Madison County Highway Department: Heavy Equipment Operator
FLSA status: Non-exempt
Job Status: Full Time
Hours: 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. M-F or 6:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. during chip seal season

Job Duties:
Operates various heavy equipment including grade all, pay loader, travel loader, road grader, backhoe,
matrim, steam rollers, low boy tractor trailer and related attachments in effecting the general
maintenance, repair, and safety of County roads and right-of-ways.

Regularly checks and maintains heavy equipment to ensure proper fluid levels and mechanical functions
including checking tires, lights and changing oil.

Patches, chips, and seals roads, digs ditches, scrapes, grades and maintains road berms and shoulders.

Replaces or repairs damaged warning signals and street and road signs, as assigned.

Loads and dumps crushed stone, sand, and salt from trucks, and removes now from county roads using
appropriate equipment.

Removes debris and brush from County areas using appropriate equipment, as assigned.

Periodically may perform duties of Truck Driver or Laborer as situations require or as directed.

May serve as temporary leader of work crews, as directed.

On 24-hour call in emergencies.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Must possess a valid CDL license and have the ability to legally operate all department vehicles.
Knowledge of and skill in the operation of trucks and heavy equipment used by the Department.
Practical knowledge of the standard practices and procedures involved in road maintenance and
construction. Knowledge of safety procedures for working in or around heavy equipment and/or
working around traffic.
