UNIT TOPIC: Genius Hour


LESSON TITLE: Presentations

OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to work in groups in order to complete a plan with
six categories for their Genius Hour presentations.

CONTENT STANDARDS:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.8.1
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and
teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on
others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.10
Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision)
and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-
specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

INTRODUCTION:

Students will begin class with their daily warm-up. Students will analyze an image
that the teacher has selected and respond to the guided questions in their
writers notebooks[10 MIN]
The guided questions asks students the following:
What would you title this image?
What is happening in this image?
What is the message of the image?

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

The teacher will pass out the Genius Hour Presentation Plan handout to each
student while they are working on their warm-up.
The teacher will then use the Gradual Release of Responsibility method to go
over how to fill out the plan. [14 MIN]
The Genius Hour Presentation Plan Handout requires
students to respond to the following categories:
Topic
Reasons for choosing topic
What you planned to do and why
Pros & Cons of your solution
What you learned
How can this be used to benefit your society/
the world?
The teacher will first explain each category to the students.
The teacher will then ask for volunteers or use Classdojo to
provide examples on how to fill out parts of the plan.
Once the class has finished filling out the Genius Hour Presentation Plan as a
whole, the teacher will show the class a teacher created example of a Genius
Hour Presentation. [5 MIN]
The teacher will go over guidelines that are expected to be
met for the presentation.
Students presentations must be/have the following:
5-7 minutes long
AT LEAST 6 Slides with all the categories on
the plan
Neat and legible

Students will get into their Genius Hour groups to complete the plan and start
working on their presentations. [10 MIN]
The teacher will circulate the classroom and stamp any
group plans that are finished.

ADAPTATIONS:

The teacher has implemented preferential seating for ELLs, struggling readers,
and students with special needs.
The teacher has created a Google Slides presentation to present information
visually for ELLs, students with special needs, and all other students.
The teacher has created an organized handout for students to plan their
presentation.

ASSESSMENT:
The teacher will assess students through class discussion and the completion of the
Genius Hour Presentation Plan handout.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Document camera, projector, paper, pen, pencil, handouts,


Chromebooks, and Internet.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: No homework will be assigned.
