hen you live in an A-frame, or,
IHOP, as we like to call it (sans
the orange roof), the one rather
sad part is that birds tend to fly into the
upper windows. Even hanging medal-
lions hasnt seemed to help and it is
not uncommon for us to be casually
eating lunch or watching the news when
something with the audible force of a
softball, hits above your head and makes
you jump six feet out of your chair and
waste a rather nice pinot noir as it plops
onto your lap.
The good news is that more often than
not the birds are only stunned and they
are immediately taken into ER: my down-
stairs bathroom sink, where I carefully
place them on a soft towel, turn out
the lights and close the door (much to
the annoyance of Bub) and wait several
minutes for them to recover. Sometimes
it takes them a very little while, and
sometimes, as I can imagine theyve
probably suffered concussion and terri-
ble whiplash, a full hour.
Generally I mention to Paul that there
is a patient in the loo, but if hes not
home and Im out running errands, I
dont, and hes not terribly fond of being

Q: What is going on with the
stoplights in Greer?
A: Greer commuters have
probably noticed that a number
of stoplights in the downtown/
Wade Hampton area have been
undergoing some sort of main-
tenance. Several lights along
Poinsett Street, Wade Hampton
and other roads have been
bagged, and what looks like a
temporary light is currently in
place.
According to the South Car-
olina Department of Trans-
portation, traffic lights along
Highway 29, SC 146, and SC
296 are being improved and
cameras in several locations are
being added.
Although the SCDOT website
confirms the project, it does
not give a completion date or
any further details regarding
changes being made to traffic
signals.

ing to examine up close and the most in-
teresting one of all was the recent, quite
large, Pileated Woodpecker who hit the
window with the force of a baseball bat.
I was sitting at the kitchen table and saw
him immediately drop onto the deck,
and dashed out the door as two of the
cats were out and approached him as if
he was manna from heaven, salivating.
Lying on his side, Woody was breath-
ing rapidly and I was mindful that his
poor neck might be broken (the size
of his head was enormous and I cant
even imagine how strong their necks

The debate over paying for
media/newspaper content
This week, lets pay a visit to Abbeville, a
beautiful historic and quaint Southern city.
There, it would seem that Jonathan Phipps,
Abbeville County Schools superintendent, was
more like TVs Sheriff Andy Griffith than Mark
Hall, the citys police chief.
How so?
Hall is the one who is supposed to uphold the
law, no matter what, no matter who is affect-
ed. Yet, Hall asked the superintendent to drop
his request that State Law Enforcement Division
investigate a situation, caught on camera, in
which a city police officer was roaming the halls
of the high school. Now its not just that the
officer was caught on camera roaming the halls.
There were concerns that the school building
had been forcibly entered, that a book was tak-
en and that two officers, in fact, were playing
basketball.
All in a days work and part of routine pa-
trolling? Probably not. Its important that the
taxpayers who fund the schools and officers
who patrol the city know theyre getting their
due.
If anything improper was done, Phipps is ab-
solutely right to want it found out and handled
whether done by a regular resident or, certain-
ly more so, whether done by someone in law
enforcement. And Hall should want to ensure
his police department is beyond reproach. He
should have teamed with Phipps to get to the
bottom of the matter, not ask him to drop the
investigation.
This might not be on par with the James Com-
ey/President Trump matter, but its important

And so we give Phipps a thumbs up for doing
whats right. Its obvious who gets the thumbs
down in this case.

he was a self-employed
mechanic, a US Army Air
Corps WWII Veteran and a
member of Double Springs
Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daugh-
ter, Nancy Austin, (Joe) of

We called in a local
nonprofit each day, said
Jessi Chapman, who re-
cently started volunteer-
ing at GCM. They all came
in and told us about what
they do to inform those
children so that those
children feel more com-
fortable even coming in
and asking for help if they
needed to. Plus, they know
they always have good
people in the community
that are looking out for
them.
"The children loved do-
ing the projects to help
the local nonprofits, and
we got the opportuni-
ty to share with them
about how these agencies
take good care of those
in need, added Hannah
Rainwater, GCM events co-
ordinator.
The Hero Kids Fest par-
ticipants were children of
Greer Community Minis-
tries clients. Throughout
the week, the students
made placemats for the
soup kitchen, painted can-
vases for Greer Relief, and
potted plants in recycled
milk cartons for GCM's se-
nior diners to take home.

dedicated member of Vic-
tor Baptist Church where
she was in the choir and a

the Love Class.

volunteers from other lo-
cal churches.
I loved just getting to
hear them shout our Bible
verse each day, Chap-
man said, which was, Do
good, seek peace and go
after it, and that was so
fun. Theyre screaming at
the top of their lungs, so
excited.
Memorial United Meth-
odist Church provided the
decorations. Praise Cathe-
dral, Resurrection Church,
and the Church at Greer
Station provided volun-
teers to lead recreation
and Bible Study time.
"We love bringing the
community together to in-
vest in the lives of others,"
Rainwater said.

Church of Mt. Pleasant
who helped each day in
the Hero Kids Fest and at
GCM doing various clean-
ing and organizing tasks,
Gibson said. The Greer
Fire Department brought a
fire truck out on the final
day.
Greer First Baptist

Vacation Bible School with
the same curriculum at 6
p.m. nightly from July 24-
27 for children 3K to fifth

BURLEIGH: Recalls 20 years of service in Air Force

I grew up on the north
side of Atlanta off the
end of the runway at Dob-
bins Air Reserve Base, so
I remember watching air-
planes from my earliest
days, he said. It was kind
of something I was inter-
ested in. It never occurred
to me that Id be flying
over that same house
some time in the future,
and I was.
When the draft came for
the Vietnam War, Burleigh
took matters into his own
hands after postponing
his initial call to service.
I got in aviation because
I didnt want to walk,
Burleigh said. I got to fly
instead of walking in Viet-
nam; unless, of course, I
got shot down or crashed
or something.
A buddy took a picture
of him walking away from
a crash site, he said.
Burleigh likes to remem-
ber the humorous side of
his service.
We prefer not to really
dwell on the things that
would give people night-
mares. We might talk
about those people that
we lost or got hurt, he
said.
Burleigh has flown on an
honor flight to see memo-
rials in Washington D.C.
I have two roommates
and about eight class-
mates that are on the wall,
so its personal, Burleigh
said.
He spent four years in
the Army and 20 years in
the Air Force. He flew a
Bell UH-1 Iroquois, more
commonly known as a
Huey helicopter, during
his service. Burleighs
Huey received the name
Junk Run. While Burleigh
was in the army, he got
caught in a reduction in
force (RIF).
Eight months after I got
off of active duty with the
army, I was back on active
duty with the air force,
Burleigh said.
He attended flight
school, flew fighters for
six years, worked with air
traffic control, flew freight
and spent 23 years with
Atlantic Southeast Air-
lines, which was a part of
Delta, he said.
In all of that, one thing
leads to another, Burleigh
said. You start off with
baby steps. If youre qual-
ified, you take bigger
steps.

Adult baseball league coming to Greer

The Greer Parks and
Recreation Department
will launch a new adult
baseball league at Stevens
Field this August.
The wooden bat league
is for adults over the age
of 30 and will celebrate its
opening day on Aug. 8.
Its not for young guys,
organizer Chad Hart, a
Blue Ridge High product,
said. Its for old guys like
myself who still want to
play baseball and dont
want to play softball. A lot
of these guys played high
school and college ball
and even some in the mi-
nor leagues, so well have
some good athletes out
there. It should be fun.
Although the league is
for players 30 and over,
each team will be allowed
three athletes under the
age of 30.
I knew there would be
guys that were post-col-
lege, maybe the 25-30

North Greenville foot-
ball players checked in
on Monday to begin their
college careers, looking to
build on last seasons suc-
cess.
The Foundation has
been firmly planted as the
Crusaders checked in at
No. 16 in one college foot-
ball preseason poll.

top 25-teams by Lindys
Magazine, a college foot-
ball publication that cov-

his is going to sound
hilarious to future Bil-
ly, but I see no reason
for any man, woman or
child to be up at 5 a.m.
I understand that, with
a baby due in a couple of
months, I will only ever
wake up at 5 a.m. for the
rest of my life.
But as for nowand
really for the first five
(almost six) years of
marriage, there just hasnt
been a reason to roll out
of bed before 7 a.m.
But a couple months
ago, as I found myself lay-
ing on the couch plowing
through a whole bag of
chips and salsa, watching
so many episodes of The
Office that Netflix had
to check and make sure I
was still thereI decided
I needed to get in better
shape.
After all, Ive got a little
girl to worry about now.
Theres not going to be as
much time for workouts
when my wife and I have
a screaming infant in the
house.
I have to make use of
the time that I have before
the clock strikes midnight
and this little bundle of
joy takes over.
Now, diet and exercise
(for me at least) has been
100 percent cyclical. Ill
have several months
where I make every wrong
decision (curse you,
QT pizza!) followed by
several months of fruits,
veggies and long runs
around the neighborhood.
A couple of years ago, I
got very locked in and
lost about 55 pounds
(which everyone in my life
will tell you was too much
weight for me to lose).
I dont know why I cant
just stick to reasonable
habits. When it comes to
diet and exercise, Its been
all or nothing.
But theres a lack of
discipline in that. Its a
shortsighted way to look
at health and it has cost
me plenty along the way,
Im sure.
With all that being said,
I still dont understand
why people discipline
themselves to do active
things at five in the morn-
ing.
But they do. Just take a
drive through downtown
Greer at that time (I dont
know why you would) and
you will see about 15 men
doing ridiculous workouts
at nearby locations.
Im all in on account-
ability in fitness, and
working out with other
folks is a good way to
achieve that, but when
that alarm goes off at 5
a.m. I say a few words
that you might not hear
from me at any other
point in the day.
The group is called
F3, and its a faith-based
organization that initiates
small workout groups in
local areas.
Its free, its difficult,
and you dont need to
bring anything but your
questionable 5 a.m. atti-
tude.
All jokes aside, these
workouts have challenged
me to rethink a lot of bad
habits.
I need to discipline
myself to be up at 5 a.m.
I need to have positive
relationships with other
Christian men that will
push me in my spiritual
life.
I really need to chal-
lenge my body in the ways
it has been challenged,
and carry that progress
throughout the day.
F3 has been a valuable
instructor for me in a
time where I desperately
needed to learn some
discipline.

The disgrace of Mayweather/McGreggor

I
ll never forget the first
pay-per-view (PPV) fight
I ever saw.
It was December 7, 1989
and I was 13-years-old.
It was a tough age to be,
and boxing had become
my escape. Id watch
the fights on ESPN and
USA every Tuesday and
Thursday nights, and read
Boxing magazines reli-
giously. There was a good
chance I could tell ya the
champion of any weight
division (even if I couldnt
necessarily pronounce
them.)
My first pay-per-view
fight featured middle-
weight hall-of-famers
Sugar Ray Leonard and
Roberto Duran. I was
so excited that I begged
my dad to order it weeks
in advance. Just six
months before, Leon-
ard and Thomas Hearns
had fought an excellent
pay-per-view fight that
had ended in a draw. I
expected Leonard and Du-
ran to provide an equally
captivating match
Boy was I disappointed.

be a snore, and Leonard
cruised to an easy victory
as the sell-out Las Vegas
crowd booed. Even at that
early age, I should have
learned my lesson.
Regretably, I did not.
In the nearly three
decades since, Ive seen
about two dozen more
PPV boxing contests and
found only two or three
were worth the money.
Nowadays, I almost never
order them, as they usu-
ally cost between $60-70
and are all but guaranteed
to disappoint.
Last week, details were
finalized for a novel-
ty PPV event that will
feature undefeated (and
previously retired) boxer
Floyd Mayweather and
UFC champion Connor
McGreggor.
The fight, which will be
a boxing match instead of
a mixed martial arts af-
fair, stands as a disgrace
to the sport and further
greed of PPV promoters.
Basically, McGreggor
has no shot to win this
fight and very little even
of winning a single round.
Even though hes now
40-years-old and hasnt
fought in a couple years,
Mayweather is the best
defensive fighter Ive
ever seen and has shown

grapple. The mental state
is the same. You still have
to prepare yourself to go
in there and win the fight.
The heavyweight said

a small family, he said.
Its a great place to be.

to compete. We also have
guys who just want to
work out and get in better

Good fortune finally
found Byron again, who
never was seriously chal-
lenged down the stretch,
but only had four or five
laps of fuel left before his
last pit stop helped set the
stage for victory.
We definitely got a
huge break the way the
caution fell right there,
Byrons crew chief, Dave
Elenz, told FS1 pit report-
ers during a caution peri-
od with 15 laps to go.
Byron made the most
of it. He won last year at
Iowa, but in the NASCAR
Camping World Truck Se-
ries.
Its awesome just to
kind of come this far,
said Byron, who received
a congratulatory call from
Rick Hendrick after the
win.
The ninth caution of the
night also benefitted some
less familiar top-10 finish-
ers, including Ryan Sieg,
who ran second to notch
his fourth career top-five
finish in 117 series starts.
Tyler Reddick took third.
It was fun racing with his night.
Tyler at the end, Sieg
said. We had a little bit of
a battle.
Christopher Bell in
the second leg of his first
double-duty weekend
started on the pole and re-
mained on point the entire
first stage, fending off an
early challenge from team-
mate Kyle Benjamin, and
a late charge from Sam
Hornish, Jr., who made his
first start in nine months.
Hornish led 183 laps
while winning last season
at Iowa, but misfortune
struck 19 laps into stage
two as Bell made contact
with his rear fender an
encounter that sent Hor-
nish careening into the

Duncan couple seeking adoption match

Ben and Ashley Remick
have always dreamed of
having a big family.
The Duncan couple ex-
changed vows in 2008 and
shortly thereafter began
to explore the possibility
of children.
When Ben and I first
met, we both talked about
families, Ashley said. We
have always wanted to
have a family. We'd love to
have a big family. We talk-
ed about having our own.
Ashleys parents were
foster parents, and she
spent nine years as a case
manager at Southeastern
Childrens Home in Dun-
can.
I know theres a need, fore they were successful
Ashley said. Wed always
talked about adoption as
a possibility, but in our
minds at the time it was
down the road. It would be

Jason Isbell first ap-
peared onstage with the
Drive-By Truckers and
instantly took the band to

The two songs he wrote
for the groups 2003
album, Decoration Day
are so good that he still
plays them every show he
does.
Indeed, Isbell set the
bar so high with his early
Truckers material that it an extraordinary blend

of a decade to properly
establish himself as one
of the prodigious solo
acts in country rock mu-
sic. The artist would tell
you himself that its been
a rocky road. Sirens in
the Ditch, his 2007 debut
with his hand-picked

followed had neither the
consistency nor power
to match it. However the
singers focus returned af-
ter a 2012 stint in alcohol

nature fundraiser, Bastille
Days Greenville, July 14-
16.
The event is a celebra-
tion of French National
Day and the bonds that
link the Upstate with the
country.
It is an opportunity
for us to bring light to
South Carolina history, as
well as, promote Franco
American relations in the
Upstate, said Deborah
Dunlap, executive direc-
tor of Black Sheep Farm,
Ltd. There are scores of
people in the Upstate that
have lived and/or worked
in France and have a great
appreciation for the coun-
try and the culture. Horses
are a big part of the French
culture.
The event kicks off with
a Bastille Day Gala from
6:30-11:30 p.m. on Friday,

few years ago, despite reg-
ular use of sunscreen, I
noticed a couple of small,
dark patches on my face.
I began using a product
that contained 2 percent
hydroquinone, which the
package says is a target-
ed skin lightener. The
problem is, those dark
patches havent changed
at all, except that they
are a lot bigger. My ques-
tions are: Is this product
really effective? Would my
skin discoloration be even
worse if I hadnt used it?
Does the product perhaps
make the problem worse?
Finally, what is your rec-
ommendation for treating
skin discolorations? -- N.C.
ANSWER: Hydroquinone
inhibits an enzyme neces-
sary for making melanin,
so if the darkening of the
skin on your face is due
to melanin (and most are),
then hydroquinone ought
to work. If its not, its tionable.
possible that of the more
than 50 conditions that
can cause dark coloration
of the skin listed in my
textbook, you have one
not due to melanin pro-
duction.
Its also possible that
the 2 percent strength of
hydroquinone isnt strong
enough for you. Concen-
trations over 2 percent
(up to 4 percent) are avail-
able only by prescription.
Also, sunlight can reverse
the effect of hydroqui-
none, so you need to stay
out of the sun. Id recom-
mend both sun-protective
clothing (e.g., a hat) AND
a sunscreen of level 35 or

nesium 500 mg daily for
moderate to severe tinni-
tus.

of magnesium (over the
counter) and got relief
fairly rapidly from the tin-
nitus. I stayed on the mag-
nesium for about a year.
Occasionally, it returned,
and I went back on that

are not yet available, but
I think there has been
enough published on the
possible effectiveness
and safety of magnesium
supplementation that it
is reasonable to give it a
try. Magnesium deficien-
cy is common, especially
in people taking diuret-

side effect of magnesium
supplementation is diar-
rhea, which is unlikely at a
