Disciples Women’s Ministry
The 2007-2008 Disciples Women’s Board met on June 10th for the last time. It was time to close the book on this year of service, tie up all the loose ends, congratulate ourselves on a job well done, and lay a foundation for the next year’s board. It was a bittersweet meeting in some ways, but of course, most of those leaving the board already have new jobs waiting elsewhere in this very busy church. To those who follow, we pray this journey will be a rewarding one, and that God will bless their endeavors. One of the greatest joys of any service is to know that what you have accomplished has mattered to someone, and made a difference in their lives. This year’s board was privileged to select seven organizations that will benefit from our financial assistance. Your support of the DWF activities has made this possible, and we thank you; please know you share in this joy. We were able to donate $1000 each to the following projects: Project Impact Kid’s for Kids Eastmont Community Center All Peoples Christian Center Clinica Esperanza

Information on these organizations can be found in websites online. You will be amazed and humbled at what is being accomplished. We were also able to donate $500 each to: FCC Vacation Bible School To support kids as they grow in their faith. To insure there will be funds for next year’s giving, plans are already in the works for the 2008 Boutique. Workshop Chair Dorie Hernandez announced the boutique craft workshops will be held on: July 13 August 17

Workshops are held in Sippel Hall following 2nd service, so be sure to mark your calendars now. You don’t need to be “crafty” and super talented – just willing to have fun. Obviously, some glue-gunning and glitter will probably be involved! Be sure to see Dorie if you have any questions or suggestions. More information to follow. Our first luncheon of the 2008-2009 year will be held on July 27th, and our new Program Chair Sakura Koontz promises it will be a great one. Check out the next Newsletter for details. And so, the torch will be passed (or at least the gavel!) on June 22, with the installation luncheon at Noon in Sippel Hall. We welcome each woman as a Disciples Woman, and we hope to see you all there, and at the activities in the coming year. “Here we go again!”

Thank you for the Gift of Music
Earlier this year Doris Wilson donated a beautiful upright piano to the church which landed in the choir room. The choir and Ken are grateful for the wonderful gift. With love from, The Choir

Endowment Fund
We want to express our sympathy and our sorrow to Andrea Whobrey. As you know Andrea is one of the directors of the Endowment Fund and we want her to know that we are thinking of her and will keep her and her family in our prayers. May God continue to watch over you and your family.

A Big Thank you to Dave Marvin who came out on his lunch hour to replace the burned out lights in our gym. We really appreciate it!

Dear Church Family,
Dad and I would like to give our heartfelt thanks, on behalf of the rest of our family, to all of you for the thoughtful cards, phone calls, gifts of food, and prayers on the recent passing of my mother, Ginny Schnepp. The memorial service was beautiful, from the special music so lovingly presented by Ken and Janet, to the reception provided by the Circle of Caring. Special thanks to Pastor Ted for his warmth and guidance through this difficult time, and for his beautiful words during the memorial service and graveside service. In Christ’s love, Andrea Whobrey and Bob Schnepp, and family

To My Church Family,
Thank you for being my Church Family . Mabel and I have attended this church since Engracia days “off & on”. Two of our three children have been married here. Last August Mabel fell against me and I couldn’t hold her but I fell on my back in the driveway. I saved her but broke my hip. 12 days in the hospital. On the 23rd day I was living alone and driving but I could not care for Mabel so she is in a “home” looking at a blank wall trying to figure a way to escape in a wheelchair. I found and needed a church home. Thanks for inviting me in. Sincerely, Paul M. Crossman

I want to Thank each and everyone of you for your Prayers. My husband Greg is doing O.K.. He had his Treadmill stress test last Friday (June 13th) and is waiting on further testing. Please continue to pray for him as we do not want to see him go through any more surgeries. Dorie Hernandez

Hilda Coleman’s brother-in-law had a heart attack and died in Alabama. Please keep sister Doris Steele in your prayers. Gene Brummett is at Kaiser Hospital with viral pneumonia. Duane Johnson had surgery in Iowa and will be back home as soon as he is strong enough. Michele Wood will be having sinus surgery this week. Please keep Lee Sebaugh and his brother Allen in your prayers. Suzanne Nelson’s father Lee Ray fell and is in the hospital. Also her son Kurt is on his 3rd term in Iraq.

Our first staff meeting is Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. (note the time change) We invite everyone who is involved to come as we continue our planning for one of the biggest Outreach opportunities for our church. If you have any questions just give me a call at 310 650-0950 or Jill Foster our new Education chair at 310 378-4981. Also don’t forget to mark your calendars for our fundraisers the California Pizza Kitchen night June 30, and our BBQ on the church lawn on July 30, right after 2nd worship. Tickets will be on sale for the BBQ on June 29 after both services. VBS Director, Chery Carew

Youth Adventure
Youth Adventure will begin meeting again in July-the dates we will meet are Sunday, July 13 after second service and Sunday, July 27 after second service in Room 3. I will have a light lunch for the children. We will enjoy a short discussion, play some games and learn more about each other. Our first meeting will be more to plan some activities and to find out what our youth would like to do. Parents are welcomed to join us for our first meeting, but not required. Youth Adventure is for all children entering 3rd grade in September through 5th grade. I hope to see all of your children participating and learning more about church life. If you have any questions, please give me a call at 310-328-8399. Blessings, Shirley Woodman

Update: Ruby’s FUNdraiser
The Education Committee would like to thank everybody who attended the Ruby’s FUNdrasier. Our cravings for yummy shakes, thick malts and juicy burgers helped us raise $165.00 towards VBS! Thank you for supporting one of our biggest events.

Summer is here and it’s time for MOVIES ON THE LAWN! Bring your lawn chair and your blanket and join us for two fun nights of fellowship and movie watching out on the lawn. Movies will be shown on Monday, July 7th and Monday, August 18th starting at 8:00 p.m. You bring a friend and we’ll bring the popcorn. See Jill Foster if you have any questions.

We want you to know that over the summer the church is host to three churches in our region for Mission work. First Christian Church in Lubbock, Texas, First Congregational Church of Berkley and Pilgrim Christian Church in Carlsbad. These groups are mostly high school and college age kids that come with about four to five adult sponsors, who happen to be Youth Pastors and or parents. They leave the church by 9:00 a.m. every morning and travel to All Peoples Christian Center in downtown Los Angeles doing the various tasks that need to be done. They come back to the church around 5:00 p.m. and have dinner, fellowship and recreation. They want to say “Thank You” for providing such a wonderful and beautiful church facility that has all the comforts of home. Bonnie Evans is planning a trip to Texas and is asking if anyone in the congregation might have a wheelchair (light weight would be super, not imperative) she could borrow during her time away. The chair also must have foot rests and good brakes! If you have any ideas or can help, give a call to Linda Houston: 329-6444. Bonnie our “bodacious bowler” thanks you in advance for your help!

Dear Church Family,
Words can not express how overwhelmed we are by your warm and enthusiastic welcome. From the “Welcome Home” sign the young people made and put on our gate, to the incredible gift baskets placed in the parsonage, and all the generous gift cards, to the thorough “pounding” we got on our first Sunday, you have helped us feel so blessed, so at home. Thanks also to the children who received our granddaughter Sydney, who will be visiting from Las Vegas off and on through the summer—she already feels like she has a number of new church friends. And of course, even beyond all the tangible tokens, we have all the more appreciated your words of encouragement and your prayers on our behalf. It has meant so much! We look forward to knowing you more and more, and to serving alongside you in the mission God has given us all. Gratefully yours in Christ, Steve & Janie Fietz, and Sydney Thornton

Upcoming Sermons:
June 22—“The Prodigal Father” (Luke 15:11—32) Jesus’ life is often called “The greatest story ever told.” Perhaps the greatest story he ever told says much about God’s immeasurable grace and love for us—all of us. June 29—“Happy Anniversary, Baby” (Colossians 3:12—17) Human love is a wonderful gift, especially when it is pledged in a living covenant—and all our deepest covenants are grounded in the worship of God. July 6—“A More Perfected Union” (Ephesians 4:11—16) God accepts us as we are, with every imperfection—but God also wants us to grow and mature, both as individuals and as community, towards wholeness and completion. July 13—“The Best Mileage You’ll Ever Get” (Micah 6:6—8) While our culture is caught up in the spiraling cost of driving, what might it mean for us to humbly walk with God?
Page 10

“I thank God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy.” (Philippians 1:3—4) Wow! No, wait—I mean wwwwwooooooooOOOOOOOWWWWWWW!!! (For details on this sentiment, see the letter on page 10) So—we’ll be getting to know one another better over the coming days, weeks, years. First of all, you should know that there are two kinds of preachers: those who pun, and those who do not. I, alas and hurrah, being a preacher of habit, do. Pun and games, way too much. Second, some folks wonder what they should call a minister. When she wants something, Janie calls me Steven. Otherwise, I go by Steve. If you are more comfortable using a title, Pastor Steve is just fine. But on to the practical—my schedule: generally, I will be available in the office from 9—noon, Monday through Thursday. I will be in many afternoons as well, but will also be using that time for visitation. Please feel encouraged to stop by, or to phone and set up an evening visit. I will be taking Fridays off, and Saturdays when there are no church commitments. I will of course be on call for emergencies—our home phone and my email are below, and Camelia will have info for reaching me in emergencies, as will Board and Elder chairs, Doug Crawford and Jeff Wood. Janie and I are so excited to be here—and in the end, all thanks is to God for bringing us together! Shalom, Steve Home Phone: 310-212-5950 Email:

Lauren Eldik, the daughter of Janie and Steve Fietz, has been diagnosed with highrisk factors in her pregnancy. As Lauren's husband, Mosbeh, is a civilian contractor in Iraq, Janie will be staying with Lauren in Las Vegas for much of her remaining term. The baby in due September 12. (Lauren is the aunt of the Fietzes' granddaughter, Sydney; Sydney's mother is Lauren's older sister, Kendall.)
**Next Newsletter articles need to be at the church office by 7/7/08.
