NASOGASTRIC TUBE

 An upper GI source

o Is signaled by the presence of bright-red blood or

o Coffee-ground material

o Bright red blood means active bleeding

o Coffee ground material is blood altered by gastric acid

 In the presence of active GI bleeding

o The stomach should be lavaged

o Room temperature tap water is adequate for this purpose

o The use of iced saline or water is unecessary
