What is Independence Day? By Jocelyn Horlacher Ross-Rayford

From the Friends of the Library Chris Wisham

Why do Americans celebrate the Fourth of July as the birthday of the United States of America? The American Revolution of 1775 led our colonies to become independent of Britain. Following this victory over the British, the colonists asked Thomas Jefferson, respected as a writer, to compose a Declaration of Independence declaring Rights for which these men fought. In addition, they defined who among them had

these rights. The rights they were claiming were those of

“life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. Eventually

The Friends of the Library (FOL) are excited with the decision to build a new Library for all of the citizens of Dale County. As members of FOL, we are looking forward to being a part of this project and are pledging our support of

money that is currently in our CDs.

These CDs are currently

earning very little interest and as they approach their maturity date, we will place them into an investment account, where they will earn a greater rate of return. By the middle of November, we will have over $20,000 earning more money

for our Capital Building Fund. We will assume a point

position of leadership.

our final CD reaches its maturity date and we invest a final

It will be in December of 2018 when

they agreed among themselves that these rights would belong to everyone considered a member of the colonies. It was on July 4, 1776, when those who gathered to declare their Rights and their Independence from England celebrated the birth of our nation. It is a date when the United States of America is considered to have been born, Our Nation’s First Birthday. A hundred years later, on July 4, 1876 our nation’s 100 th birthday, France tried unsuccessfully to give our

$3,000.00 in the account. We know that the citizens of Dale

County must be the third leg to the funding solution triangle to building our new Library. We want to be the catalyst that starts the snowball of public enthusiasm for the public funding. Our goal is to raise over one hundred thousand

dollars.

The other two legs of the funding triangle must be

the two major governmental bodies in Dale County: Dale

County Commission and the City of Ozark. Each must

nation a birthday gift of the Statue of Liberty, but it was not ready to be delivered. On July 4, 1976, a hundred

support our building project. If all three legs of our funding triangle come through, then the Library Board will be able to

years after that, 212 ships from 34 countries traveled up the Hudson River toward New York, to provide this city with the world’s largest fireworks display. That year, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, over 25, 000 people visited Independence Hall because it was here that the colonist first read their Declaration of Independence in 1776. Another symbol of this important day in our history is the Liberty Bell. Several days following July 4, 1775, the Declaration of Independence was officially

accepted. To let everyone know, they rang a newly made

present a strong case to the Wiregrass Foundation for them to

pledge a large portion to complete the funding of our new library here in Dale County. In addition, the Library will

propose a grant to a Federal/State entity that will enable our new Library to become a reality that will be the pride of all Dale County citizens. The Library and the FOL are planning, with cooperation of the city, to hold an auction at the Civic Center where we auction donated items such as an RV, two motorcycles and many more items that we are in the process of gathering and soliciting from the citizens of Dale County. All of the funds generated by the auction will be added to the funds we are putting in the account toward our goal of $100,000.00 or more

bell to signify the birth of our new nation. They were so

excited that they rang it so hard, the bell cracked. To this

day, no one has been able to repair the crack in this bell.

There is even birthday music associated with our nation’s birthday. Celebrations begin with, “America, America, My Country, ‘tis of thee, Sweet Land of Liberty, of thee I sing”. Many sing the victory song associated with the colonists, “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy, a Yankee Doodle, do or die, A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam’s, Born on the Fourth of July…” Today, we still have only thirteen stripes on our national flag even though we are a nation of 50 states. Each stripe stands for one of those very courageous original thirteen colonies who made us one on the 4 th of July, 1776.

Now, our 4 th of July Celebrations honor the courage and efforts of those who continue to help us become one Nation.

component. If anyone is interested in donating items to be auctioned or money donations can bring them to the Library, where they will be taken in and turned over to the FOL. The month of July will be a busy one for the FOL. On

Saturday, July 8 from 9am until 12 noon, we will hold a mini book sale. The extra incentive of this book sale is that it is a

The next FOL

meeting will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday July 12 at the

library. The executive committee meeting will precede the FOL meeting on Tuesday at 9:30 am at the library. On Tuesday, July 18, at 5:30 we will host our community event to honor the 100-year celebration of Alabama’s part in World

War I.

Dr. Martin Oliff will talk about his book The Great

War in the Heart of Dixie: Alabama during World War I.

We will provide light refreshments to all attendees.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Our Summer Reading Program was phenomenal and the children had a great time, but with Lou Harry, Joni Wood, and our new Children’s Librarian, Cheryl, did you expect anything less? They had a fun-filled, educational four weeks that culminated with a giant

water slide and pizza. We especially say thank you to all our sponsors who helped make this year’s Summer Reading Program a great success. July 4 th we celebrate Independence Day, also known as Fourth of July. It all started in 1775 when people in New England began fighting the British for their independence. As we celebrate this important holiday this year, may we remember the true meaning of

independence and freedom, and remember to fly our flag proudly!

The Friends of the Library (FOL) will sponsor a program in honor of our Alabama

soldiers from World War I at 5:30 on July 18. Dr. Martin Oliff, Archivist at Wiregrass Archives, Troy University, Dothan, will discuss his book, The Great War in the Heart of

Dixie: Alabama During World War I.

Join us for this enjoyable and educational program.
