PART B

1. Define shear force and bending moment diagrams for a cantilever with a uniformly
distributed load.
2. A steel plate of width 120 mm and of thickness 20 mm is bent into a circular arc of radius
10 m. Determine the maximum stress induced and the bending moment which will

produce the maximum stress. Take E = 2 10 N/ mm .
UNIT-III
A hollow circular shaft 20 mm thick transmits 300 kW power at 200 r.p.m. Determine the
external diameter of the shaft if the shear strain due to torsion is not to exceed 0.0086. Take
modulus of rigidity = 0.8 105 N/mm2.
A closely coiled helical spring of round steel wire 10 mm in diameter having 10 complete turns
with a mean diameter of 12 cm is subjected to an axial load of 200 N. Determine: (i) the
deflection of the spring (ii) maximum shear stress in the wire, (iii) stiffness of the spring. Take C
= 8 x 104 N/mm2.
UNIT-IV
UNIT-V
A cylinder of internal diameter 0.50 m contains air at a pressure of 7 N/mm2 (gauge). If the
maximum permissible stress induced in the material in 80 N/mm2, find the thickness of the
cylinder.
A water main 80 cm diameter contains water at a pressure head of 100 m. If the weight
density of water is 9810 N/m3, find the thickness of the metal required for the water main.
Given the permissible stress as 20 N/mm2.
