Insurance Commissioner Altmaier’s Message to Floridians:
Prepare Now for the 2017 Hurricane Season
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier has
an important message for Floridians ahead of the hurricane season beginning
on June 1.
“Florida’s unique risk to tropical weather,
especially during the hurricane season,
means all Floridians need a disaster plan,”
said Altmaier. “The time to evaluate your
insurance coverage, fortify your home and prepare for how to protect yourself
and your family is now.”
Altmaier is also advising Floridians to take advantage of numerous hurricane
preparedness resources available to them on the Office of Insurance Regula-
tion’s (Office) website and offers the following additional tips:
 Review your insurance policy with your insurance agent or insurance
company to make sure the coverage is adequate to your individual needs. The Green Thumb Garden Club of Santa

 Inventory your valuables and possessions using a home inventory check-
list, which is available as a form you can download and print. If you prefer to
use a smartphone, there is a link to a free app created by the National Associa-
tion of Insurance Commissioners, which allows you to take pictures and add
descriptions of your belongings.
 Know the phone number and contact information for your insurance agent
and insurance company. Make sure to have easy access to it if you must evacu-
ate your home.
 Most importantly, have a plan for what you will do if a storm system is
expected to impact where you live. Do not wait to evacuate if it becomes nec-
essary.

Hospital Week ends with award
By Ron Kelley

National Hospital Week was concluded at Healthmark Regional Medical Center Friday with a
lunch of fresh grilled hamburgers and a special awards ceremony. Chief Operations Officer Ge-
rald Beard welcomed staff and thanked everyone for their dedicated service to hospital and the
community.
Beard also recognized several longtime staff
members for their years of service. Dietary
Supervisor Pat Pryor, Purchasing Manager
Alita Kay Vaughn and Jacquelyn Campbell,
L.P.N., each received pins for their 10 years at
Healthmark. Home Health Director Rebeca
Scott also received a pin for her five years of
service.
Free drawings were held for various prizes,
ranging from lawn chairs and gift cards to gift
baskets and goodie bags. Some of the winners
were present, while others were still on duty or worked different shifts.
Hospital Week is traditionally when the Healthmark Employee of the Year is announced. Recipients have ranged from Dietary staff to
Nursing to Finance Director and more. Any full-time staff member is eligible. This year, the winner
came from the medical staff.
Dr. Tom Roberts was selected as the 2017 Healthmark Employee of the year. Dr. Roberts is known
in the community primarily for his practice at the Healthmark Walk-In Clinic, but he has also assisted
in the Emergency Department. Dr. Roberts is popular with staff and patients alike. He has become the
primary care physician for many local and areas residents.
As part of the Employee of the Year honor, Dr. Roberts received a plaque, a cash award and a per-
sonal gift from Gerald Beard. In presenting Dr. Roberts with the award, Beard read the inscription,
“Thomas Roberts, M.D. – A Dedicated Practitioner – Employee of the Year 2017 – Thank you for
your outstanding service and dedication to Healthmark of Walton, Inc.”

Walton Co. accepts ordinance regulating
medical pot
The ordinance limits the number of dispensaries to two, with one to be located
north of the bay and one south of the bay.

Walton Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday morning to accept the
County Attorney’s ordinance of the state’s legalization of medical marijuana.
Assistant County Attorney Sidney Noyes presented the ordinance to commission-
ers regulating dispensing of the drug. The ordinance limits the number of dispen-
saries to two, with one to be located north of the bay and one south of the bay.
The criteria guiding location of the dispensaries will be the same as what guides
the location of places that serve alcohol, such as the number of feet it can be lo-
cated from churches, schools or day cares.
Advertising for the dispensaries cannot be cartoonish in design.
The board heard recommendations from citizens such as James Hurley, a Walton
County resident, law enforcement officer and a member of a prevention group.
He urged the board to run a background check each time the operator of the dis-
pensary applies for license renewal.
Hurley also asked commissioners to add recreational centers to the list of places
the dispensaries cannot be close to, and to fund and develop curriculum to edu-
cate school children about marijuana.
In addition, Hurley asked that operators not be allowed to give out promotional
items, and the operator meet a minimum age requirement.
Noyes will bring back an amended ordinance to the board for approval, but the
moratorium that Walton County had requested expired last weekend.
“This ordinance had to be written before I could get input on it,” said District 3
Commissioner Melanie Nipper.
However, Noyes said the dispensaries fall under the criteria set by the state of
Florida.

will be similar.
“It requires patients be on a list,” she said.
Noyes advised commissioners to move forward in adopting the criteria so there WE NOW RENT PONTOONS AND 3 SEAT
would be no gap and changes can be made later.
There were also speakers against adopting the ordinance, with two of those being JET SKIS
pastors of local churches.
After Pastor Ben Barton pled with commissioners to not adopt the ordinance as MEMORIAL DAY TILL AFTER LABOR DAY OR ON REQUEST
he believed it would destroy families and innocent lives, District 5 Commissioner PONTOONS ARE 87.50 PER HOUR OR 487.50 PER DAY.
Tony Anderson tried to explain that this is an ordinance to control the sale.

them as restricted as possible. What we’re trying to do is do our job to restrict
access to children. It’s not that I necessarily agree with the amendment.”
Physician Carolyn Zonia also tried to explain that medical marijuana is to ease

is not the same as recreational marijuana.
However, Pastor R.W. White said as a pastor for 40 years and dealing with suf-

The researchers said brain scans will be required to further underline the findings and should investigate the direct effects of
specific action video games on the caudate nucleus and the hippocampus. 'The risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other causes of
dementia are varied and complex, but this study does not add Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto to that list,' he said. 'This
study focused on a specific navigation task in young adults and did not look long term at memory and thinking skills, so we
cannot draw any conclusions about video games and dementia risk. 'We do know that a healthy diet and plenty of exercise are
both important for reducing dementia risk.' And Professor Chris Chambers, a Cardiff University brain scientist, told
MailOnline: ‘What this study tells us is that gamers, not surprisingly, learn to pay attention differently to non-gamers. ‘But the
study doesn't show that gamers have a shrunken hippocampus or that they are more prone to brain diseases. ‘The researchers
850.835.2558 didn't study MRI scans, but even if they did, drawing conclusions about Alzheimer's disease we would require us to track
gamers and non-gamers into older age and compare rates of diagnosis. ‘What the researchers propose is an interesting conjec-
ture but it remains a conjecture.’
Previous research has also shown brains of people who regularly play computer games differ from those of infrequent gamers.
901 Hwy. 20 East A study in teenagers showed the 'reward hub', which is involved in addiction, was larger in regular players.
Brain scans showed a larger ventral striatum, which is the hub of the brain's reward system, in regular gamers.
