ART THERAPY

Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses art


materials, such as paints, chalks, and markers. Art therapy
combines traditional psychotherapeutic theories and techniques
with an understanding of psychological aspects of the creative
process, especially the affective properties of the different art
materials.

Art therapy for psychiatric patients is based on the universally-


held belief that everyone finds release from tension and a certain
amount of self-respect when they create something (when they use
a combination of imagination and technical skills to produce a
tangible product).

I. Objectives

A. General Objective

After 30 minutes of nurse - client interaction, the clients will


be able to express their thoughts and feelings through art.

B. Specific Objectives

After 30 minutes of nurse - client interaction, clients will be


able to:
1. state their own rules;
2. draw something according to his imagination and feelings;
3. verbalize feelings and thoughts about his drawing; and,
4. develop a better understanding about themselves and the
way they relate to the people around them.

IV. Task Assignments

Facilitator : facilitates and helps to bring about an outcome by


providing supervision; gives instructions/directions in the
therapy; helps to become aware of the feelings they hold
for one another.
Assistant : provides direct assistance with 1:1 ratio between
student nurse and patient.

Evaluator : notes down verbalization of feelings among clients


after the therapy; promotes sharing of information from
patients who participated in the therapy.

V. Rules to follow during the conduct of the therapy

VIII. Precautions to be observed


Once patient is combative & agitated, report immediately to
the staff on duty.
Monitor the patient during the therapy.
Maintain a safe environment by not using sharp objects such
as pencils and ballpens as materials for the therapy.

IX. Evaluation of the therapy


To be documented in the chart of the patients who
participated in the session.
