Evan gets on the train and the lights go down to the sound of battle. END SCENE END ACT 1 FOR ACT 2 BEGIN ACT 2 BEGIN SCENE GOD OF WAR POETRY
Anna knocks Evan off the balcony and screams. ANNA (Alone on the balcony) Evan! What have I done? Anna walks out on the stage while the scene changes in the background. ANNA(cont'd) I can't believe he's gone. It's been six months now and it seems like it's been just a few seconds. Lights come up on the background and it's Anna's apartment. Her friends, Ashley, Brinn, and Barb, are there. BARB Anna, we need to talk to you. ASHLEY Sweetheart, it's been six months since the accident and you're still moping. BRINN We want you to come out with us tonight and enjoy yourself for a change. BARB Yeah, come with us. ANNA I'm sorry, I just don't feel like it tonight. BARB You haven't felt like it for months. ANNA I can't help it, I just don't want to go. BRINN You don't want to go on, you mean. ASHLEY That was mean, Brinn. BRINN I didn't mean it to be mean, but it is the truth. BARB Brinn!
ANNA Brinn's right, Barb, I don't want to go on. I want him back. ASHLEY He's not coming back, Anna. I'm sorry, baby, but he's not. ANNA I know, Ash, but I can't stop thinking about him. BRINN Anna, you know we love you, but it's time to move on. BARB Brinn's right Anna, it's time to start thinking about the future. SONG "MOVE ON" THE GIRLS SING ONCE YOU MET A BOY WHO LOVED YOU VERY MUCH AND YOU LOVED HIS KISS AND HE LOVED YOUR TOUCH AND AND HE, AND THE YOU THE YOU TWO MADE ONE PLANNED YOUR LIFE HUSBAND WAS BECAME THE WIFE
CHORUS BUT NOW, HE'S GONE YOU'RE STILL SO YOUNG IT'S TIME, TIME TO MOVE ON YOU DON'T YOUR LOVE BUT DON'T EVERY DAY HAVE TO FORGET CAN STILL LIVE ON FORGET YOURSELF BRINGS A BRAND NEW DAWN
SO CHERISH EVERY DAY AND LOVE YOUR LIFE ANEW AND WALK OUT THROUGH THAT DOOR WITH US WALKING NEXT TO YOU CHORUS AND NOW, EVEN NOW HE'S GONE LIFE IS FOR THE YOUNG AND THERE'S TIME, YES THERE'S TIME TO MOVE ON
ANNA You are right, girls, it IS time to move on. The girls breathe a sigh of relief and start toward the door ANNA (cont'd) But I can't. Not now, I'm not ready. (she follows them to the door and watches them each leave) BARB We're not waiting forever, Anna. You have to come back to us soon. I have been your friend for a long time, and I want you back. I'll be there when you're ready. ANNA Thanks, I think. (Anna closes the door and picks up a photo of Evan) Where are you, Evan? You can't be gone like this. Not like this. I can't believe it! I just can't believe it! (Starts shouting) There has to be something else! There has to be something, some-where else. I can feel you close to me! I need you so much! (Shouts at the ceiling) Is there something else? Is there something else? I'm tired of this! I don't want to be alone, but I don't want anyone else! I want to know! (Music starts) SONG: THE END ANNA SINGS AND IN THE END IS THERE JUST DREAMING? IN THE END DOES IT GO ON? IN THE END DOES SOMETHING BECKON? LIKE THE COMING OF THE DAWN? IN THE END ARE WE DELIVERED? IN THE END DOES SOMEONE CALL? IS THE END JUST A BEGINNING? IN THE END DO WE JUST FALL? WHAT IS THAT TWINKLING IN THE CORNER OF YOUR SPARKLING EYE? ESSENCE INCORPOREAL OR REFLECTIONS OF A LIFETIME PASSING BY? DO GODS GATHER 'ROUND US AS ETERNALLY THROUGH SPACE WE FLY? IMAGES TO BE SEEN IF THE MIND WOULD ONLY OPEN UP ITS EYE.
ARE WE JUST PRODUCTS OF THE PROCREATION OF OUR KIND? OR ARE WE EACH AN ASPECT OF A SINGLE UNIVERSAL MIND? UTTER GENETICS AND EXPERIENCES OF OUR KIND. INSIDE A TEMPLE BEARING ONE NEW SOUL TO WHICH IT IS ASSIGNED? CHORUS AND IN THE END IS THERE JUST DREAMING? IN THE END DOES IT GO ON? IN THE END DOES SOMETHING BECKON? LIKE THE COMING OF THE DAWN? IN THE END ARE WE DELIVERED? IN THE END DOES SOMEONE CALL? IS THE END JUST A BEGINNING? IN THE END DO WE JUST FALL? IS THAT A SOUL DEPARTING AS THE FINAL BREATH IS THROUGH? OR IS IT JUST EVAPORATION OF THE MORNING'S DYING DEW? CELLULAR DEGENERATION CREEPING UP ON ME AND YOU. THE DOWNY EVIDENCE IN TELLING WHERE THE FLEDGLING ANGELS FLEW.
ANNA (cont'd) No, I won't move on, not yet. I'm not ready. A few days pass and Darkness appears outside Anna's apartment. STALKER BEGINS WITH ONLY DARKNESS'S HEAD VISIBLE I GET A I'M THE I'M THE I'M THE MOST PECULIAR FEELING THAT YOU DON'T KNOW WHO I AM, SHADOW IN YOUR CLOSET I'M THE GREAT-GRANDSON OF SAM, MYTH THAT'S TOLD TO TEACH YOU TO BEHAVE OUT OF FEAR, SYRUP ON THE PREACHER'S TONGUE, THE HONEY IN YOUR EAR,
I'M THE IRE THAT GUIDES THE SISTER'S SWITCH, THE LUST IN FATHER JONES, AND THEY CAN'T IDENTIFY ME, THEY JUST FEEL ME IN THEIR BONES, SOME KNOW ME AS A TRICKSTER, SOME SAY I BEND AND TWIST, MY GREATEST TRICK WAS TEACHING YOU THAT I DO NOT EXIST,
NO, I AM NOT A METAPHOR THAT STINGS THE MODERN MIND, AS YOU MARCH ONE TO THE NEW DAWN I AM COMING UP BEHIND, I WALK UNHINDERED IN YOUR SLEEP, UNKNOWN THROUGHOUT THE LAND, AND AS YOU PURGE ME FROM YOUR THOUGHTS, YOU LET ME GUIDE YOUR HAND, I DON'T MAKE YOU PULL THE TRIGGER AND TAKE GUILT FROM OFF THE TASK, AND I DON'T HAVE TO MAKE YOU DO IT, ALL I HAVE TO DO IS ASK, I CANNOT RAPE THE WILLING, THAT'S THE GLORY OF FREE WILL, I'M A FUNGUS ON YOUR LIMBIC THAT SUGGESTS YOU GO AND KILL.
Lighting changes and reveals that Darkness is dressed as a priest. He knocks on Anna's door. She goes to the door. DARKNESS Excuse me for the intrusion, but are you Anna? ANNA Yes. DARKNESS I am Father Richard Logner. I heard about your situation. I'd like to talk to you for a moment if I could. ANNA How did you hear about...it was Barb wasn't it? DARKNESS Yes, it was Barb, she told me about your loss. She also expressed concern for you. ANNA She couldn't keep a secret if it was super glued to her... DARKNESS Can we talk for a moment? ANNA Yes, I suppose, would you like to come in? DARKNESS That would be lovely. ANNA Would you like a cup of coffee?
DARKNESS That would also be lovely. ANNA How do you like it? DARKNESS Sweet and dark. ANNA Sugar and a little cream? DARKNESS Yes, the darker the better. Anna goes to the kitchen to get Logner a cup of coffee. ANNA So what did you want to talk about, Father? DARKNESS I want to talk about you, Anna. Have you gotten out of the house lately? ANNA No, I'm not ready for that yet. DARKNESS When did your husband...cross over? ANNA It was about six months ago. DARKNESS I'm sorry to hear that. How close were you? ANNA What? We were married? Very close, what do you think? DARKNESS I'm sorry, I meant, were you together long before you were married? Sometimes, people marry who haven't had the time to really get to know each other. ANNA Yes, we were engaged for over a year. DARKNESS You can live with someone all your life and not really know them, my dear.
ANNA I'm a good judge of character. DARKNESS You let ME in. ANNA (looking suspiciously) So, you must be a good person, right? DARKNESS You do seem to have a knack for picking out the good ones. ANNA I hope so. DARKNESS Let me get to the point, Anna. Your friend is concerned that you might need a little shove, or a friendly fire lit under your...ah...shall we say, lack of initiative? ANNA I really don't... DARKNESS I know it hurts, Anna. I know it's hard to move on without feeling like you've betrayed someone, but trust me, he doesn't have a clue what's happening to you right now. ANNA That's a terrible thing to say! DARKNESS But it is the truth. He is in a place that is so wonderful, all he wants to do is wait for you to join him. ANNA So why shouldn't I just end it all right now, then? DARKNESS Oh my goodness! No! That would be an unforgivable sin and you would never see him or anyone else again! You have to live a full, good, rich life full of wonder and love. Fill your plate to the rim and never look back. ANNA I'm not that brave, Father.
DARKNESS There is courage in you that you don't even know about, my dear. And you may have courage, because wherever you go, I will be with you. Music starts and Father Logner begins to sing. Song, Snow Flowers DARKNESS SINGS WINTER'S END, THE SUN SHALL LEND A HAND TO KILL THE SNOW COLD DAYS WE'LL SPEND AS MARCH SHALL SEND US STRUGGLING AS WE GO THE STRENGTH IS THERE TO BURDEN BEAR ALTHOUGH WE'RE FEELING LOW LIKE FLOWERS' WILL UPON THE HILL TO PUSH UP THROUGH THE SNOW. WHEN TIMES ARE HARD WE'RE DEALT A CARD TO DISCARD OR TO KEEP. AND CHANGES MAKE, GET WHAT WE TAKE AND NOT LOOK BACK AND WEEP. THE TREES ARE FROZEN, SOME ARE CHOSEN TO FALL DOWN AND DIE, THEN ASK GREEN JACK TO PLANT THEM BACK TO GROW BACK TO THE SKY. STOP AND DALLY AS WE RALLY COURAGE TO GO ON ADULTS IT MAKES AS BALLS IT TAKE TO STAND AND FACE THE DAWN SO TRY NOT TO FALL AS STRENGTH WE DO CALL FROM SOMEWHERE WE DON'T KNOW AND WHERE IT'S BEEN, ALWAYS WITHIN, LIKE FLOWERS THROUGH THE SNOW LIKE FLOWERS' WILL UPON THE HILL TO PUSH UP THROUGH THE SNOW
ANNA Father, you have truly inspired me! DARKNESS That's wonderful! When would you... ANNA I'm going to travel the world! DARKNESS You're... ANNA And I'm going to take Evan with me! DARKNESS But... ANNA
Not physically of course. In my heart! DARKNESS In your heart? ANNA (Taking Darkness's hand and showing him to the door as she speaks and he stammers.) Yes! He's still with me, Father, that's why I can't seem to leave him behind like everyone seems to want me to do. So I've decided that I'm going to get away from everything, but I'm taking Evan's memory with me! We're going to see the world...together! Good bye Father, and thank you again! DARKNESS (Outside the door) That's wonderful, indeed, little one. You see the world with your dead love. You see how empty it is when no one can get close to you. You will see. You will see me too, because wherever you go, I WILL be with you. Darkness disappears and the lights shift to Anna preparing to leave for "the world" ANNA (Packing) This is going to be so great, Evan. We will see it all together just like we talked about. You were always so scared about travelling and leaving the safety of home. I'm going to show you that it's not as bad as you thought it would be. Music begins as Anna begins her travels. Darkness sings "The Wolf" as Anna and dancers act out her travelling from place to place. Men try to approach her throughout the song, but are rebuffed by Darkness who consistently imposes himself between them as if she is his territory. She notices the men shunning her, but does not realize it's Darkness behind it all. SONG, THE WOLF DARKNESS SINGS AS YOU WALK ALONG THE PATHWAY PRAY THE SUN WON'T LEAVE YOUR SIDE
DARKNESS CRAWLING UP BEHIND YOU WOLVES COME OUT FROM WHERE THEY HIDE YOU'RE UNNOTICED AS ACROSS THE COSMOS DISTANT GODS DO RIDE NOW'S THE TIME TO DO OR DIE SO TURN AND DRAW YOUR SWORD OR RUN AND HIDE IT TRACKS YOUR LAGGING FAILURES EYES GLOW RED AND STILL BEHIND THE TREE IT SMELLS THE FEAR INSIDE YOU ONE MORE FALLS TO WOLF SHE DID NOT SEE. THE ROADS ARE PAVED BY THOSE TOO SLOW AND THOUGHTLESS OF THE DANGERS CLOSE BEHIND SURVIVED IN KIND WHEN YOU FIND THE MIND TO SPIN THE WHEELS AND LISTEN TO THEM GRIND THEY TASTE THE WEAKNESS IN YOU HOWEVER MUCH THEY GORGE, THEY DO NOT FILL THERE IS NO HIDING FROM THEM THE PACK OF HUNTERS PROWLING FOR THE KILL AND AS YOU WALK ALONG THE PATHWAY PRAY THE SUN WON'T LEAVE YOUR SUNNY SKIES JUST ONE CHANCE TO STAY ALIVE SO TURN AND PLANT YOUR BLADE BETWEEN ITS EYES
Lights go down as Anna tries to enjoy herself and finds it increasingly difficult to do so. Scene changes to Evan on the train. Evan is besieged by passengers coming and going, not knowing when to get off the train, and not being able to contact Karen. The ride seems endless. EVAN (sitting on the train, looking out the window) How long has it been? How long have I been here? (to another passenger) Excuse me, sir, do you know anything about the train? MAN I had cancer.
EVAN Oh. I'm just trying to find out how long I've been here. MAN 2 It's a one-way trip, boy, don't you know anything? EVAN Well, that's not entirely true. MAN 2 (to another passenger) Look who's the new conductor. (They laugh) Fine. EVAN
(The train stops and the passengers get off, still chuckling. Others get on) I don't know when to get out. It keeps going back and forth across the river. I have to help her. I have to get to her. I'm afraid that if I get off now I'll miss her! I told her forever. I promised. Please. (falls asleep) The lights dim and spotlights Evan. Evan sleeps. A figure comes into the dim spotlight. BARD Evan. Evan, wake up. EVAN Huh? What? I was asleep? BARD Yes, it's time to get up, you've had a rough way to go, young man. EVAN You mean this whole thing has been a dream after all? BARD (Laughs as the light come up to reveal that they're still on the train) No, you're still on the train. EVAN What? This can't be! It should be a dream, I should wake! Please! I was on my honeymoon.
BARD Evan, you are dead, and it's time to face it. Things change. Some times for no reason. EVAN It's not fair. BARD Things sometimes seem like they aren't fair, but there is a grand scheme afoot and we are just pawns. Even the Gods must play along. EVAN I don't understand. The Bard takes out his flute and starts to play Changes. SONG, CHANGES BARD SINGS INSTILL THE SOUL INTO SILVER FALL IN LOVE WITH THE MOON SEE THE PATH LAID OUT BEFORE YOU AND EVERYTHING CHANGES STANDING TO FACE THE SUNRISE DOES IT ALL HAPPEN TOO SOON WISH IT COULD BE LIKE IT USED TO AND EVERYTHING CHANGES THROUGH THE FOG TOO FAMILIAR IS WALK ON THROUGH AND THERE IS NO THERE IS A DISTANT SCREAMING THE VOICE AND HOPE THAT YOU'RE DREAMING OTHER CHOICE
SOAK IT IN AND DISBELIEVE THE VISION REAL IS SO MUCH WORSE THAN LIES WHAT YOU DO IS ALWAYS YOUR ON DECISION NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR CRIES SEARCH FOR MORE THAN A PURPOSE SOMETHING MORE THAN "TO BE" PATIENCE IS YOUR UNDOING WAIT AND WE SHALL SEE GOD CHUCKLES AT YOUR INERTIA BEGIN THE ULTIMATE CLIMB THROW YOUR HEART TO THE FOUR WINDS EVERYTHING CHANGES IN TIME.
BARD Now get off the train. (Lights go down on the bard) Evan gets off the train only to find himself standing in front of the remains of the shattered tree to which he was originally tied. It is also the honeymoon tree. The tree has been carved into the shape of a chair. Darkness stands before it and a very old Anna is helped out to sit in it. NURSE Here you go, Mrs. Willoughby. ANNA Thank you so much dear. NURSE I have to go back inside for a few minutes, but I'll be back out in no more than ten minutes to check on you. ANNA That's fine, I'm just fine right here. EVAN (seeing darkness hovering by Anna) Get away from her, Darkness. DARKNESS Well, if it isn't our wayward young adventurer come home to claim his wrinkled prize. EVAN I said... DARKNESS I heard you, boy, but you're too late, she's lost to you. EVAN I don't believe you. DARKNESS You're a ghost, boy. You can never touch her again. She's unreachable. EVAN (running to Anna and falling at her feet)
No! Wait, that doesn't matter! I promised forever and I meant it. I will be here forever and nothing can change that! DARKNESS She didn't wait for you Evan. I seduced her a hundred times within a year of your death. She's a cheap slut and you missed it! (Laughs maniacally) EVAN Liar! DARKNESS Well, what are YOU going to do about it? You're too scared to do anything, Evan. You're a coward! You're afraid to go outside at night. You're not going to do anything. EVAN (Turns away from darkness) I'm NOT afraid. DARKNESS Oh, but I think your are. Here I stand, waiting for your lady love to pass away so I can claim her soul and you're over there, trembling in fear of me. EVAN I'm not afraid of you! DARKNESS (Triumphantly) Then make your choice, her time is almost up and she will be mine. NO! EVAN (lunges at Darkness and the two begin to scuffle) Scene changes to Poetry and War. POETRY War! Evan is in trouble! He needs us! GOD OF WAR (Watching the fight while moving as if watching a boxing match) What? Why should we go over there and interfere with...
POETRY Because Evan is our friend! We have a duty to... GOD OF WAR (still watching the fight) Duty! You? I'm the God of War, I'm, ohhh yeah, I taught him that move, I'm the one who knows about duty. Our duty, jab, JAB, is to watch and see who wins, and You know who I'm betting on. POETRY War, I can't believe after all we've been through with him, you'd just let him... GOD OF WAR All we've been through? Are you serious? He nearly got me married of to those...actually rather beautiful...young ladies from the garden...who made that most sensuous salad... War! POETRY
GOD OF WAR And not to mention nearly getting us killed, well, you, killed by those damnable thundering nematodes! My sword stays here. POETRY Well not my pen! GOD OF WAR Your pen? Your pen! POETRY Yes, my friend my pen is mightier... GOD OF WAR (sarcastically) Oh no. Don't tell me! DO NOT say that your pen is mightier than my sword! Do Not! That is the single most cliche piece of tripe you could ever say. Even YOU couldn't be that cliche! POETRY Actually I was going to say that, but only because I used my pen to fill out THIS! (holds a page from a catalog in War's face) What's this? GOD OF WAR
(leans head back a bit to get a better look at the page while Poetry reaches in his back pocket) This is an order form from Smith and Wesson. (War moves the page to see that Poetry is holding a gun behind the page in War's face. War bursts into delighted and surprised laughter) Ok, then! Let's go help! POETRY Thought so. GOD OF WAR You know, I think I'm rubbing off on you. POETRY In your dreams, pal. Lighting changes and the scene shifts back to Evan and Darkness tussling. EVAN You'll never have her! DARKNESS She's already mine! EVAN Never! DARKNESS Always! ANNA Evan? EVERYTHING freezes and they all look at Anna who sits staring out over the sea. ANNA (cont'd) Evan? I know you can hear me. You've always been with me. My friends abandoned me, well, I abandoned them in their eyes. I never met anyone else who could take your place. I was true to you my whole life. (Evan looks at Darkness with a 'harumph') You said "forever", and so did I. One little life is nothing compared to the vastness of eternity, and forever is eternity.
(Evan walks away from a stunned Darkness toward Anna) Even after you had gone, I could feel you with me. Our love is so strong it reaches across the veil of death and keeps us tied together like the chains in our tree. And now, here I sit, waiting for my last few moments to pass before I get to be with you again. I hope you still love me even though I'm old and wrinkled. (She chuckles a bit) ANNA SINGS THERE IS NO ONE ELSE FOR ME BUT YOU EVAN THERE IS NO ONE WHO CAN TAKE YOUR PLACE ANNA THERE IS NOTHING LEFT FOR US TO DO EVAN I'M COMPLETE WHEN I LOOK AT YOUR FACE BOTH OUR LOVE IS FOREVER EVAN OUR LOVE MAKES...US...ANNA? Evan looks down and sees that Anna has passed away. EVAN Anna? No! Wait! ANNA (standing behind Evan in her young form again) EVAN ANNA! EVAN! ANNA They start to embrace, but Darkness steps in and grabs Anna's arm. DARKNESS She is MINE! EVAN
No! GOD OF WAR NOT SO FAST, DARKNESS! DARKNESS What? No, Wait! POETRY It's over Darkness, you lose. DARKNESS No! Wait a minute! There's still a chance... GOD OF WAR There is no chance in hell, and I mean that, that she will lose now, she's dead and the bet was "until death". You lose! DARKNESS Crap! EVAN Um. Guys? POETRY You won Evan! You and Anna have won! EVAN I am SO lost right now. What are you talking about? ANNA Evan? GOD OF WAR We had a little bet going on. ANNA (Squealing in delight) Evan? You're here? You're here! EVAN Yes, Anna, I'm here for you. I promised forever and...A bet? POETRY Not really a bet, more of a little side wager. ANNA Who are these people, Evan? EVAN That's a bet! What is GOING ON HERE!
POETRY You said "Forever", the both of you. EVAN (irritated) Yeah? ANNA Evan! Am I dead? What is happening? POETRY And you meant it. EVAN Yes, honey, you are dead, so am i and... (even more irritated) YEAH?!? I know I meant it, so what? POETRY Well, we gods got together when we heard that word "Forever" and thought we'd put you to the task. There were some of us who believed you did mean it and there were those of us who didn't. War and I were on your side the whole time. Darkness bet against you and did everything he could to see to it that you failed. ANNA Gods? POETRY Yes, my dear. Your "Father Logner" is the spirit of darkness and corruption of the innocent. He tried to seduce you to the darkness of loneliness and loss for the remainder of your days without Evan. He even went so far as to keep you alone when others might have tempted you by getting between them and you. ANNA I thought it was odd that time in Italy when that cute young cabbie looked at me in the mirror and jumped out of the car. DARKNESS Yeah, that was me. GOD OF WAR You know, that was really stupid, Darkness, if you had just left her alone, she might have given in. DARKNESS
Yeah, I know, I realized that after the fact, but you know hindsight... GOD OF WAR Right, always 20/20. DARKNESS Go figure. EVAN AAAHHHH!! Wait a minute. This whole time, we were just a bet? Of all the blasted, uncaring... GOD OF WAR Now hold on a minute. We gods are not as uncaring as you might think. It was I who struck the tree with lightning so you would come back to the train. That was pretty caring of me. POETRY And I was the one who inspired you, Anna, to see the world with Evan's memory. DARKNESS I thought I did that. POETRY Nope, me, sorry. DARKNESS Crap! EVAN You mean you manipulated the whole thing so that you could win some stupid divine BET!? POETRY Now hold on a second, Evan, I told you, you won. You won! And you fell off the cliff of your own accord, that WAS an accident. EVAN What do you mean, "You won" you mean "You" won, don't you? POETRY No, Evan, Anna, you both won. You said forever, you meant it, and you proved it. ANNA And? POETRY
And, my dear, it is my greatest honor to tell you that you two are the new spirits of love. What? ANNA AND EVAN
POETRY The gods may play with people, but they can be generous. We struck a deal with the big guy, that if you were to win the bet, you could be forever examples and inspiration to young love everywhere! Wherever young lovers are in trouble or in need of hope, it will be you two who can be there for them. You really ARE forever! GOD OF WAR And here's your symbol. When people see this, they'll think of you two and the trials you went through to be together. (points out two half heart pendants chained together on a large screen up stage) I made that. POETRY It was my idea. EVAN So who was the guy on the train? POETRY He's a friend of mine. (waves to the bard, the bard waves back.) ANNA Well, I guess there's just one thing to do! Music begins as all the spirits come on stage and begin settling the bet with Poetry and War SONG OUR LOVE IS FOREVER (ROCK VERSION) EVAN THERE IS NO ONE ELSE FOR ME BUT YOU ANNA THERE IS NO ONE WHO CAN TAKE YOUR PLACE EVAN THERE IS SO MUCH LEFT FOR US TO DO ANNA I AM COMPLETE WHEN I SEE YOUR FACE
TOGETHER OUR LOVE IS FOREVER OUR LOVE MADE US WHOLE OUR LOVE IS FOREVER WE'RE REALLY ONE SOUL OUR LOVE IS FOREVER AND OUR LOVE IS FOREVER OUR FOREVER ABOVE FOREVER LOVE
