Introduction The BBC is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world. The BBC is run in the interests of its viewers and listeners. It is a public service broadcaster, established by a Royal Charter and funded by the licence fee that is paid by UK households. The BBC uses the income from the licence fee to provide services including 8 national TV channels plus regional programming, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations and an extensive website, bbc.co.uk. Furthermore, BBC World Service broadcasts to the world on radio, on TV and online, providing news and information in 32 languages. It is funded by a government grant, not from the licence fee. In addition, it has a commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, which operates a range of businesses including selling programmes around the world and publishing books, DVDs and merchandise. Its profits are returned to the BBC for investment in new programming and services. Finally, the BBC is governed by the BBC Trust, which represents the interests of licence fee payers and sets the overall strategy. The Trust's Chairman is Sir Michael Lyons.
Market BBC, which stands for British Broadcasting Corporation, is the world’s biggest broadcasting network. BBC takes pride in being the largest news channel in the world. According to their web site, their mission is to “enrich people's lives with programs that inform, educate and entertain.” BBC.com is only one division of the multimedia options the company offers. Other branches include television, and radio. Operating under nicknames such as “Auntie” and “The Beeb”, BBC.com has a fairly large target market. It is a news website which claims to be "Europe's most popular content based site”. They target people consumers in the Media & Entertainment industry at almost any age, and at any level of income. The internet, being a new media and popular with Generations X and Y, targets a younger market. However, younger kids are not always interested in global affairs, and news, therefore I would say the target market is ages 15+.
Main Players This international website has few players that are big enough to pose a competitive threat. Their biggest competition is CNN.com. According to Alexa’s Top 500 websites, based on the traffic count, lists BBC.com at #48. CNN.com follows right behind at #49, and then further down the line at #91 is NYtimes.com.
Development BBC.com has a few values and goals in mind. Their vision/goal is “to be the most creative organization in the world.” They continue to expand their horizons with additions such as BBC games, and a new system called iPlayer. Radio and television can also be viewed on BBC.com, but only for a limited amount of time. Inside the UK, this broadcasting site is advertisement free, which adds to its appeal. In terms of the future BBC.com hopes to become a more well rounded website. They are trying to change the way they provide information. They will redirect users to web pages and sites already containing the information that they seek rather than import the information for them.
Background The British Broadcasting Company, as the BBC was originally called, was formed in October 1922 by a group of leading wireless manufacturers including the great radio pioneer, Guglielmo Marconi. Daily broadcasting by the BBC began from Marconi’s London studio on November 14. This was followed the next day by broadcasts from Birmingham and Manchester, and over the following months the transmitter network spread across the UK. Wireless quickly caught on as a medium of mass communication. By 1925 the BBC could be heard throughout most of the UK. Within a year BBC had broadcast plays, concerts of popular and classical music, talks and variety programs from its first home in Savoy Hill. But the powerful newspaper industry successfully kept the BBC out of the news business. Bulletins were prepared by the news agencies, and could only be broadcast after 7 pm. so as not to upset newspaper sales. In 1932, it moved into the world’s first purpose- built radio production centre, Broadcasting House, in Portland Place. It quickly became a city landmark and was described as “a new Tower of London”. The 1960’s brought more up-to-date content that reflected the times and the expectations of audiences whose appetite had been whetted by the choice offered by the ITV. In 1970’s, the BBC addressed its educational remit, as well as entertaining and informing. This decade saw the launch of the ‘University of the Airwaves’, the BBC’s collaboration with the Open University. 1980’s was a challenging decade for BBC correspondents who reported in depth on dramatic and often dangerous events from Northern Ireland, Tiananmen Square, the Soviet Union and the Eastern Europe. BBC online, an Internet service which did not exist at the beginning of the 90s, was of the leading websites in Europe by the end of 1999. The BBC opened the new millennium with the most ambitious program in its history. Hundreds of outside broadcasts across the globe fed into BBC Television centre, and a continuous program lasting 28 hours was beamed back to viewers around the world. The show involved 60 nations, and was seen in over 80 countries worldwide.

Promotion of BBC BBC World Service broadcasts to the world on radio, on TV and online, providing news and information in 32 languages. Every world service corporation like BBC must have in this time, a magnificent website that informs the audience for the latest and best information, and current news. Must be flexible, have effective format, offers to the audience a sense of ensure, have a clear and strong detailed programs, a good graphic animating, correct size of window and colors that attracts the potential visitors. It’s necessary the website to help visitors to learn what happens in China, Australia and other countries, which team wins in final of champion’s league, the weather of each country, and what will happen in the next episodes of their favorite TV shows only with a click of his mouse. But except from all that, the dominant theme on all network website is programming.
BBC Swot Analysis BBC was the power force for 20century and it hopes to continue being also for the 21century. BBC has a top level website that includes many kinds of information. From the site we can inform for the latest and best information, current news well ascertained from reliable journalist from entire world (economic, business, science, entertainment). Also, visitors can learn about programs, watch promos, trailer from favorite TV series, click boxes that allow users enter to a contest or read the special reports, read about the new entries in technology and historical information of each country for demanding visitors and link to entertainment, lifestyle, games, sports (the best goal in football). Users can enjoy the high quality of services that offer the website like the continuous briefing of weather, live news, music and for the younger target group the BBC 3 (TV schedule, free wallpapers, program, vote), live arena Radio 1 and 1Xtra and all of that available in 32 languages!!! Furthermore website, gives you a ensure connection, is flexible and easy to use. Whatever you want, you find in 5 seconds and that happens because BBC is the only broadcasting corporation which financed by a TV license paid by the households, and therefore does not serve the interest of advertisers. This means that it can focus on providing high quality programmes and services for everyone. Unfortunately, website have also and weaknesses. Many visitors have special demands about site or specific reports and the team of BBC delay to answer in these questions. That creates problem in BBC because, someone can say that they have very bad communication with the visitors and the next time to pick CNN or NBC for their briefing. Another problem for BBC is the resemblance / likeness with other sites like CNN, because offers almost the same package of services, information and same web
design. The manager’s of BBC website must find way to be different from NBC, CNN, FOX e.t.c. Also, must provide the analysis of and traffic measurement to BBC website. Improve the way it reports web traffic and the options by which measures visitors to the whole of the site. The opportunities for website are the right choices that will take managers for new and more innovative services, different from other broadcast networks. Even mobile technologies can offer more opportunities, every person who has mobile can use internet and surf at BBC WEBSITE any time want! Website can be also more attractive for the visitors with better design, more intense colors, interest’s boxes with interest series, information, glamour! The treats are the competition from other international culture competitors with the same or higher services and more exclusive information, news, stability and website bad connection.
Promotion There different ways to promote a site… First, they must getting feedback, information’s from viewers, then look if they want to learn about the latest news for the website, like gossips, promotional programs and products, contests, program reminders. If they want, then you send with e-mail or sms whatever new exists in the website and with e-newsletters send the monthly news about economics, business, lifestyle, new games for the children’s. Always informative!! Other way is to use links in many relative sites with BBC (children’s sites, lifestyle sites, economic sites, business sites), or links that gives to visitor the chance to explore inside the website of BBC. Example, somebody is read the news and then
wants to go to sports, with a click in the link, transferred in the section he/she wants without problem! Also, many programs like BBC series have their own sites that we can put a link with same interest subject or relative, so users have the opportunity to visit the regular website. The same we can do with banners. With videos everyone can watch daily news, latest news from stars, business, new series trailers. Most of the users prefers this way because they have the chance, in the same time to watch, hear (sound, picture) something they consider interest for them. Outdoor advertising and advertising in a magazine is most difficult because you must write the most popular section of the portal in 1 page mention the internet address below with intense colorful, big letters without you lose reliable and respect for the network. It’s useful advertising because many people still read magazines, newspapers and see the posters on the road. Contests and chat are also good way to promote the website because always people will interest for gifts and always will try to win! If a portal has a very interested contest then many users will visit the website for declare attendance! With chat and forums you can communication with users, listen their problems or what they likes them in relation with website and then improve it. Too, you can give in new users the website address, promise incredible contests and reliable information about everything and with that way to increase your visits! The most important thing though is to keep the visitors and users as long as time inside the website. Must visitor/ user to explore all BBC website without problem and keep them satisfied!
