)

Marking Date: 15th January 2017 (extension given)
Recommended Grade: Distinction

What went well:
 Your composition is gorgeous. You clearly understand harmony and how chords
relate to each other, meaning your final piece is colourful.
 You demonstrate a formal and concise writing style throughout your project.
 Your work is well presented.
 I haven’t needed to give you much feedback on your actual song, but you’ve
responded to feedback on the things you need to do for Rock School quickly and
well, so thanks for that.
 You clearly know the style well and have described effectively what binds your genre
together in your paragraph ‘trends’.

Even better if:
 Next time, evaluate your work as you go along rather than leaving it until the end.

Small changes to be made after Easter:
 In your chord sequence evaluation: The Cm chord was added for a change of tone
and effect that represents the lyrics and the emotion being conveyed. Please point to
where this is in your composition in either the score or final recording. Why does it
change the tone? Does this chord fit in the key? Why/why not?
 Please proof read your work as there are some spelling mistakes.

the “requirements” and “expectations” dichotomy). Which artists are super typical
of your genre and who moved the genre along or also used influences from
elsewhere?

The Score
For a Pass: Accurate, structural score, which will take the form of piano-roll screenshots or
graphic diagrams. If used, the graphic diagram should be clearly representative
of the structure of each composition.

For a Merit: Lead sheet and chord chart with few errors.

For a A fully notated score with few errors. Fully notated means a Sibelius score with
Distinction: tempo marks, articulation, lyrics, phrasing, dynamics, and repeat marks.

The Evaluation
A possible way to present your evaluation is as a diary entry/blog entry. Present drafts and
versions of your composition which eventually built up into your final piece to show your
development.

For a Pass: Evidence skills to evaluate strengths and areas for development realistically and
demonstrate a basic understanding of their progress and in target setting relative
to ongoing improvement.
To achieve this, you need to show your journey from initial ideas to final
composition, showing which ideas you scrapped and which you developed.

need to show that you set yourself targets (for most of you I set these targets for
you, so check your emails and copy and paste).

Recommended grade: Distinction

What went well:
 You’ve created a great composition. It’s catchy and exciting and clearly within your
genre.
 You’ve clearly explained the features and context of your genre. Your research is
thorough and you explain which features are super typical of the genre and whoch
are more progressive (tempo being slower, verse/chorus structures, emotional
moods).
 You’ve set yourself realistic targets in furthering your skills in technology. You’ve
pushed yourself to learn new skills and functions in Ableton Push.
 You’ve accurately used specific musical vocabulary throughout your writing
(monophonic, tempo, bpm).
 You’ve evaluated your research and realised that your genre was too wide and made
efforts to narrow it down to a subgenre, making the composition easier to fit within
a specific style.
 You’ve reflected on your progress.
 You’ve shown how your composition fits your genre (choice of tempo at 128bpm)
and explained why this is appropriate (for dancing).
 You’ve experimented based on your research, made musical decisions, evaluated
their effectiveness, and acted on your evaluations. I experimented with some
modulation and effects of adding swing, delay and some reverb. I decided to
use a little swing but none of the others as they don't work well with the sound
I have.

3
Shray Khanna Rock School L3 Composition: Music (Styles)

 You hit a writer’s block and overcome it by listening to your genre.
 You realised a fully notated score wasn’t appropriate and created an alternative.
 You’ve uploaded a recording.

Even better if:

Small edits to be made:
 There is a bridge section with is very soft in the dynamics and the violins
playing in the key of A# Min creates almost a somber mood. We usually say
Bbmin, not A#min. It’s an enharmonically friendly way of writing the key.
 This song has the bpm of 128 and a Key of G♯ min which places it perfectly in
the Elctro House music genre. Again, we say Abmin, not G#min.
