Activity: Interview Process for Teacher recruitment

Teacher recruitment is the process of providing an adequate number of quality applicants.

Teacher selection is the process of choosing only high-quality employees from among the

assembled applicants. Hiring, supporting, and sustaining effective teachers is one of the most

important responsibilities of schools leaders. If we believe that teaching and learning are the core

of schooling, then we also understand why good teacher selection is indispensable to high

achieving schools. An examination of the historical context of teacher effectiveness reveals that

concern about capable teachers is not a new development. Studies on the qualities of effective

teachers in the 1920s focused on personality traits. Today, such studies focus on teaching

methods, behaviors toward student learning, mastery of competencies, professional decision

making, and interaction of pedagogical and subject area knowledge (Lederman & Niess, 2001).

A well-constructed selection process should create a situation where teachers are selected based

on a multitude of factors that ultimately influence student achievement. There are some major

factors that must be taken into consideration when scheduling interviews. First, the search

committee must determine how many people will meet with each applicant one-on-one, in an

open-forum, or during professional presentations.

Good interview questions will illuminate the experience of an applicant well enough to indicate

the prospects for his or her success in the position. All questions should be related to the

knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully carry on the duties and responsibilities

of a position. Questions about basic workplace competencies, work ethic, decision-making,

problem-solving, and interpersonal skills that indicate a persons professional character are also

appropriate. The criteria for determining which questions are acceptable are:

Ask only for information that is needed to make a hiring decision;

Know how the committee will use the information to make a hiring decision and
Recognize that seeking information that is job-related can be difficult to defend.

Interview questions can be informational, situational or behavioral. Informational questions

ascertain the facts of an applicants education and work experience. Situation questions ascertain

an applicant responds to a hypothetical or real life situation and also test an applicants ability to

analyze and solve problems, or make decisions.

Sample Interview Questions:

1. Why did you decide to become a teacher?

2. What type of classroom management structure would you implement if you were hired?
3. How have you used, or how will you use, technology in the classroom?

Specific outline of acceptable answers of these questions

1. Ans. Reasons to become a teacher: Many teachers discover that their love and affection

with a constructive way to children draws them teaching, or that their love of learning

makes them passionate about teaching. A teacher may be seen as a leader, a mentor or

even a surrogate parental figure.

2. Ans. The strategy on classroom management might include using encouraging positive

classroom behaviors, emphasizing equitable interactions with students, being aware of

high-needs students, engaging in appropriate levels of cooperative behavior and

establishing clear learning goals. Give some examples like, In my first-grade classroom, I

implemented a system where the students were each given a clip on a chart. At each

infraction, the students would move their clip along a progression of colors. The

discipline ranged from a warning, losing half of recess and losing all recess to a call

home or a visit to the principals office. I made very few phone calls.
3. Ans. Make a list of technology it have used in the classroom at school,
