Candidate. Although our understanding of mental health and addiction has greatly expanded through the
years, there still exists a stigma surrounding these diseases. Many people still have misconceptions about the
condition. One of the factors that adds to the negative perception of someone struggling with mental health
and addiction is the language that people use to discuss it. Words can be a powerful influencer. By changing
the vocabulary that we use when discussing mental health and addiction, we can help to reduce the negative
stigma and see it as a condition that needs effective treatment and management.

Litoi, the man in the maze

The story of Litoi is also the story of every human being,

traveling life as through a maze, taking many turns while growing
stronger and wiser as life continues until the end at the dark center of the maze.
Tracing the light path with your finger you will find one more turn at the end, away from
the center. Here we can look back on the trail and find acceptance of the last step.

Hope and Recovery

We believe that people CAN recover from even the most serious and persistent
mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, major depression, or bipolar
disorder. Studies suggest that individuals recovery or significantly improve when
provided the appropriate treatments and supports systems. Over the past 30
years, an unwavering effort to use more effective and lower cost alternatives to
long-term institutionalization led to psychiatric rehabilitation services.

Mental Health First Aid Youth Curriculum is designed to

help people recognize the signs and symptoms of mental
illness, fight stigma associated with mental illness, and
address the real desire to help someone who is struggling.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid 8 hour course is designed:

To teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and
human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is
experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or who may be in crisis.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.
The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent
development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-
crisis situations.
Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur,
disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
