Resolving Conflict

To resolve conflict, these steps are very useful

1. All Parties have to show up and be heard in full but not allowed to dominate the discussion.

Answer: The school head send an invitation letter to both parties to visit her office on a specified date
and time to settle the conflict. During the face to face confrontation, the school head will give an
instruction that no one will dominate the discussion. One must wait for their turn to air their respective
sentiments.

2. All sides need to listen without breaking in.

Answer: Before the confrontation, the school head will caution the opposing parties to listen to one
another and should have to control their respective emotions to avoid breaking in.

3. There may be many elements and contributing factors .This must all be identified and separated
out. This is especially true when there are past insults, multiple parties associated with the
conflict, and complicated circumstances.

Answer: During the confrontation, the school head will ask each party if they have a previous conflict, or
any misunderstanding.

4. Especially important is to clarify the various emotions being held by the parties and to identify
how these emotions evolved to their present form.
At first, I was hurt but then I got angry and outraged.

Answer: The school head will ask and clarify how they felt for each other.

Who told you that Mrs. X is the one who informed me that you were absent yesterday?

5. All the different parties assumptions must be identified and clarified.


I thought you hated me, I thought you were aligned with so and so.

Answer: The school head will ask Mrs. Y what is her assessment to Mrs. X perdonality.

I thought you were the eyes and ears of our school head.

I thought you are envy with me because of my promotion.

6. The main barriers and obstacle to resolution must be identified and clarified.
We dont negotiate until the jobs are reinstated.

Answer: The conflict will not be solved if you will keep on blaming people without valid evidence.
7. Scenario building. Everyone must contribute possible solutions and clarify where this solution is
likely to lead.
There should also be a scenario for failed negotiations. . What will happen if we fail?

Answer: The school head will solicit both parties for possible solutions to end up the conflict.

8. The next step is to begin agreeing on some strategy that takes the best of the scenarios posted.

Answer: Now we will come to an agreement on what will you do so that a conflict like this or similar
to this will not crop up again in the future?

9. The next step is negotiation and compromise. Of utmost importance is to have everyone in
attendance at the table who can do something about the problem. Peace process often
breakdown because the people present cannot enforce the solution strategy.

10. Put all agreements in written contract with agreed upon consequences if the agreement is
violated.

Answer: The school head will suggest that the agreement will be put into writing and make
corresponding disciplinary actions once the agreement is violated.
