# BASIC CALCULUS

## ANTIDERIVATIVE OF A POLYNOMIAL AND RADICAL FUNCTIONS

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
illustrate the antiderivative of a function;
compute the general antiderivative of polynomial functions; and
compute the general antiderivative of radical.

Procedures

A. Introduction
Antiderivative Scavenger Hunt
The teacher will be posting questions about antiderivatives of a function (Basic
Integration Rules, Power Rule, and Properties of Indefinite Integral).

The students will solve problems posted. Then, he/she will going to find answers
written on crumpled papers scattered on the floor (whole classroom). Note that
some of the papers do not contain the correct answers.
The first students who found papers with correct answers will decide if they will
discuss their solution and answer or pin point other to discuss their own work.

B. Motivation
The teacher will ask for four pairs and will do the game charade.
The words to be drawn are related to solving antiderivation of polynomial and radical
function.

C. Delivery
We will look at antiderivatives of polynomial and radical functions using the story
below.
(The class will be divided into 3 groups. Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 will work on Example
#5, Example #4 and Example #6, respectively.)

One afternoon a rain pours hard in the city of Bayambang where Kiko Saluyot
lives. He is a BSE Math student and a candidate for Suma Cum Laude (SCL). In order to
achieve that goal, he should pass his last exam the next day about their recent topic
which is solving antiderivatives of a certain type of function (this is the only chance for
him to be qualified as SCL). However, Kiko fell asleep during their discussion so he has
to study the lesson on his own. Unfortunately, his book got wet during the rain. Some
text are illegible and difficult to read. He opened his book to the page of their recent
topic and saw this:
The title of the topic and procedures are illegible but some of the examples are clear.

Essential Question:
Can Kiko Saluyot has the chance to pass the exam and become Suma Cum Laude? How?

antiderivative of ( + 1)2 . Let them generate rule for this. You may use art of questioning
for them to answer it in their own.)
