What is discovery learning?

Discovery Learning is the learning style which happens in the flow of life in a natural
way, like how a child learns facts about life .If traditional learning way is watching a
movie, discovery learning is being a part of a movie and learn the facts by
living,experiencing.Learning is process-based rather than fact-based
Traditional learning is more like watching the movie.

How does this form of teaching compare to traditional, teacher-centered

instruction?
In traditional method student is mostly in passive mode, but in discovery learning method
student is in active mode, student is questioning experiencing and coming to a conclusion
. Learning is process-based rather than fact-based. Failure is important, student learns
better by doing mistakes. Feedback is necessary. Understanding is deeper.
What educational theories support the discovery learning model?
John Dewey, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky s theories support the discovery learning
model. Dewey believed that children were naturally motivated to actively learn, and
education should only give these opportunities to active learning. Piaget wrote that
understanding comes from discovery,as we learn during our childhood.According Lev
Vygotsky cultural and social factors have a great the impact on cognitive development.

What is the most important thing you discovered about discovery learning?
To me the most important thing about discovery learning is that Failure is a needed factor
for learning. As A teacher I noticed one more time the importance of giving freedom to
students to make mistakes. One of my colleagues technic was making on purpose
mistakes on board with students.
Another conclusion that I came is that even lecturing model can be modified in terms of
discovery learning.Instead of giving the knowledge directly we can do our lecturing with
questions and let students think and discover by themselves.
How can you apply this method to your future classroom?
I personally was not giving the information directly I ask short questions which let
students to think and come many of the conclusions by themselves. What I observed for
years is that when students are getting used to that it is becaming a habit for them.
Surprisingly when I try sometimes give direct formulas sometimes, they mostly dont
accept it and questioning it.I will try to improve myself to give more time and freedom to
students to make mistakes, and more discussing .I

Chapter 12- Teaching Effective Thinking Strategies

Teaching methods. What teaching methods and procedures can be used to

improve students critical thinking abilities? Creative thinking abilities?
Demonstartion method,,the socratic method,concept attainment,cooperative
learning,graphic organizers,simulations and games technics,
In all these methods the main idea is student oriented learning.Accordingly the
procedures are more related to that idea.in all of them students are guided, but the
main role of learning is based on students effort inquiry and questioning and
discussions.

1. Thinking. What type of thinking is emphasized in most schools? Is

critical thinking rewarded? Creative thinking? Is school success
based on students ability to think critically? Creatively?
Mostly since tradidional education model is most common in schools,it is hard to
say critical thinking is emphasized in most schools.Nowadays there are lots of
things talked about critical thinking, but when we go deeper ,and ask what critical
thinking means for teachers, how it can be improved what should be done.At that
point it is not clear foe all minds .As Sanja Maricica says there is not a clear
strategy for the development of critical thinking (1)Schools success are mostly
based on test based exams results and at that point we can not talk about the
success is based on critical thinking and therefore we can not say that critical
thinking is rewarded.

2. The environment. What type of classroom environment would be

conducive to developing critical thinking? Creative thinking? What
problems can you foresee in establishing this environment?
The question is always in my mind whether or not we have to push every student
to be a critical thinker in Math.Another question is are schools the places where
critical thinking ability is gained? Maybe outside of the school is a better place to
gain that ability where there is no stress of grading, peer pressure etc.As Dennis
Bartels mentions Museums and other institutions of informal learning may be
better suited to teach this skill than elementary and secondary schools
