PART TIME DIPLOMA / CERTIFICATE COURSE IN PLASTICS

1 ABOUT INDIAN PLASTICS INSTITUTE


1.1 Background:

Indian Plastics Institute (IPI) is a technical professional body


registered in 1985 as a Public Trust as the successor to Plastics &
Rubber Institute (Indian Section- Plastics), which was established in
1963 as an Overseas Section of PRI London, now merged with
Institute of materials (IOM).

IPI has 11 Chapters and 8 Sub-Chapters in all major Centers with


over 2500 members spread all over India, divided into 5 Regions

WESTERN REGION
EASTERN REGION
CENTRAL REGION
NORTHERN REGION
SOUTHERN REGION

Each Region is looked after by a Regional Advisor, under the overall


supervision of the Governing Council.

Before starting DIPI (Diploma of Indian Plastics Institute) Course IPI,


as Indian section of PRI (Plastics & Rubber Institute, London) was
conducting LPRI Course of PRI London and has trained about 2000
members.

1.2 Objects:

The main objects of the Institute are:

a. To advance & develop for the benefit of its members & the public,
the art, science, technology & engineering of plastics, natural and
synthetics high polymers and related materials
b. To form and organise a strong professional body of those
connected or concerned with plastics, natural and synthetic high
polymers and other related materials.

c. To institute, supervise, advise upon and advance the standards
and methods of education and training at all levels in the fields of
plastics, natural and synthetic high polymers and other related
materials and in related technical and non-technical subjects
including finance and management thereof.
d. To project plastics, natural and synthetic high polymers and other
related materials as eco-friendly materials with excellent
recyclability and their contribution in conserving natural resources
and saving energy.
e. To project the vital contribution of plastics, natural and synthetic
high polymers and related materials in various fields of national l
economy and the role they play in improving agricultural
productivity and in cost effective protection, preservation, storage
and handling of products in infrastructure development; in
economizing construction costs; in providing affordable
Healthcare.
f. To disseminate for public awareness all relevant information
about plastics, natural and synthetic high polymers and related
materials so as to remove myths and misconceptions arising out
of ignorance and to educate public, NGOs and policy makers and
the media about the beneficial role plastics play in improving
overall quality of life.

1.3 Membership:

IPI has a membership of over 2500 spread all over India and one of
its objects is to increase this by at least 10% every year. The
membership is open to anyone interested and connected with
plastics, Natural and synthetic high polymers and related materials.
The membership consists of several categories as under:

DONOR, PATRON, LIFE, ORDINARY, STUDENT AND


PROFESSIONAL MEMBER
Facilities are provided to IPI Members with qualification and
Experience for upgrading their Memberships to Professional Member
(MIPI) and Fellow Member (FIPI), and more and more employers
recognize this as showing professional competence.

IPI members have also an opportunity of getting affiliated with


Institute of Materials, London and based on their qualification,
experience and contribution to the plastic industry, can get follow
grades of IOM membership :

AMIM : Associate Members of Institute of Materials
MIM : Member of Institute of Materials
FlM : Fellow of Institute of Materials

The ordinary & student members can also upgrade their IOM
Membership status.
IOM has arrangements with Engineering Council. U. K. for members
to get registered with Engineering Council, as Chartered Engineers,
Incorporated Engineer and Engineering Technician.

1.4 Activities and Plans:

The major activities of IPI are aimed to spread knowledge, improve


professional status and build up trained manpower for the plastics
industry, IPI as a part of its major objectives devotes considerable
resources on conducting the following activities at its various
Chapters.

Symposia / Seminars - National and international.


Lectures on various subjects by experts from all over the world.
Workshop on specific subjects.
Brainstorming session on newer developments & opportunities.
Visits to Industries, Laboratories & Research Institutes
Visits to National & International fairs & Exhibitions.
Training Programmes & Educational Courses, both short & long
term.

IPI has a very ambitious programme for manpower development


so as to fulfill the ever-increasing need of the fast growing plastics
industry. To further its objectives IPI is working hand in hand with
many organizations and institutions having common cause both in
India and Abroad.

2 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

2.1 Introduction :

As a part of its education, training and manpower development


programmes, IPI has evolved an education course leading to
Diploma of Indian Plastics Institute (DIPI). This course was
introduced in June1987 and the first examination of this course was
conducted in June1988. IPI Chapters at Mumbai, Delhi. Madras,
Mysore and Coimbatore have been conducting this course.

This diploma course is specially designed to meet the requirements
of Indian Plastics Industry. This course is very much different from
the DPRI Course conducted earlier by the Plastics and Rubber
Institute London. However, it is somewhat in line with the LPRI
Course of PRJ London. This course is designed to cater to the needs
of technical manpower at supervisory levels of fast growing plastics
industry.

In order that people working in the Plastic Industry can avail of an


opportunity of upgrading I improving their technical managerial skills,
this course is organised on part time basis The institute proposes
conduct this course at all the Chapters to meet trained manpower
requirement of the Plastic Industry in different parts of the country.

2.2 Programme objectives:

The educational programme is organised to impart and /or improve


technical skills of in service personnel working in the Plastics
Industry and also for those who have undergone the general
educational programmes of various Institutes/Universities etc. and
are interested in obtaining specialised knowledge of plastics to
pursue their career in the plastics industry. This programme will also
be ideally suited for aspiring entrepreneurs in plastics filed.

The participants will be trained for understanding of

Plastics materials, their properties, applications. and limitations.


Manufacture of plastic raw materials and end products.
Polymer additives and compounding.
Processing equipments, tooling and processing techniques.
Plastic Products design.
Mould / Die Design and Fabrication.
Testing & Evaluation of Plastics materials & end products.
Industrial Management.

2.3 Benefits of Programme:

3 THE COURSES

3.1 Duration & Contents of Diploma Course:


The DIPI Course will comprise of theory and practical sessions
with approximate hours of teaching as follows.
Theory : 180 hours
Practical & assignment : 180hours

3.2 Duration & Contents of Diploma Course:

The Certificate Course will comprise of theory sessions &


practical hours of duration as mentioned in the syllabus.
However curriculum stipulates the required assignment to be
completed.

3.3 Completion of the Courses :


The minimum duration required for the completion of the
Courses will be 1year. Since these Courses are meant for
persons working in the industry, the participants will have an
option of pursuing the courses by clearing papers part by part
instead of clearing all the papers at one sitting. However all the
four papers will have to be cleared in a maximum time span of
3 years. This time limit will be effective from the date of
enrollment of the candidate for the course.

4 ADMISSION
4.1 Eligibility and selection criteria :
a. Applications for admission must be made in the
prescribed form and must be accompanied by true
copies of certificates and other documentary
evidence/testimonials called for therein.
b. Incomplete and /or late applications received will be
rejected and decision of the Chapter Education
Committee shall be final with regard to the acceptance or
rejection of the applications.
c. The selections of candidates for the courses will be
strictly as per merit. based on the percentage of the
marks obtained at the qualifying examination, industrial I
professional experience possessed and so also personal
interviews held by the Chapters. The decision of the IPI
Chapters regarding admission will be treated as final.
d. Applicants having experience in plastics industry and
those who are sponsored by the industry will be given
preference for admission.
e. The applicants must meet the requirements specified
under item No. 5 to obtain admission to the Courses.
f. Candidates seeking admission to the Courses should
necessarily be, a member of IPI.
g. The minimum and maximum number of candidates that
will be admitted, each time will be decided by the
Chapters running the Courses.
h. On selection for admission, candidates will be required to
pay the full tuition fee, IPI Membership fee, and other
fees stipulated by IPI from time to time. Fees once paid
will not be refunded under any circumstances.
i. The Chapter Education Committee reserves the right to
refuse or cancel the admission of any candidate and their
decision shall be final in this respect.
j. Candidates undergoing IPI Courses should observe the
rules and regulations of the Institute. Otherwise they will
be liable for disciplinary action.

5 MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR
ADMISSION
5.1 The candidates seeking admission to DIPI & Certificate
Courses, should meet any one of the following requirements:-

6 TERM CERTIFICATION.

6.1 The scheme of instructions and examinations for DIPI


Course and Certificate Courses have been furnished
separately in the Syllabus.

6.2 The minimum duration of the Courses will be 1year.


Chapters running the Courses will ensure the completion of
the Course requirements as per curriculum within the time
span specified

6.3 Candidates will be required to put in minimum attendance of


70 percent each in theory and practical classes. They also
would be required to complete their term work in full, in a
satisfactory manner as accepted and certified by the
Chapters and approved by the moderators appointed from
time to time for the evaluation of the term work prescribed
under different subjects. Also passed in the midterm
examination.

6.4 Only those candidates who comply w1th requirements


under para 6.3 will be entitled for grant of their terms and
subsequent entry to the examination.

6.5 Candidates whose terms are not certified in particular


subject due to non-compliance of term grant requirements
will be declared as defaulter for that subject and will be
disallowed from appearing at examination in that paper.
Such candidates will have to repeat a fresh term in that
subject and get their terms granted.

6.6 The decision pertaining to granting or non -granting of the


term shall be with the concerned Chapter.

7 EXAMINATION

7.1 Eligibility, Evaluation and Certification.


a. IPI will conduct examinations every year on all India basis in the
month of June in all the subjects, for both the courses.
b. The chapters will conduct the midterm examinations after
completion of each subjects and will inform the dates.

7.2 Candidates whose terms have been certified in all the subjects
will be permitted to appear for all papers in one sitting as
follows:
a. Paper I : Polymer Science & Technology
b. Paper II : Processing of Plastics
c. Paper Ill : Product Design & Design of Moulds and Dies
d. Paper IV : Industrial Management

7.3 Candidates however, will have an option of clearing papers


part by part at a time.Those who opt to clear the Course in this
manner will have to complete the Course in a stipulated time
limit of 3 years

7.4 Candidates, who are unable to complete the course in the


stipulated time limit, will be required to under go the entire
course once again from the following year ( 4th year) and get
fresh terms granted.

7.5 Those candidates who are unable to complete the course in


the stipulated period and are desirous of pursuing the course
later on with a gap will be requ1red to seek re-admission.

7.6 All candidates whose terms have been granted are eligible to
appear for the examinations. Such candidates will have to
register for the examination by applying in the prescribed from
and paying the requisite examination fees. The examination
fee payable per paper is Rs. 250/-. Candidates opting to clear
papers part by part. however, will have to pay a minimum
examination fee of Rs.500/- irrespective of the number of
papers they are appearing. The examination fees are lible to
be revised from time to time at the discretion of the Governing
Council.

7.7 Examination fees once paid will not be refunded under any
circumstances and also will not be carried forward and
adjusted against any subsequent/future examinations for
which the candidate may opt to appear.

7.8 Instead of awarding marks, Grading System furnished as


under will be employed for evaluation.

7.9 Average grade point of 2 is required for minimum passing.


Those who get Grade Point of 1in any individual subject will be
given another opportunity to appear in the same subject next
year only once. Otherwise the entire course will have to be
repeated.

7.10 Students, however, will have option of appearing for


examination in one sitting for all papers or in parts for one or
more papers thus clearing all the papers within a maximum
span of 3 years. Those opting to appear for the papers in
parts, however will not be eligible for class or awards.

7.11 Candidates who secure a grade point of 2 will be declared to


have passed the course in Second Class. Those who secure
grade point of 3 will be declared to have passed in the Course
in First Class. Candidates securing grade point of 4 will be
placed under distinction.

7.12 The candidate who obtains distinction and stands top in the
examinations will be given a certificate of merit and an award
as decided by the Governing Council from time to time.

7.13 Candidates falling in the following categories will not be


eligible for any class or award.

a. Term work defaulter.
b. Failing to complete the course in the stipulated time limit.
c. Taking more than one attempt for passing in all the papers

7.14 All cases pertaining to passing of failing a candidate will be


decided by the examiners and the moderator and their
decision will be final and binding.

7.15 Candidates indulging in misbehaviour and /or unfair practices


during the examinations will be liable for disciplinary action.
They also will be disallowed from appearing in the subsequent
papers.

7.16 All cases of misbehaviour and / or unfair practices in the


examinations will be documented and will be referred to a
committee by Governing Council. This committee will be
decide upon the quantum of punishment which may amount to
cancellation of the results or debarring the concerned
candidate from appearing for the Institute's examinations for a
period up to 2 years or even on a permanent basis. The
decision of the Governing Council will be final and binding.

7.17 Candidates, who are declared as having passed the Diploma


examination, will be issued with the final qualifying certificate.
"DIPLOMA OF INDIAN PLASTICS INSTITUTE" and they will
be permitted to use the qualifying title DIPI against their
names. However, for retaining the qualifying title, candidates
will be expected to continue their membership with IPI.

7.18 Candidates opting to take Certificate course of the subject(s)


declared passed will be issued a certificate qualifying the
subject(s).

7.19 Candidates, who have qualified in the course, will be issued


with mark sheet (indicating grade points) along with the
passing Certificate.

7.20 lPI will not entertain any request from candidates for
revaluation of their answer papers. The results once finalized,
approved and published by IPI will be final and binding.

8 FEES
Fees for the Course prevailing at present are as following :

9 PRIZES AND AWARDS

Candidates opting to give examination in one sitting, obtain


grades and stand on top in the examination will be given a
certificate of merit and an award.

Successful candidates of the Diploma Programme are entitled


to use the designatory letters, "DIPI" as long as they continue
their association with IPl. Furthermore, they are expected to
pay the membership fees fixed by the Institute for DIPI status.

10 RECOGNITION OF THE COURSES


Indian Plastics Institute has past experience of conducting
Diploma and Licentiate Examination of The Plastics and
Rubber Institute, London, IPI has been conducting these
courses since 1969. IPI educational programmes have already
earned reputation and recognition in professionals and
industry circles; Govt. recognition however has not yet been
obtained due to various constraints.

12 METHODOLOGY

The Courses will be conducted by various Chapters of the


institute using the following methodology:

Formal teaching through lectures, discussions, drawings,


Case Studies, etc.

Practical sessions covering the various aspects of the


curriculum.

Seminar Presentations.

Factory visit

Symposia and specialised training programmes.

Since this course is designed for persons working in the


industry. The tutorial and practical classes will be organised by
the chapters.

Chapters at their discretion and convenience would ensure the


completion of courses by adopting timings suitable to their
areas. Chapters will ensure minimum attendance of 70percem
in the tutorials in order to effectively impart training to the
participants.

Faculty for the course will comprise of competent staff from


technical Institutions of repute as well as professionals and
experts from industries
