Dear Parents,

Della has been a joy to have in labs this semester. She enjoyed playing in the dramatic
play area. She would play with a variety of materials and enjoyed making pretend food and
taking orders for her friends. She also enjoyed exploring her senses at the sensory table or
science areas, one of her favorite activities was playing with slime and cutting it with scissors.
Della was also very social and made many friends; she was great at including everyone and
became a leader to many of the children.

At the beginning of the semester one of Dellas goals was to work on numbers this falls
within the cognitive domain. We used different techniques to help include math throughout the
day in her play. One example was in an activity in the dramatic play area. On October 10, we
noted, Della was pretending the fort was a boat, she was counting the fish she caught and
counted up to six then the teacher took two fish away and counted them again. Della was able to
count to small numbers and recognized one to one correspondence. .

As the semester continued we noticed improvement in this area. She began to count
different items to the teachers without being prompted. One example we noted, was when Della
counted the spider legs on our pet spider. Della has also shown us that she can count up to 10 on
a number of occasions, including a time she was jumping in and out of different hula hoops and
counting her jumps.

Another domain we noticed her growth in was the social domain. At the beginning of the
semester Della had a few friends but at times was hesitant to engage in play with others. On
October 2, we noted, Della and another child held hands as they walked to the apple orchard
and continued to hold hands after we had arrived. This was one of the first breaking points into
Della becoming friends with everyone in class.

As the semester has come to an end Della has reached out to many children and is never
afraid to ask other children what their name was and invited them to play. Over the past few
weeks Della has been playing house with two other children very consistently. Both of the
children call her mom and they have had a lot of fun playing in the dramatic play area as well
as throughout the entire room. Della has made many improvements in this area not just in
making friends but also with sharing and taking turns with others.

We can continue to foster Dellas goal of counting and using numbers by intentionally
adding counting and numbers into her play. An example of this is by creating simple math
problems with her toys, by taking items she has multiples of and counting them emphasizing the
one to one correspondence will help her to understand what numbers are. This can be continued
by taking away a toy or adding to the toys then recounting them. Numbers can also be included
in a more simple way just by counting the number of jumps she does. It has been a pleasure to
have her in class. Thank you for the opportunity to work with her.
Sincerely,

Lab 3 Team
