Global Goals Report Student A, I&S Class 8B

1. INTRODUCTION
There are many things we want to achieve by 2030 so the UN decided to group these within
seventeen goals, which we now call the global goals. One of the global goals is gender equality, this
is about women being treated fairly and given a real chance. Gender equality is something the world
is working very hard on to improve. Women are seen weaker or less valuable to the world and
women want to change that. Slowly people are starting to have peace with the fact that women and
men are the same but there still a lot of people that think different about this. People might say that
they are against sexism but in reality they still think all girls are going to grow up to be a typical
mother who just cleans all day and provides food for the family. There’s is nothing wrong with being
a woman without a job and just caring for your family but there shouldn’t be anything wrong with
being a woman who works fulltime with the same job as some men. Another thing with gender
inequality is, is that women aren’t only discriminated through work but are also used for all kinds of
exploitation. Girls are used for arranged marriages, sexual harassment, physical harassment and
other things that only girls are used for. Girls and women are used for this because they seem more
fragile and easier to handle, when this does occur it is very hard to go against or to find someone
that is willing to help you. The global goal to fight against gender inequality is very necessary even
though some people might not realize. Females are being discriminated so much more than some
people think and if not everyone agrees with this fact It is very hard to fight against. If all men in the
world think it is true that women are worth less than men it is very hard to stand up against them. If
women are being discriminated to them that means they are ‘higher’ than us, it is very hard to
convince people who thinkthat they are higher than you to appreciate you more.

2. BACKGROUND ON ISSUES

2.1 Issues
Woman are seen as the weaker sex. Not only are they being discriminated through jobs and
responsibility but are also used for arranged marriages, harmful practices, trafficking and other sorts
of exploitation. First almost no one wanted to stand up for women but now there are more and
more people realizing the problems and willing to stand up. Since women started to stand up things
have changed in the world of financial businesses as swell. It has been proven that is an equal
amount of men and women working, the business is better off. Also for dangerous jobs results show
that when women started to work together with men more the workplace was safer and there were
fewer accidents after women started to involve with the business. Since 2000 the UNDP, United
nation Development Program, thought gender equality was essential to our life, after that the
results of discrimination against women has decreased dramatically. More girls are attending school,
6% more women are working than in 1990 and in sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania and western Asia girls
are allowed to study at a primary and middle school. Sadly, the issues about gender equality aren’t
only about jobs and schools but also about sexual harassment, abusive relationships and
acquaintance rape. In a lot of countries sexual harassment is an unknown problem because the
victims are too scared to talk about it. Sometimes when people don’t know the complete story of a
woman being sexually harassed they assume it’s the victims fault, this makes women rethink about
what happened and sometimes even convince their selves that it was their own fault. Fighting
against a problem that is unknown is almost impossible.

2.2 Statistics
Since 1990 women and girls are appreciated more and results over the years show us that women
are growing stronger than they ever were before. In Southern Asia in 1990 only 74 girls went to
school for every 100 boys, in 2012 there was the same amount of boys and girls going to school.
Since then more girls were allowed to also finish their middle school, although in Sub-Saharan Africa,
Oceania and Western Asia girls still get denied to participate in a middle school. Payed women have
increased 6% from 1990, now more women are working and more women are payed fairly. Also in
higher businesses women are getting more jobs, now in more than 46 countries women hold at least
30% of the seats in the parliament, in the first chamber. Sadly, now that more women are working
there is also more sexual harassment at the workplace. After researching 500 women in 92 different
company’s, results show unbelievable responses from these women. 54% ad experienced some kind
of unwanted harassment. 27% (of the 54%) were harassed by a colleague and 17 by their superior.
12% (of the 54%) women received threats if they didn’t cooperate. Child marriage means that a
person gets married who is under the age of 18, globally almost 15 million girls under the age of 18
are married each day and around the world 4.5 million women are forced into sexual exploitation.

3. GLOBAL GOAL 5

3.1 What is the goal trying to achieve?
No gender inequality is mainly thought of to empower all girls and women over the world. The
potential of girls and women aren’t taken seriously or payed attention to. Serious jobs and
responsibilities aren’t given to girls because men don’t believe that a woman could ever have the
same knowledge. Different people look to women and just see some kind of ‘toy’ that they can just
use for anything. Arranged marriages, sexual harassment and forced labour are all things that are
seen continuously over the whole world, especially with women. When an arranged marriage is
going to take place, usually the man gets to choose between different women to get married to, in
this stage women have no saying in who their partner is going to be. Without her consent she is
forced to have children and stay home to provide meals for her family. If a woman is sexually
harassed usually it is because someone has something on her. Sometimes bosses threaten to fire
them and sometimes it is something more personal, but whatever it is women just don’t see a better
way out. Forced labour is when women, children and men are forced to work and otherwise will be
punished. Especially women and children are a target for forced labour because they are built
weaker and that way easier to punish.

3.2 What sub-targets make up the Global Goal?
The targets of the global goal are the same but also very different. They all want to end all forms of
discrimination against women but the way they want to do that is different. We want to end all
sexual harassments against girls, also make sure that there are no early or forced marriages. Women
are also discriminated through work. Going through labour and not being paid, or not having the
same leadership through economic or political jobs. Responsibilities is something that is still not
given to women, the global goals want more women to have a property or natural resources. The
sub-targets basically just want to have women being treated the same as men, even though women
might seem weaker with arm wrestling that doesn’t mean that they can’t control something as good

3 | P a g e

as a man could. Just a chance to show what women really can do is what we need to prove that
women can do the same thing as men.

3.3 Related Millennium Development Goal
The seven millennium development goals were the simpler version of the global goals. These goals
were seven targets to succeed by 2015. Some of the millennium goals were kept the same to
succeed it even further and some were expanded. Just like the global goals the millennium goals
have a target to fight against gender inequality. Goal three was to promote gender equality and
empower women. The millennium goal wants to have an equal amount of girls and boys going to
primary and secondary school, the global goal has kept the same target because not all countries
allowed girls to both primary and middle school. The global goal also focuses on women trafficking
and physical violence instead of just focusing on going to school and jobs. The few years between
the global goals and the millennium goals really helped people realize that women were
discriminated in multiple ways, such like sexual harassment. The millennium goals were very
successful and let other see what should be the next targets. Without the millennium goals the
targets of the global goals would be different, if people didn’t do something about girls going to
school a few years that is what we would be focussing on now instead of other problems women are
going through.

4. TAKING ACTION
It is very hard to think of an action for gender inequality. There isn’t just a beach clean-up that you
can do, that is also why not a lot of people choose to help this. People know that gender inequality is
a problem but don’t know how to help, that is why they just choose not to help. There are some
workshops, debates and readings about this subject, so going to one of those will already help a lot.
Knowing what gender inequality really means makes it easier to think of an action that could be
helpful. Younger women should not be afraid to do jobs that are seen as masculine jobs, on the
contrary girls should choose less seen women jobs to show that women are as equal men.

4.1 What action can I take?
Instead of making a workshop or going to a conference I created a website to inform people around
me, having the information about a global goal is the first step of making a difference. There are
many different websites in the world about gender inequality so I wanted mine to be different. I
interviewed a women called Jacqui, a woman who works in a mine. A few years ago when no women
worked in the mine Jacqui joined together with other women. The reason why she did this was
because she had a degree in science minerals and recovering metals, the only job that was relevant
was mine working. Women were still discriminated very much, when she first was working at the
mine people thought she was joking. When women just started to work in the mine there wouldn’t
be toilets for both genders, calendars of naked women would be hung up everywhere and no one
did something about it. After Jacqui got married she didn’t doubt her choice to stay at all, but others
did. People around didn’t have the need to teach her anything because the all thought she would
just quite after she got married anyway, quit and start a family. When Jacqui decided to stay anyway
people started to get threatened, every time she had a good idea the men felt threatened because
she was a woman. After years of proving other wrong Jacqui now is the boss of a mine in Australia.
More women are working in the mines now, charts show that when women started working

together with the men there were less accidents and more work was done. Now women still get
treated differently than the men but they continuously prove to the others that there just as good.

4.2 Sustainability Action Week
Sustainability action week was very interesting as I got to learn more about all of the global goals.
Learning about all the different goals was very interesting because I did know some information but
there was still a lot to learn. The different stands all had unbelievable facts about the world which
made me more inspired to do something for the goals. There were a lot of people from school who
weren’t part of the sustainability action week who were still interested, more than was expected by
me. When we went to the junior campus the younger children seemed amazed from all the
information they were getting. For a few times I went to the gender equality stand to tell others
about my information but I mainly told people about sustainability week and gave them a ribbon to
represent the goal that there volunteering for. Different children though of different actions and
different children were interested in different goals. They all wanted to help and most of them got a
ribbon. ON Friday when we were presenting at our own main campus the reactions were very
different. The lower grades were interested and understood everything we told them the
information. The higher grades weren’t as interested but were still wondering what we were doing.
It was good to see everyone wanting to help for the global goals.

4.3 Measuring success
Interviewing this woman was very motivating for me because it made me realize how much it must
hurt to be discriminated. Jacqui told me a lot of things that weren’t expected. When she just started
to work in the mine she felt disrespected and went to one of her bosses to talk about it. Instead of
helping her and trying to make her feel welcome in her workplace they told her that is was a risk of
being a woman in the mine. Also reading a lot of stories of women being sexually harassed helped
me understand how bad it actually is. A lot more things happen than we realize. It is hard to do
something about it. Because not all stories are shared. Women don’t always tell the stories of them
sexually or physically abuse because some people won’t believe them or they think that it is their
own fault. There is still a big problem that women don’t talk about their feelings because they it
might be their own fault. Sexual or physical assaults are never the victims fault, as much as they
might be provoking that doesn’t give anyone any right to cross someone’s line. I would say that the
volunteer work was very successful for myself because I am a lot more interested in gender
inequality. The website is hopefully helpful for other people to get information.

4.4 Reflecting on my experiences
Firstly, it’s important to know what the global goals are so that is what I researched. I researched
about the global and millennium goals. After I knew to focus on gender inequality I just read
everything I could find. First it was just issues and things we can do to help but after words I also
looked up stories about women being discriminated and talked to my dad and mom. My mother
does volunteer work at aware, a place that cares a lot about standing up against sexual and physical
harassment. Women with problems can call this number, tell their stories and get help, because of
this my mom had a few very interesting stories. The company where my dad works they mainly
focus on having the same amount of women and men working in their business, again there were a
few facts that I didn’t know that were very interesting. Interviewing a woman who went through an

5 | P a g e

Global Goals Report Student A, I&S Class 8B

experience of being discriminated herself gave me more information. Talking to someone who went
through this helps me realize how bad it actually is.

While researching my global goal I found a lot of good and a lot of bad resources. First it was harder
to find information about this topic but afterwards the websites were helping me more. Some
websites helped me through stories and others through issues or statistics but most websites
weren’t very helpful. It was hard to find good websites but when I did the research was a lot easier.
Doing my research really helped me understand this global goal.

The next time I do this kind of research I would want to again research many different aspects of the
subject I’m researching. With this research I was interested in the economic part where women
were discriminated and also the social effects. Knowing different stories about the same topic is very
good because than you don’t only have an opinion about a part of a subject. If I were to do this
research again I would have definitely talked more to other people around me. It is very interesting
to know other people’s opinions on these kind of topics because it is a global problem. I would also
start my research earlier because I would’ve gotten the better websites earlier and it could have
helped me a lot more.

After my investigation I had a bigger idea of gender inequality. I knew this was taking place in the
world but I didn’t know how big the problem is and how many women suffer because of it. Knowing
that there is a problem helps to solve the problem as well. This research gave me a brighter idea of
how women feel while being discriminated and how to solve that problem.

The results gave me mixed feelings about my research. There was a disappointment when I couldn’t
find any good resources at first and I didn’t know what volunteer work to do. But afterwards when
the research was finished, the website was created and I knew a lot more information about this
global goal I was proud of eventually finding the information.

5. CONCLUSION
To do more action alone would be hard because there aren’t a lot of things that you can do against
gender inequality. Creating another thee websites wouldn’t help very much, so doing this alone is
not very useful. Within my school we could look at the difference between females and males at our
school. Making sure that there are the same sports for both, same after school activities and
improve any of the unequal differences that we have. Together with friends and other family’s it is
easier to create more awareness. Going around and telling people or hanging up posters is a lot
easier if you’re with a big group. Doing it together would be a lot more fun that doing it alone and if
there’s a bigger group that also means that there could be more ideas. With whole Singapore
together a lot of goals can be completed. If we want Singapore to have less gender inequality we
should talk more about the problems and tell them why it is unfair, why women feel like they are
treated differently. Changing Singapore to an equal country on the side of feminism would be very
good, this will help other countries realize what they should do and maybe some of them will
actually follow.

To go against gender inequality, we need more women to speak about their experiences. We have
to fight this problem over a longer period of time and slowly make it better. We also can’t fight the
whole world at the same time so first only a few countries should fight this global goals and then we
little bit by little bit we ca change the world. When we work on the global goals in our own countries
again we shouldn’t just jump into it and desperately fight gender inequality. First we should make
sure everyone knows that the problem is there and then starting to work on every target. The first
target should be completed first and then make sure that every target is reality.
