The Impact of Slavery

In Uncle Toms Cabin (1852), Harriet Beecher Stowe argues that the idea of owning a person
and exploiting them for your own use is a inhumane way of treaty someone and that it should
never be done, it enforces the idea of slaves been human being just like anybody else and it
goes into depth of the life of a family of slave and the hardships of been separated and been
mistreated. The novel gives many examples of the slave owners been hypocritical like when
Toms owners are shown as kind and intellectual people but when St. Clare had financial
problems St. Clare had to come to the decision of selling their slaves to a slave trader showing
that even the most innocent can be corrupted with the darkness of slavery, this shows that even
the kindest owners were not good enough to slaves and that slavery was a very ugly thing that
has destroyed Toms family, later we get to the ugly part of slavery when Tom is taken to the
plantation to work as a slaves worker were they show the struggles and hardship of the daily
lives of a slave, they totally show the brutally and abuse many went through when they lived in
the plantation. This is a very important because this shows that even the best situation of
slavery wasn't even that good because at the end they still got sacrificed, but the worst of
slavery was dark and evil and was just a horrible because these people got brutally beaten, the
women got sexually abused and still much violence was appearing at this time and that no
matter what slavery wasn't okay, I think this make sense because around this time the south
was trying to keep slavery in the south because it was a big part of their economy so they said
that slavery wasn't bad and that they weren't doing anything wrong and that they treated slaves
like family that there wasn't anything wrong with slavery. The audience for this novel is pretty
obvious it is the north, Harriet Beecher Stowe, wanted to open the eyes of the north by giving
them a view of slavery in the south and how it was a horrible thing happening and that they
should do something to stop it.
The problem that revolve around this book would be the issues of slavery and no matter
how it was shown it was still a very horrible thing happening, for example the best scenario of
slavery was shown at the beginning of the book as Tom whole family is shown to be living a
good life with their owners because, their owners are kind hearted and a have a good
relationship with each other and pretty much the best life that a slave could be living, and soon
we are hit with devastation. The owners are going through financial problem, and the only way
St. Clares saw a way out was to sell Tom and Harry the son of a slave woman named Eliza
even though St. Clare's said that she would never sell him, showing even the darkness of
slavery can affect the kindest owners making them into hypocrite people telling us that the best
of that slavery could offer wasn't even that good because Tom whole family still got backstabbed
and sacrificed by separating them from each others. Clare had never pretended to govern
himself by any religious obligation; and a certain fineness of nature gave him such an instinctive
view of the extent of the requirements of Christianity, that he shrank, by anticipation, from what
he felt would be the exactions of his own conscience, if he once did resolve to assume them.
For, so inconsistent a thing is human nature, especially in the ideal, that not to undertake a thing
at all seems better than to undertake and come short. that being the quote is very important
because, St. Clares knows that this isn't very religious and it wrong yet he does nothing to stop
them because he is afraid of how difficult it can be to act on his own. Showing that the only way
for an African American to be truly safe is to be free. Much of this book consist of pathos and try
to connect with the feelings of the readers so they can feel sympathy towards Tom and his
family and friends by giving them the sadness of these slaves so it can open the eyes of the
northern people and make them do something to change.
The Civil War happen because of many conflicts between the north and the south and I
believe this is important because this book contributed to the idea of fighting not only to bring
back the north and the south but to also fight for a bigger cause such as slavery. The civil war at
the beginning was a war to bring the North and the South together but then President at the
time Abraham Lincoln thought that maybe bringing the south together was the only cause of the
war but the issue of slavery and that there was a bigger cause for the war. This book may of
open the eyes of many southern it is even thought of as the book that caused the war, because
it really gave a vivid image of the lifestyles of many slaves, causing the northerners to have
compassion causing the union of a better a northern army. Why did this help during the war
because people were now fighting for the freedom of slavery and you are getting all these
young men who want to join the union to fight for change and even African Americans join the
union army? Like Abraham may have said So you're the little woman who wrote the book that
started this great war. he is potentially right because, this book gave a better explanation on
why the northerners should go to war against the southern.O, don't, don't!" said the woman,
looking surprised; "it'll get you into trouble." Just then Sambo came up. He seemed to have a
special spite against this woman; and, flourishing his whip, said, in brutal, guttural tones, "What
did year, Luke, fooling' a'" and, with the word, kicking the woman with his heavy cowhide shoe,
he struck Tom across the face with his whip. actions like these are what really got northern
causing them to feel like it was time to stop slavery causing them to start a new future from now
on.
Harriet Beecher Stowe has a lot of bravery by writing something true yet dark about America,
she wrote the truth about slavery and how despicable it was it was a really dark time for America
we are ashamed of. This book symbolizes progression towards not slaves but northern,
because they got a chose to change their society by getting rid of slavery in the country. Much
of this book has the dark aspect of America because most of the things they made slaves do it
was pretty wicked and inhuman. The character represent the era of slavery in the 1800s and
how African Americans were humans as well and should be treat them the same as any regular
human being, and shouldnt be exploited. Much of this book wants to help open people's minds
to help them take the right choice.
