John Peter Zenger, a German American journalist during seventeenth century, is a person

who gives me a great inspiration to further my education in media studies. He was accused of libel
due to his published work criticising about government corruption, and was apprehended
afterward. However, in his trial, his attorney argued that the material didnt matter in this case, but it
was a freedom of expression that mattered. This trial had a lot of impact on American thought and
was a part influencing American revolution. Currently, in Thailand, there is a deterioration in
freedom of expression and press, after the establishment of the military junta who seized control in
the country. One of the cases is that a number of people were arrested due to their actions against
the draft constitution, such as distributing vote no leaflets. I always believe that the right to
express ideas and thoughts belongs to everyone in the world and should not be violated. I want to
bring those freedom back to Thailand. Asking myself how can I do that? my answer is I dont
know either. However what I know right now is that it all starts from education. Media is one of the
most powerful tools in the world, and I strongly agree with one of the quotes from myself, Media,
when being in the hands of evils, can bring great harm to humanity, yet when being in the right
hands, can bring prosperity, as it has a power to control peoples mind. I believe that this program
will give me insight about how media, in various forms, works and I can apply my knowledge to
pursue my dream in the future.
I have an opportunity to work in the school journalist club, the Vanguards, which is one of
the media forms. I became the editor in chief of the club, when I was in grade 11. It gave me a lot
of experience and understanding working as a journalist. In every issue, my friend and I write
columns, called the mind of the Milds, expressing our opinions about the school. It paved me the
first step toward the insight of what freedom of expression really is. I am never afraid of
complaining about school problems, as I believe that it can help improve the school. It is the same
when people have rights to express their opinions about the country, including criticising
governments work. Those little voice can help develop the country. I am also in Model United
Nation club. I have learnt a lot from attending conferences in different schools. It expands the
scope of my knowledge as I have a chance to be delegates of many countries. I try to attend a
different committee in each conference, nevertheless, my favourite is a human rights council. It
raises urgent issues involving the violation of human rights in various forms. Despite the
undeniable fact that human rights belong to every human on earth, some people try to find an
excuse to prove that its wrong. Not only do I concern about the violation of the right of expression,
I also concern about the right of women. Consequently, I work as a volunteer in Alliance Anti
Traffic, or AAT, an organisation that aims to protect the rights of women and children, especially
cases involving human trafficking. With my little hands, I have an unwavering faith that one day
they can be a part that helps those whose rights are not respected.
I would like to describe myself as a philosophic person, not because I like reading
philosophy books but because I love questioning. Since I was really young, I always have a lot of
questions in my mind. I like to question most of the things Ive learnt and seen including
education systems, regimes, government, scientific theories, and etc. I remember questioning the
existence of buddha when I was in grade 4 and my classmates started to look at me weirdly.
Sometimes, when I try to talk about my doubts with other people, they usually tell me to just follow
things that exist for a long time as they believe that it is the best. However, I have a different view
from that, and I am not telling that they are wrong. I believe that it is important to question whatever
we do or know, as it will give us purposes and meanings of what we are doing. If we just follow
what others do without knowing why, we will let our mind be a slave of the masses. Another
important trait is that Im a reflective person. When I finish doing something I always reflect on it to
see what else I can do to improve. Even though I feel that what I have done is already nice, I still
want to get better at it. No one is who they used to be yesterday, and in each day I want to be the
better version of myself.
With all the experience I have and my passion to improve the country, I believe that I am
suitable to be selected as one of the students in your university. I know exactly what my goal is and
I have a strong intention to pursue my dream. In addition to this, I believe that my traits can help
me become not only a successful learner, but also an effective leader in the future.
