1. A series circuit consists of a non-inductive resistance of 5 and inductive reactance of 10

. When connected to a single-phase ac supply, it draws a current, i(t)= 27.89sin(628.3t-
45) A. Find: (i) the instantaneous voltage applied to the series circuit (ii) Inductance (iii)
power drawn by the supply. [ v(t)=310.9sin(638.3t+18.43), 0.0157 H, 1945 W]

2. A choke coil connected across 250V, 50 Hz supply taking a current of 10A at 0.8 pf
lagging. What will be the power taken by the choke coil, when it is connected across a
200V, 25 Hz supply? [1.75 KW]

3. A capacitor is in series with a 2 resistor and carries a current of 10A to store energy of
0.25 J at 100V ac supply. What is the supply frequency? What is the current, phase
difference, is the frequency become 10,000 Hz? [325 Hz, 49.34 A, 8.9]

4. Two impedances Z1 and Z1 are connected in series across 240 V, 50 Hz supply. The total
current is 3A. Impedance Z1 has 0.8 pf lagging and voltage across it is twice that across
Z2 and in quadrature to it. Determine (i) Z1 and power consumed in Z1 (ii) p.f of Z2 and
power consumed by Z2 (iii) Draw phasor diagram showing all voltages, currents and
phase angles. [Z1=57.24+j42.93 , 515.18 W, 0.6(lead), 193.2 W]

5. A 100V, 60W lamp is to be operated off 220V, 50 Hz mains. What (i) pure resistance and
(ii) pure inductance placed in series with the lamp will enable it to be used without being
run over? Which method is more economical? [200, 1.038 H, (ii) economical]

6. A potential difference of 200<30 V is applied to two impedances connected in parallel.

The current in the respective impedance branches are 20<60 A and 40<3 A. Find
(i) Active power consumed by each branch and whole circuit. [3.46, 7.13, 11.2 KW]
(ii) Reactive power consumed by each branch and whole circuit. [2, 3.63,1.73 KW]

7. A coil having a resistance of 10 and inductance of 0.04H is arranged in parallel with

another coil having resistance of 2 and inductance of 0.16H. Calculate (i) Current
through the combination (ii) power absorbed when the voltage of 100V, 50 Hz is applied
(iii) Estimate the value of resistance and reactance that would take same current and same
p.f. [7.923<-60.03, 395.7W, 6.304, 0.0348 H]
8. A circuit consists of R=35 in series with an unknown impedance Z. For a sinusoidal
current of 2A, the observed voltages are 200V across R and Z together and 150 V across
Z only. Find the value of impedance Z and draw phasor diagram. [45+j60 ]

9. A circuit consists of following in parallel, a resistor of 500, an inductor of 2H and a

capacitor of 10F. The circuit is supplied from a 200V, 50 Hz. Calculate (i) Total current
drawn from the supply (ii) Apparant power (iii) Active power (iv) Reactive power and
(v) power factor. [4.01<4.43, 801.99 VA, 799.6 W, 61.95 VAR, 0.99]

10. Determine current, power and power factor for each impedance shown in the figure
below. Also, calculate total current, power and power factor and draw phasor diagram.
