the 10 Best Family Cars for 2017, a
reliable resource for families con-
sidering a new car purchase. For the 10th
consecutive year, the parenting and car
experts partnered to examine and assess
hundreds of vehicles. The list was nar-
rowed down to ten models that offer the
best combination of value, performance,
safety and family-friendly features.
Its so important that families feel safe
and comfortable while on the road as well
as confident in the price they paid for the
cars features, says Parents magazine
Editor-in-Chief Liz Vaccariello. Between
school drop-offs, playdate pickups, sports-
practice shuttling and carpools, we spend
so much time in our family vehicles. This
years top picks highlight features that
support the needs of Mom and Dad, and
also kid passengers of all sizes - from our

Sonata Takes the Cake
Stemming from a partnership
between two of the most trusted

tive, respectively, the award rec-
ognizes 10 total vehicles pulled
from various classifications. These
awards address the myriad needs
of families on the road, from fuel
efficiency to passenger and cargo
capacity and beyond. In addition,
the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe was
one of only five vehicles recog-
nized with an honorable men-
tion by the outlets. The Sonata

ccording to the Insurance In-
formation Institute, more than
700,000 motor vehicles were re-
ported stolen in the United States in 2015.
Car theft is not exclusive to the United
States, as the Insurance Bureau of Canada
reports that automobile theft costs Cana-
dians roughly $1 billion each year.
Take Precaution
Car thieves are often highly skilled, but
that does not mean car owners cannot take
steps to reduce their risk of being victim-
ized by auto theft. Take the simple steps,
such as suggestions like keeping cars
locked at all times and rolling up all win-
dows before walking away from the car.
These may sound simple, but theyre also
very effective. Drivers should avoid being

Route 66, a celebration of kitsch thats worth saving

useums dont always have to
come in the shape of white-col-
umned buildings, with under-
ground parking garages and yellowing
parchment behind thick glass. They can
be a ribbon of pavement that meanders
through cornfields and scrub, a celebra-
tion of Americana in the form of gaudy
neon motel signs and shiny diners with
butterscotch malts on their menus.
Museum of Route 66
Stretching nearly 2,500 miles from Chi-
cago to Santa Monica, California, Route 66 is
indeed a museum, a trove of quirky culture
venerated in song, cinema and literature. Nat
King Coles discography wouldnt be the
same without (Get Your Kicks On) Route
66. The Joads rumbled their teetering ja-
lopy down Route 66 in Steinbecks Grapes
of Wrath. Even Disneys animated smash,
Cars, owes the inspiration for its Tow Ma-
ter character to a rusted tow truck parked by
an abandoned gas station in Galena, Kansas.

Our Route 66 adventure to Rockabilly on
the Route in Tucumcari, New Mexico began
as we headed east on Old RT. 66 through the
canyon. With Albuquerque in the rear view
mirror, like a bird we caught a tailwind that
sent us sailing right along The Musical
Highway! Aiming the passenger side tires
center on the keys of the road, 45 miles per
hour with a steady speed, we experienced
beautiful notes from the road indeed. We
traveled Old Rt. 66 as far out as possible
until forced onto Interstate 40. Anytime it
looked like there was a slight chance there
could be a small slice of The Mother Road
nearby to explore, we would exit immedi-
ately. Along the way we steered onto an
uncharted section of Old RT. 66. Onward,
with the top down we followed the broken
asphalt into Tucumcari to a greeting from a
glowing horizon of neon that illuminated
the night sky!

It was the summer of 1955 and I was
about 8-years-old at the time. My fam-
ily consisted of one brother, Frank, just a
year older than my two sisters Lillian,
5 and Eileen who was 4. Our mom raised
us all on her own, as our father had died
a year-and-a-half earlier. Being raised by

feel should continue to be preserved and
promoted. In two years, the National Park
Services Route 66 Corridor Preservation
Program expires. Money earmarked for that
program has hardly walloped the federal
budget just $2 million since 2001, when
the program began. But that money has
paid for nearly 150 projects along the road-
way. Its not just federal money that goes to
those projects the federal share has been
matched by $3.3 million from business, non-
profits and local governments.
Route 66 Projects & History
None of those projects are extravagant
in scope: a revamp of the Rialto Square The-
ater marquee in Joliet, Illinois, restoration
of neon signs for the Dell Rheas Chicken
Basket restaurant in Hinsdale, Illinois, and
the Donut Drive-In in St. Louis; a fix-up of
the Baxter Springs Independent Oil and
Gas Station in Baxter Springs, Kansas; roof
a single Mom, money was tight to say
the least. Disneyland had opened about
a year earlier and watching the magical
land on our 13-inch black and white TV
mesmerized all of us. Like kids then and
today we dreamed of someday making
the trip to California and seeing it for
ourselves. Somehow our mom made our
dream come true.
About six months earlier our 1948
Dodge finally gave up the ghost. Our
Mom bought a shiny new blue 1955
Chevy, the first new car our family
owned. Little did we know that our mom
was already planning our road trip down
Route 66 all the way to California. My
mom had never been to California so
she had us help with the planning. She
picked Riverside for our stopping point
thinking it was near Disneyland. Little
did she know it was hours away. That
summer day had finally arrived and we
loaded up three adults and the four of
us kids in that 55 Chevy with no AC. My
Mom had decided to invite our Grand-
parents, the more the merrier.
Route 66 was a two-lane road around
that time with a speed limit of 55, slow go-
ing. After driving all day with no mishaps,
except for my mild carsickness, we arrived
at our destination, Flagstaff, Arizona. That
first night in a hotel was a real thrill for all
of us. We were back on 66 again and sped
through Arizona, literally, we got stopped
by the Highway Patrol. My Grandfather
was doing 10 over the speed limit, a blis-
repairs at the Navajo County Courthouse
in Holbrook, Arizona. Theyre not massive
overhauls simply modest spruce-ups
that keep intact Route 66s kitschy feel.
A bipartisan bill now in Congress would
designate Route 66 as a National Historic
Trail. That would ensure preservation funds
are allocated for roadway projects every
year. And it would ensure that Route 66 re-
mains the storied tourist destination that it
is now, drawing tens of thousands of visi-
tors annually from every corner of the world
Brazil to Russia, Germany to China. Con-
gress can also reauthorize the corridor pres-
ervation program as it did in 2009, when it
gave the program 10 more years. We prefer
the National Historic Trail option, since it
doesnt carry an expiration date.
History Behind 66
There was a time when Route 66s pur-
pose was very different. It opened in 1926,
part of the countrys first federal highway
system. During the Great Depression, the

the officer scolding my Grandfather and
telling him, I have a mind to put every-
one on a train to California and have you
drive there by yourself. My Grandfather
got off with just a scolding and we were on
our way again at a legal 55 mph. Because
our Mom was new to driving cross country
we drove through the desert in the middle
of the day; no air conditioning except for
the open windows and vents. We finally
arrived in Riverside to find out that we
werent next door to Disneyland like we
had planned. The hotel manager was kind
enough to cancel our reservation, refund
my Moms deposit and call ahead to make
a reservation at a hotel in Anaheim. The
next day we drove through miles of orange
groves to finally arrive at Disneyland. It is
difficult to put into words the thrill of fi-
nally being there. After spending the day at
Disneyland our next excursion was Knotts
Berry Farm. It was quite different then,
mostly an old west town; but it was fun.
The next day my mom booked us a hotel
in Los Angeles and we were getting lost
like the usual tourists. The next part of our
journey was to San Diego, where we spent
a couple of days. After that it was back on
Route 66 heading for Albuquerque and
the end of our journey. Route 66 will al-
ways have a special place in my heart; my
thoughts remember that 55 Chevy lumber-
ing down that two lane road, the wind in
my face, not a care in the world except get-
ting to Disneyland.

hatch westward. With Americas entrance
into World War II, Route 66 served as a vi-
tal corridor for troops and supplies moving
between military installations, and for job
seekers headed toward West Coast defense
plants. With President Eisenhowers start
of the U.S. interstate highway system in
1956, traffic took to the new expressways,
and Route 66 began to wither. Communi-
ties dotting the road struggled economi-
cally. Many became ghost towns.
Tourism became the roads salvation,
and its what keeps the communities
alongside Route 66 alive today. Many of
them are Main Street USA throwbacks,
a time-travel back to an era of mom-
and-pop gas stations and motels aglow
in neon. Our favorite: the Blue Swallow
Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico, which
beckons with the pitch, 100 percent Re-
frigerated Air. It all adds up to a time
capsule well worth cherishing and
keeping alive.
