Dear Parents/Guardians and Scholars,

Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics is equivalent to a one-semester four-year
college level introductory course in American Government. The AP exam administered by the College Board
in May tests scholars’ knowledge of content, writing skills, and analytical thought. Scholars are graded on a
scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest score. Scholars who earn a 3 or better may be entitled to college
credit, advanced placement in college, or both, depending on the individual policies of the university. All
scholars enrolled in AP Government are expected to take the exam on Thursday, May 10, 2018.

In addition, the course itself will be conducted as a college level class in which scholar participation,
discussion and initiative are essential components. It should be understood at the outset that there will be a
significant amount of reading, written homework assignments, essays, and projects assigned outside the
classroom. The course will demand a high level of commitment and responsibility from scholars who wish to
succeed, but will also be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

While I didn’t want to bombard your summer with a ton of AP homework, but I did feel it necessary to keep
the wheels in your brain turning just a bit so that we can hit the ground running in September. There will be a
two part assignment that is due on the first day of class. The first part of the assignment will be critical
thinking reflection questions. The second part of the assignment is to keep a current events portfolio. These
assignments will be integral to our work on the first day. Whatever you do, make sure that you do not wait
until the last minute and definitely make sure that your work is your own!

Should you have any questions, feel free to contact me over the summer and I look forward to seeing you
this fall.

Sincerely,

Ms. K. Harris
