TABLE OF CONTENTS
Philippines has experienced a fairly modest economic growth with an average GDP
growth of 6.3% from 2010 to 2014. Economic growth is supposed to lead to poverty
reduction but such is not the case in our country. Twenty-five million Filipinos are
still poor.
In 1990, countries of the world, through the Millennium Development Goals, agreed
to reduce poverty by 50% in 25 years, by 2015. Philippines missed that goal. Back in
the early 1990s, the country had one of the lowest poverty rates at about 30%. By
2015, that ratio should have been 15%. It did not happen. Today, poverty incidence is still high at 26%, indicating that
the economic growth has not trickled down to the bottom of the pyramid.
Inclusive growth is therefore imperative for our country to truly prosper. One important key to inclusive growth is the
active participation of the private sector in creating employment opportunities and delivering basic services through social
enterprises.
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
A social enterprise (SE) is a business that is driven by a social mission or purpose. The mission may be economic, social,
cultural or environmental. The SEs primary goal, though, is poverty reduction and alleviation through the creation of a
sustainable business.
Being a business, it is engaged in the selling of a product or a service in order to generate revenue and profit. Majority of
the revenue and profit is reinvested to sustain and grow the enterprise. In many instances, the mission and the business
are fused inextricably.
BPI SINAG
BPI Foundation, through its iconic program called BPI Sinag, supports social enterprises by testing, shaping and
encouraging their ideas and be the natural bridge to flow down wealth to the Bottom Of the Pyramid (BOP) via an
annual business plan competition which discovers, capacitates, recognizes and supports social enterprises who can
create solutions to specific social problems that can generate defined social
impacts to the community and consequently help uplift Filipino lives from
poverty.
Sinag, translated into English, means light. BPI Foundation aims, through
this program, to bring light to the communities that need support through
sustainable development. It also aims to enlighten the public on a new, more

inclusive way of doing business and how new business models are relevant to
solving our societal issues today.
BPI SINAG U
Realizing the importance of nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit among Filipinos while they are still young, BPI
Foundation has created a new category for BPI Sinag targeting student entrepreneurs, also called the BPI Sinag U.
The BPI Sinag U is a nationwide university students competition that aims to foster awareness among students about
the potential of creating change through social entrepreneurship. This is also in support of the governments Youth
Entrepreneurship Act, which aims to encourage entrepreneurship and promote the growth of young entrepreneurs
nationwide.

Winners of the competition will be assisted, through mentoring and grants, in converting their business ideas into actual
profitable businesses.

university during the BPI Sinag Regional Bootcamp.

IN-SCHOOL SELECTION
1. At the beginning of the school year, the deans office of the designated college of the Partner University, shall
launch the BPI Sinag U in-school competition. The launch can be in the form of an issuance of circular, a meeting
or an event. The university is given the liberty to decide on the design/format of the in-school competition, for
as long as they incorporate the minimum requirements set by BPI SINAG U organizers in terms of the (a)
application process, (b) selection process, and (c) selection process, as explained below.
2. Since this is a nationwide competition, the Partner University should ensure that they attract high-quality
entries, which will have high chances of bringing the university to the regional and national levels of the
competition.
To achieve this, the Partner University is encouraged to conduct, aside from the launch, a massive information
campaign about the BPI Sinag U in-school competition. Marketing efforts can range from mini-events to online
campaigns. BPI Foundation will provide templates for marketing collaterals which the partner university can use
in their marketing efforts.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Interested student team/s must apply through the BPI Sinag website, through a

SELECTION PROCESS
1. Form a Screening Committee, composed of either in-house university professors, alumni or partners with
relevant experience in entrepreneurship.
4. Arrange for the meeting of members of the screening committee for deliberation and shortlisting of entries
5. Organize an in-school pitch day where shortlisted student teams will make a 7-minute pitch to the screening
committee, out of which the Top 3 student teams will be selected.
6. The 3 selected student teams shall represent the university during the Regional Bootcamp.

SCHOOL ENDORSEMENT
The university partner, through the dean of the official college administering the in-school selection, shall issue a
certification that the three (3) selected student teams shall represent the university during the Regional Bootcamp.
Once certified, the selected student teams must accomplish the Regional Bootcamp Entry Form through the BPI Sinag
website.
REGIONAL BOOTCAMP
The BPI Sinag U Regional Bootcamp is a 3-day, live-in learning workshop wherein student teams will acquire the
knowledge, skills and tools that would enable them to transform their social enterprise ideas into full-blown business
plans.
Student teams endorsed by their respective universities will attend BPI Sinag Bootcamps to be held in their respective
regions:
After the Regional Bootcamps, the student teams will be required to submit, through the BPI Sinag website, their
business plans and investment profiles. A selection committee will evaluate the entries and will select 5 winners for each
region. The regional winners will be eligible to join the 5-day all-expense-paid BPI Sinag U National Bootcamp to be held
in Manila.
NATIONAL BOOTCAMP
MOCK PITCH
A day before the Pitch Day, a Mock Pitch will be held. This will serve a dress rehearsal whereby each team finalist will
present their business plans before a Panel of Mentors. Mentors will be giving specific comments and feedback with the
aim of improving the presentation and increase the chances of the student teams to make it to the National Winners
Circle.

PITCH DAY AND AWARDING
The Pitch Day is the culminating event of the competition portion of the BPI Sinag
U. The 20 finalists will present their business plans and before a Panel of Judges
consisting of outstanding industry leaders and eminent social entrepreneurs. The
student teams will also be answering questions from the judges.
Five (5) winners will be declared. The winning student teams will each be receiving
a grant of One Hundred Thousand Pesos (Php100,000.00) which they must
MENTORING
The 20 regional student team winners will undergo a 6-month Mentoring Program to be administered by ACSEnt.
During the early stage of the program, BPI Foundation, ACSEnt and the University Partners shall collaborate to form BPI
Sinag Regional Mentors Circles consisting of business management/entrepreneurship faculty members and leading
local entrepreneurs who shall provide continuing mentoring support to BPI SINAG U national and regional winners.
