Question 1: How has your SOCTEC2 allowed you to understand the impact of science on society?

The world we live in today is without a doubt influenced by the development of science. Its a

known fact that science or even anything related to it is a continuing effort to discover and increase

human knowledge and understanding. Science before was not an organized branch and so were the past

scientists; they were instead primitive men for whom the Earth was just a big puzzle. Then again, without

the continuous effort and study of both previous and present scientists, almost everything, from the

simplest to the most advanced technologies that we benefit from would not be here. This just means that

ever since the ancient times and up until the modern day today, it has always been the role of science to

further develop the society and its impact is very visible. Moreover, although modern science is somewhat

new having its recent origin, it has made very rapid progress and completely transformed the manner of

our living. From ideas that were just created from ones imagination, those things are very much a reality

now. Progress in agriculture, medicine and healthcare, communications, transportations, and so on, is a

part of our daily living today. In addition, scientific advancements have shrunk the world and people now

are well-connected with far off class, and as a result, have sharpened our perception of future prospects.

In the duration of SOCTEC2, it has taught me that will all the successive discoveries, inventions,

and other developments in the fields of agriculture, medicine, communication, etc. that have given

comforts and conveniences to the society, theres no part in the world where people are truly contented or

satisfied, at peace, and living without difficulties. Sure the aim of developments in science were to

produce and maintain an age of pure success, but on the contrary, it has lead to greater problems such as

new diseases, environmental crisis, violence, and war to name a few. More values are being ignored, the

social fabric of society is breaking up, and the environment is in crisis. From there, it could be deduced

that science has been a boon to mankind, yet it has also proved to be a bane at the same time.
Question 2: What among the influences and consequences of science and technology have you been able

to understand more fully?

Among the influences and consequences of science and technology, Ive been able to understand

more fully its role, importance, and effect in meeting other national objectives. By other national

objectives, it includes healthcare, national security, and environmental protection.

HEALTHCARE - Maintenance of health and prevention of illness are among the highest goals

of our society. Science and technology have become critical factors in achieving those goals, and today,

the most visible public policy issue in health care is cost. The effects of technical progress on costs

depend to a large extent on the social and institutional structures surrounding the health care system. As

the nation undertakes a broad reassessment of its health care system, a central challenge is to create

administrative structures that promote the development of medical technology while improving care and

containing costs.

NATIONAL SECURITY - A major challenge facing the military today is to maintain

technological superiority in the face of declining defense budgets. Meeting this challenge will require a

reexamination of the broad scientific and technological base that contributes to military needs, including

research and development in government laboratories, in industry, and in universities.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION - Environmental degradation continues to accompany

many aspects of economic growth. At the same time, science and technology have exposed new issues of

great complexity and uncertain consequences, such as global warming, the destruction of the stratospheric

ozone layer, and the contamination of water supplies. In spite of this, almost all fields of science and

technology are still the main contributor to the reduction of environmental degradation. For instance,

biotechnology, materials science and engineering, and information technologies can enable the efficient

use of raw materials and prevent pollution at the source.

Question 3: Has your SOCTEC2 course impacted your future career goals? How?

Civil engineering has played a critical role the quality of life in last 50 years. From

developing improving agriculture through water resource development to the design of building to protect

us from natural hazards, to rapid and dramatic changes in transportation systems, civil engineers have

developed the basic infrastructure on which the modern the modern society depends. And with the

knowledge Ive learned from SOCTEC2 course, I do think that it has impacted my future career goals in

some ways.

With science comes technology, and technology isnt simply just televisions, computers, phones,

etc. - it is engineering science. Civil engineering is one of the many professions that just like science and

technology, dated back to the ancient times. Furthermore, alongside the continuous advancements in both

science and technology, engineering have also been developing in a great way. However, civil engineers

were the first engineers and one of the few today who continue to be dedicated to technology

development for the common good and the society.

With those in mind, SOCTEC2 has given me a new perspective on how science and technology

should be used to make sure it would benefit the people and not create more problems. As Ive mentioned

earlier, civil engineers are one of the few people today who use the advancements we have to cater

services for the society. I guess, we, the future engineers of the modern world, should maintain that image

since the society is reliant on what we do. We should continue to design and build an infrastructure that

ensure rigidity and enhances the life of people examples - schools, colleges, bridges, highways, water

supply, drainage system, sewage system and many more; provide a much better transportation system;

and also provide reliable and safe structures which resists the effect of natural calamities like floods,

earthquake and others that the worlds is experiencing today.
