responses of net CO2 assimilation (closed square), and transpiration (open square) (Jones, 1976; Rosenberg et al.,
1983; Mansfield et al., 1990; Radin et al., 1994; Liu et al., 2002; Medrano et al., 2002; Thompson et al., 2007; Avola
et al., 2008; Timlin et al., 2008). Transpiration rate increases linearly with stomatal conductance. Net CO2
assimilation also linearly increases with stomatal conductance, but saturates at higher conductance. WUEi increases
with stomatal conductance at low stomatal conductance because the slope of net CO2 assimilation is steeper than
the slope of transpiration. A reduction in stomatal conductance from A to B will improve WUE because transpiration is
reduced (A B), but the reduction of net CO2 assimilation is minimized (A B).
