Prompt #1

The shed flew open last night, letting all the dirt and dust in. I scraped across the dry dirt

that covered the ground. When I got to the shed everything was dusted, all the meat we had

been storing was disgusting. I started dusting off the shelves, seeing me on it, “Ghram” I

remember when I was finally tall enough to reach the shelf, I carved my name in it...That was

when things seemed to be much simpler. I can’t remember when I actually had a peaceful

night's sleep. I looked at the meat. Animals got to it. I grabbed the dead hanging deer carcase

and started cutting away the bitten parts, when I heard savage scream. “Shit” she’s up. I threw

my things down making sure I locked up the shed. I ran back to the house almost tripping.

“Where am I!”, I sighed “Please calm down your home, this is your home now.” I hated having to

talk her down almost every morning, “Who are you! Get away from me!” I tuned out thinking how

easy it would be to just get rid of her, I couldn’t. “I’m Ghram remember, I’m taking care of you,

please.” She sat down confused mumbling to herself whispering different names. That will last a

while, I grabbed a towel with dried meat in it and threw it to her, “Eat.” I walked out of the room

to the kitchen. We’ve been at this house for too long, we’re gonna need to move soon. I reached

the door, so I could go back and finish cutting the meat. “Help, someone help me!” I darted for

the stairs and into the room, What is she doing, I yanked her back into the room, and shut the

window. “You can’t do that.” I said almost losing my breath, I grabbed my knee, I hit it on the

way up. “You can’t keep me here I have rights!” I paused, I hated going through this, “Not

anymore, please I’m trying to help you. You don’t have to like me, I just want to help you okay

so please!” She stopped and went back to the floor and sat there, “Okay” I went back

downstairs and headed outside, the meat would have to wait. I walked out of the fence into the

small patch of forest, looking in the different traps Then was the sirens. I ran to my nearest dung

out closest to the house. They’re coming. The car road down the street side blearing it’s sirens
hurting my ears. We should have left a long time ago, I got too comfortable now I had to try and

deal with what came next. I snuck to the shed, unlocking it and grabbing my bags and stuffing

the meat, that could fit. I ran to the back door, slowly opening it. They were on their way, more

than 6 this time, they heard her scream. I ran up the steps. “Alice, let's go come on, now.” I

whispered, she stayed in the corner I tried to drag her, “GET OFF ME!” she wasn’t gonna move,

I looked out the window. They heard her. I looked at her one last time, “It’s for the best.” I jetted

down the stairs and through the back as they busted through the front. I kept going I didn’t look

back. Single Shot.

Prompt #2

Disgusting. I forgot to lock the shed last night, the animals got in. The meat in the shed is

either completely mangled or half eaten. I started dusting off the shelves. I can’t remember

when I actually had a peaceful night's sleep. I looked at the meat. Animals got to it. I grabbed

the dead hanging deer carcase and started cutting away the bitten parts, when I heard savage

scream.

“Shit.” she’s up. I threw my things down, annoyed making sure I locked up the shed. I

ran back to the house almost tripping.

“Where am I!,” she looked around frantically I sighed “Please calm down I’m not trying to

her you, this is your home now.” I hated having to talk Alice down almost every morning, “Who

are you! Get away from me, you’re one of them!” I tuned out getting agitated, I didn’t sign up to

be her caretaker.

“I’m Ghram remember, I’m taking care of you, please.” She sat down confused

mumbling to herself whispering different names. That will last a while, I grabbed a towel with
dried meat in it and threw it at her, “Eat.” I walked out of the room to the kitchen. We’ve been at

this house for too long, we’re gonna need to move soon. I reached the door, so I could go back

and finish cutting the meat, my fingers traced the door knob. “Help, someone help me!” An

alarm went off in my head, and I darted for the stairs and into the room, What is she doing, I

yanked her back into the room, and shut the window. “You can’t do that.” I said almost losing my

breath, I grabbed my knee, I hit it on the way up. “You can’t keep me here I have rights!” I

paused, I hated going through this, “Not anymore, please I’m trying to help you. You don’t have

to like me, I just want to help you okay so please, work with me!” She stopped and went back to

the floor and sat there, “Okay.” I brushed the loose strands of hair out of my eye. I headed

downstairs and outside, I quickly glanced at my watch, the meat would have to wait. Walking

outside the sky looked a little orange, far from a blue color, I made it to the small patch of forest,

looking in the different traps I created. Sirens began to blare, from the far end of the street, So I

grabbed my shachal and rab to my nearest dung out closest to the house. They’re coming.

The car road down the street side screeching it’s sirens hurting my ears. We should

have left a long time ago, I got too comfortable now, I had to try and deal with what came next. I

snuck to the shed, unlocking it and grabbing my bags and stuffing the meat that could fit. I ran to

the back door, slowly opening it. They were on their way, more than 6 this time, I guess to cover

more ground they heard her scream. I skipped up the steps. She locked the door, “Alice, let's go

come on, now.” I whispered. She kept the door locked. “The bad people are on there way to

take you, I want to help you...I am not one of them please.” They busted through the front as

Alice released the lock, opening the door. Falling into the room I gathered myself, grabbing the

dresser blocking it against the wall I kept going I didn’t look back. Single Shot.

Happy Birthday.
I cracked open the door peeking at a guy smiling at my doorstep, I open the door

fully letting him in. “What took you so long to open the door, I was getting old out there,”

He smiled kissing me on the cheek and entering the house. I cringed at his joked,

closing the door behind him. “Sorry...That was a really shitty joke.” I nodded and trailed

behind him walking into the kitchen. We sat there in silence for a while till Maddic broke

the silence.

“So your mom’s turning 40 tomorrow....” I looked down at the ground.

“Yeah.....I know,” I tried to get out almost skipping over my tongue.

“They sent you the notice right?”

I furrowed my brow grabbing the envelope off the counter and throwing it to him.

“This morning.” He opened it up reading it to himself, he sighed, “Maybe if you tell them

about her condition, they’ll let you keep her,” I looked at him in a disgusted way, “She’s

not some dog Mad, she’s my mother!” He looked at me agitated, “Look you’ve told me

many times before how you were tired of taking care of her, right?!” I looked out the

window admitting truth to what he said, “So this is a way you can get rid of her and not

feel guilty.” I pulled out a chair and sat down, my brain was exhausted, “When they find

out she has a disease, they won’t just haul her off to a work camp they’ll murder her!”

He walked over to me rubbing my shoulders, “Maybe it’s for the best.” I shrugged him

off my shoulders. “Wow, I honestly can’t believe you right now!” He was being so

insensitive, “Graham, If your mom can’t even be a proper member of society, then

what’s the point?! She can’t even fulfill her duty as an American and serve her time! She
should be put out of her misery!” With rage I got up and slapped him across his face,

“Get the Hell out of my house!” He grabbed his cheek in shock of what I had done and

started stomping to the door, “Gladly!” I heard a slam.

I felt like I was having a panic attack, I couldn’t believe that this was the turning

into a reality. I seen it happen to others, but I never had any true empathy until today. I

went to the key rack, sliding off a double key ring. I went up the stairs and walked to the

end of the upstairs hall, I put my hand on the door, take out the key. I unlocked the door

and stood at the entrance.

She sits in a dingy yellow chair and stares at the clock. She waits for it to change

to exactly 7:00pm and she rises. My eyes follow her around the room, waiting for her to

do the next thing. ¨Oh, no I have to go change Graham's diaper!¨ I lean on the hedge of

the door, stopping her before she exits. I let out a sigh¨Itś fine, I already took care of the

baby.¨ She backs up from the door nodding her head, walking back over to the yellow

chair. ¨Thank you! Sometimes raising a child on your own can be hard work.” She sits in

the dingy yellow chair and stares at the window, ¨My daugther Graham is so precious,

she means the world to me.” I hesitate to smile, giving off an awkward smirk, ¨Good

thing Iḿ here to help.” She looks down at her hands and then up at the clock and starts

to nod in agreement. With that I start to head out of the room almost closing the door

when she spoke, ¨Who are you again?” I traced my hand along the edge of the door

grinding my teeth a bit, “I’m just here to take care of the baby.” She nods once more

looking back out the window. I shut the door completely, digging in my back pocket for a

key and quickly and quietly, lock the door.
I reach the end of the stairs and pull out a different key, and walk towards

the hallway closet. I unlock the door and grab for the top shelf, I pull down a large

satchel and drag it into the kitchen. I rummage through the cabinet, grabbing cans and

bags of food shoving them into the bag. I start whispering to myself, staring at the

envelope on the counter, “Clothes, food, matches, water....Water!” I scurry to the fridge

packing in as much water I could fit.

If I was going to make a run for it, We had to do it tonight.
