Final Major Project

Charlotte Kelly
I decided to choose idea 1. I made this
decision based on both the feedback from a
survey carried out, as well as the fact i am
more passionate about the fi rst idea. The
survey explained both ideas and asked the
respondents to chose between them. As
can be seen from the screen shot adjacent, the fi rst idea was a lot more
popular than the second. This was for a variety of reasons, the most
mentioned reasons was due to the development of the idea. It was
believed by the respondents that "the story is more developed."
Although most of the respondents agreed the story for the short fi lm is
more developed, it was also mentioned "the story line has room to be
developed." This gives me space to improve and develop the plot,
allowing for the production to really resonate with the intended
audience .

After sending out a survey, asking how my initial idea could be

developed, i received a number of responses. These allowed me to pick
out a few ideas that could improve my work. The fi rst of these was the
idea to add a tertiary character, who is humorous in nature. The
respondent claimed that this will make the overall piece less heavy. I
believe this is a good idea, using a character for comic relief will add
diff erent dimensions to my idea. It may also allow the audience to
relate to the piece and enjoy the piece more, as such a young audience
may not enjoy such a serious and heavy fi lm. The second idea was for
some of the fl ashbacks to happen outside of the room. I decided to use
this idea as I believe it could show more character development, as the
couple eventually retreating into their room could speak for their
characters. All the ideas were suggested for the story line, rather than
the visual aspect of the fi lm, as i believe this is the strongest part of
the production.
The target audience for my piece of work would be a younger audience
of the age 17 30. This is due to the fact that the story follows the
story of young adults, aged from about 18 20 years old. The story
falls into the genre of social drama, and would be considered a
coming of age story. This style of fi lm usually resonates with a
younger audience, as the characters and the issues raised in the story
will be relatable. An example of a coming of age fi lm is the fi lm
Paper Towns, this fi lm follows a two individuals facing issues that
would only concern those of a certain age. This resonated well with a
younger audience, as they were able to identify with the characters.
This fi lm had the target audience of 12 24. This is a large target
audience, as it aims at pre teen audience too. This diff ers ever so
slightly from my own target audience, as mature themes will mean the
fi lm would not be appropriate for the pre teen audience. Due to the
romantic nature, my production will most likely resonate more with a
female audience, as this genre is more popular with this gender group.
This is due to the stereotypical view that women are more empathic,
but previous studies show that this genre of fi lm does target a female
audience. According to IMBD, the fi lm Titanic had a female target
audience. Although this fi lm diff ers from mine in a number of ways, it
shares the romantic tones. This makes me believe my target audience
would lean towards female. However, the violent content and scenes of
drug abuse may make the production more neutral. Similar productions
like Skins or Glue, from the creator Jack Thorne, have similar
content, showing how young adults deal with growing up, showing
comparable imagery to my production. These productions had a target
audience of 16 20 year olds, of mixed genders, despite the romantic
themes. This means that over all, my production has the potential to
relate to a mixed gendered audience. Due to the young audience, it is
most likely these individuals will be students. This means they will fall
into the socio economical group E. My production will explore these
characters lives, living in a run down area, and the issues this will
cause them to face. One of the key parts of the story is the struggles
with money and how this is addressed. This may be deemed relatable
by individuals who live in a similar manner, in areas such as London
and the South East of England. The life style represented in this
production will refl ect that of a working class, less well off
individual. It will also explore the tricky lifestyle of drug abuse and anti
social behaviour. In this piece, a variety of people from diff erent
ethnic backgrounds will be represented, allowing for a wider audience
being able to relate.
The BFI supports and regulates short fi lms in the UK. They off er
specialist advice on what category the fi lm fi ts into, as well as the best
to distribute the work. This is done through the comparison to previous
work that falls into similar categories or genres, and how well they
resonated with certain audiences. BFI is also known for providing up
and coming directors and creators with funding to produce short fi lms.
This allows for new directors/creators to be able to get their work
produced and distributed in an eff ective and professional manner.
Regulation on productions similar to mine used to be handled by the UK
Film Council; however this was taken over by the BFI in 2011, meaning
that they have taken over the regulatory duties. This assures that the
content produced is appropriate for the targeted audiences, as well as
refl ecting the same ethical and moral standards of the BFI. This is
important as any inappropriate content could cause off ence, and
potentially damaging the reputation of the company. The BFI has
backed a number of independent fi lms in the past year, such as City of
Tiny Lights, a critically acclaimed adaption of a novel, was funded and
distributed by the BFI, allowing it to be a moderate success to its target
audience, as well as promoting a new creators directorial debut.
Another production, similar to mine that was backed by the BFI was the
2016 short fi lm Alien. This explored visual aesthetics in a similar way,
using expressive cinematography. This was an independent fi lm, backed
mostly b the BBC, but distributed by the BFI. This fi lm was a moderate
success within its target audience, and reached a wider audience,
thanks to the BFIs distribution.
A fi lm that is similar to mine in story and target audience is the 2017
new release Lovesong. This fi lm has a similar target audience of 16
25, and addresses similar issues in a coming of age story. This fi lm is
also independently funded, and according to critics, has the potential
to be the best independent fi lm of the year. This is due to the
involvement of up and coming director So Yong Kim. This would be
considered a main competitor for my work, should it be distributed
professionally this year. This is due to the similarity in the styles of the
productions, as well as sharing the target audience. However, this fi lm
aims to target a largely female audience, where as my production has a
more mixed audience, this may give it a slight upper hand. My
production also shares a similar target audience of 16 25 with the
new release fi lm Colossal, this fi lm performed extremely well with the
intended audience at Toronto Film Festival and is acclaimed to do well
in the box offi ce this year. These fi lms would be considered to be the
main competitors with my production, due to the similarities in the
audiences. The most important factor would be the distribution and the
eff ectiveness of which. This important aspect would be the diff erence
between a successful or unsuccessful production.
I believe that there is a gap in the market for a piece like this, as it is
largely experimental. It challenges the idea of a story being told using
only one location, and the eff ectiveness of this convention. With further
research, I dont believe that a piece such as this has been attempted
before, and could be considered a fresh take on the typical coming of
age story. I believe this could be largely eff ective with the target
audience, as it uses light comedy, contrasting with more realistic and
dark undertones to tell the story.

This production will posted on my personal Weebly website, as well as

YouTube. This is due to the fact these platforms make it easier to share
media, therefore the distribution of my production will be easier. These
platforms also make it easier to view the production; especially by my
target audience, as younger viewers tend to use such platforms more
than an older one. In regards to the brief, the future shorts company is
about the distribution and creation of fi lm, focusing on a new, fresh
image. By placing it on these platforms, it brings the productions into
the future.
In the event that my actors cannot make the fi lming days, or pull out
last minute, I have organised for understudies to take their place. This
is so that the fi lming process is not hindered and the production can
still commence. I have been particularly careful due to the fi lming days
being so close to the fi nal, June 9 t h deadline. In the case of the main
actor playing the character Alex availability changing, the character of
Alex will be played instead by Owen Boyce. If the same issue arises
with the actor playing the other lead, Freya, the part will be taken on
by Emily Manning. Should the location become unavailable, a secondary
location has been organised. The address of which is 19 Masons road,
SL2 5JQ. This location also has all the requirements needed for the
production. Should any of the footage become physically unavailable,
or not be to the standard required, the 31 s t of May has been reserved
for reshoots.
