streak.
Honda I`m not going this time. We prioritize the

thing.

ticipating...
Honda The proiect`s results are more important
than golf results, right?
Suzuki Right. Just like you, Mr. Honda. Well then,
I`m not participating either. Let`s do our
best together this weekend.

BeIore explaining today`s grammar point, coniugating the plain nonpast negative oI class one and two
verbs will be briefy covered. In order to Iorm the plain nonpast negative oI class two verbs, drop the ru and
add nai. For class one verbs, change the last syllable Irom the u column to the a column and add nai. There
is one exception, though, which is verbs ending in the hiragana syllable u. For these verbs, change the u to
wa, and add nai. Refer to the chart below.
Verbs ending in 'LFWLRQDU\IRUP 1HJDWLYHIRUP
iru/eru (class two) taberu tabenai
iru/eru (class two) miru minai
ku kiku kikanai
gu oyogu oyoganai
nu shinu shinanai
su hanasu hanasanai
bu asobu asobanai
mu yomu yomanai
ru noru noranai
tsu motsu motanai
u suu suwanai
And now, today`s grammar point is the no da sentence ending phrase. It is used when the speaker is ex-
plaining something, or asking Ior an explanation about something, and can be translated as 'the reason
is...¨ 'The Iact is that...¨ and so Iorth. The phrase is Iormed like this:
[Verb/Adj-i].plain + ߩޓߛ
no da
|Adi-na.stem/Noun| ¹ (ߥߛߞߚޓߩޓߛ
na/datta no da

Doushite kinou konakatta n desu ka?

Notes:
In conversational speech, the no da/desu is often replaced with n da/desu. In casual Ieminine speech, the
phrase is shortened down to just no.
In the second example, the speaker explains the reason Ior S

, and thus the no da phrase should be
used.
