Advertising Impact on Society

Advertising is tool that companies utilize in order to make their products known to

society and also aims to increase the sale of a product. No doubt, the publicity is a great tool and

it benefits companies to become a powerful industry. Logically, the publicity is not a free a

service and it sometimes could be costly for companies. In fact, exists information that

arguments that companies invest thousands and millions of dollars to project their products to

society. Hence, the advertising uses the media as the main tool, because these are so diverse and

have so much expansion and impact on the public. On the other hand, advertising has been

evolving at the same time as technology. This breakthrough has benefited companies that use

advertising, because today exist more tools to project their advertising as internet, mobile

applications, social networks, television and obviously the radio. As a result, today we can see

advertising everywhere in our community. This sometimes can be harassing to us but it is part of

the economic system of our country. Definitely, people should learn to live with advertising

because it influences negatively our society. Advertising is a monster that tries to convince us to

buy their products regardless of the effort we make to acquire their products. Also, their

messages deceive us and create another perspective of real life. It is very clear that industries

want our money. For these reasons, the population must know how advertising affect us

economically, emotionally, physically and even in our behavior.

First, the people must know that economic problems are one consequences of publicity's

impact in our society. This is a clear example that many companies have been reaching their

target, because we as society consume their products. As a result, these industries have been

increasing their capital while society has been suffered severe financial troubles. These financial

problems are result of the advertising's strategies. The most common of economic problem is the

power that advertising has in order to convince the people to spend their money in expensive

unnecessary items. This action occurs, because the advertising transmits messages with order to

project that public need this item in order to be happy or feel comfortable. According with

"Advertising Management Concept and Cases" written by Manedra Mohan. The author explains

us that people who buy unnecessary products were convinced by the advertising that they need

the article. Even, the public can spend large amounts of money on an item that they do not need.

For instance, nowadays, people spent a lot of money in smart phones, and this is a consequence

of advertises, because the people always want to buy phones of known brands or popular brands.

The cell phones are so expensive that people do not care to waste their money instead of buying

benefit items. Another way how publicity affects our economy is that the advertising raises the

price of products and services. This action occurs because the publicity foments sales of the

products. So, if the article is being sold very well, the companies opt to increase the product's

price in order to benefit by themselves. In the article "Advertising Increases Product Prices, But

May Save You Money" which appears in "Orlando Sentinel" written by John Koenig. The author

comments us that the prices of a product increased due to the demand of the product. Moreover,

the author explains us that the price of the product increase because the company invest their

money in the publicity. In addition, some competing companies may even carry out joint

advertising to increase the demand for the products of the industry. These strategies of the
Marquez 3

companies deteriorate the economy of the community, and it convert us in victims of its

commercials.

Next, advertising affects our society emotionally because of their commercial videos.

This situation occurs, because advertising aims to provoke emotional reactions in the consumer

during the advertising video or after the purchase. Also, these videos almost always create

aesthetic stimuli of advertising in order to attract the attention of customers or buyers, its goal is

to create an interest to customers for the products and thus provoke fidelity and increase sales.

Therefore, exist many emotions that people have when seeing, or buying a product. The first

emotional damage provoke for advertising is that people are disappointed by the purchase they

made, because they had another perspective of the product. Normally, they believe that the

product is one hundred percent the same as the commercial one, but this is really a lie. According

to the article "11 Ways Advertisers Make Food Look Delicious" which appears in web site

"Dental Floss" written by Colin Patrick. The author tells us that it is a strategy of the companies

to make the products looks awesome in order to attract the attention of the public. Therefore, the

products which appears in commercial videos have been creating by professional people as

stylist food and professional photographers. A clear example is the Carls Jr commercial videos.

In these videos we can see a delicious burger with great proportions and an exquisite meat, but

when you attend the restaurant the burger is not resemble at the commercial video. This way the

advertising affects many people emotionally, because they feel disappointed and cheated

In other hand, the publicity has been evolving and it more common to see it on the internet.

Hence, everybody knows Internet advertising is not controlled and it is more probably affects

emotionally to the people when they are watching it. In this situation, the people could be

affected emotionally, because they do not want to watch advertising in online, because this
Marquez 4

publicity is annoying. So, many people even us sometimes feel frustrated when we want to do

an activity on the internet, and advertising begins to appear. According to the article "Online

Advertising a Frustration for Consumers" which appears in McKinley Marketing Partners written

by Susie Aubuchon. The author mentioned us that internet extended the opportunity to broadcast

advertising videos, but these videos are very annoying to consumers. Definitely, the

uncontrollable advertising that appears on the web pages irritates people. Another action that

affect emotionally people is the content of advertising, because it can bother society. This kind of

publicity is more usual in alcohol, tobacco and condoms products, because those products are

aimed at adults. For this reason, is common see sexual or violent material in these publicity.

Although, these publicities are aimed at adults, these publicities sometimes are transmitted in

family hours. According to article "Persist on Tobacco" written by The Christian Science

Publishing Society. The authors mentioned that those videos of tobacco must be restricted,

because the videos have material that encourage to young people to buy the product. In effect,

the companies use this kind of videos in order to satisfy the people, and increase their sales. For

this reason, this video should be restricted, since it sometimes is offensive for many people.

Clearly, another problem that publicity cause in our society is that it affects our health.

Although, people do not believe it, this is a one of the reason how publicity affects us. The

advertising become us to materialistic people or consumerist people, and it negatively change us

because we start to be victims of advertising. In other words, people are more interest to buy

articles and they do not care if they are victims of publicity. As everybody knows to buy items

implies economic expenses, and this is how it affects our health. Because our debts make us

slaves of work. Many people have to work more days and more hours without rest in order to

buy expensive articles or pay their debt. Hence, after working with much effort our body
Marquez 5

deteriorates, and we begin to have health problems. According with the article "How Does

Advertising Influence People? " which appears in the web site Chron written by George Boykin.

The author mentioned us that nowadays the most common problem in our society is the stress.

The stress affects our health, and it is consequence for work more time in order to pay our

expensive products or our debts. An obvious example is the young people in this century. They

usually buy very expensive or luxury cars, because they were convinced by commercial videos.

Then, as they have a debt with their car, they have to work many days and that creates stress in

them. The other way how publicity affects our health is because the publicity promotes the

consumption of products noxious to health. This an instance of how companies are not interested

to people, because they are only interested in our money. There are a variety of products that

affect our health, but just to mention one would be the energizing drinks. It is a fact and almost

everyone knows that these drinks are harmful to health as they include harmful substances. Even

so, there are many people who consume this product as these companies create awesome and

even perfect commercials to convince the public that if they buy the product, they are going to to

be active all day. According with the article "The impact of food advertising on childhood

obesity" written by American Psychological Association. The author comments us that sixty

percent of the foods that are advertised are specifically harmful to the human body, and should

be consumed only in very small portions. It is very clear that people should be more careful in

the things we buy, even in those that affect our health.

Finally, advertising has a great influence on society's behavior and people must know it.

This happens because the advertising is very well done and has changed the mentality. Plus, This

only does not affect adolescents, but also all people who do not have a definite attitude toward

advertising. It is the messages that have commercials that make people have other behaviors, and
Marquez 6

criteria. The first influence of commercials is that it makes the most inhuman and selfish people.

This occurs because people only worry about buying products and forgetting about things that

are important as helping others. According to the article "the High Price of Materialism written

by Tim Kasser. The author tells us the publicity turns people into materialistic people, and these

people have other negative interests that in the long run make it a selfish person. Another change

of attitude in people are because they are not sufficiently mature to assimilate between good and

bad actions. A clear example is that children imitate everything they see in the publicity or

movies as they think it is right. According with the article "Health and Media" explains that The

influence of media effects how kids perceive what is and is not acceptable. For instance, smoking

is an example. When celebrities and role models are depicted smoking, it appears to be a normal

and acceptable behavior. So, to with drug use, drinking, cell phone use when driving, physical

violence, and so forth. Finally, the companies create inspiring commercial videos that bring with

them stereotypes, which are the idea or image accepted by most as a pattern or model of qualities

or behavior. Of course, this creates a change of behavior in our society as people judge and

create their own stereotypes. For example, we can see that almost all videos create a stereotype

that women should be extremely thin, imposing standards of beauty totally removed from reality

and as a consequence this affects our society. Of course, women begin to have sometimes

negative changes in their behavior or become depressed people because they want to have the

women's body of advertising. Definitely the advertising has a great influence in our society and

they can modify our attitudes or ideas.

In conclusion, advertising has great power in the consumerism of society. We should not

be influenced by advertising, because it is certainly a big factor in our society. Clearly, society is

part of our system and will never disappear as it contributes economically to our nation. But, I
Marquez 7

think if it should be more controlled since it is a very powerful tool. As a result, the public can

become materialistic people and affect our ideas or health. On the other hand, we must know that

materialism makes us hostile. The only option for advertising not to affect us is that we carry out

activities and have a healthy social life. In addition, we must be informed of the strategies used

by the companies to convince us to buy their products. It is for reasons that we should be more

involved in family activities and enjoy things that are worthwhile as spending time with their

children or parents instead of becoming victims of advertising. We should definitely do other

kinds of activities instead of spending more time on the television or internet if we do not want to

be victims of advertising.
