The State of Berry Production in Serbia y
Berries have special significance in Serbia because they represent an important export product. Serbia is among the leading world countries according to raspberry and blackberry production, whereas strawberry production is less important. Currants and blueberries h bl b i have b been i introduced to production only d d d i l recently.

RASPBERRY
Raspberry (Rubus ideaus L.) is a leading berry in Serbia, and together with blackberry, plum and sour cherry, is one of the p p y p most exported products. In recent years, its production has ranged between 60,000 and 70,000 t. It is estimated that there are about 15,000 producers, and that raspberry areas occupy about 15,500 ha.

Production is mainly realised in the hilly-mountainous regions of western and south-western Serbia. .3ha) is one of the greatest obstacles to yield increase and modernization of the production.2 – 0. A great fragmentation of raspberry fields (0.

Primocane fruiting raspberry cultivars are being slowly introduced into production on the total area of 20 ha ha. Trellis is not required ! The closeness of market and attractive price. The export of fresh raspberries from Serbia is negligible. negligible Bad organization of harvesting and lack of producers’ and exporters’ interests in this business are the main reasons for this state. possibility of out of season raspberry production are major reasons which could contribute t th d ti j hi h ld t ib t to the orientation of our raspberry production and placement toward that goal. .

Blackberry production should be maintained at the same level with the introduction of new cultivars. production should b xp nd d . . ith intention to increase export of fresh raspberries and to extend h t d harvesting s s sti season. .The level of strawberry production should be enhanced with intensification of growing systems.Cu nt and blu b Currant nd blueberry p ducti n sh uld be expanded. .CONCLUSIONS -R Raspberry will remain a l di b b ill i leading berry i S bi with in Serbia.

what will be of special interest to us in the future are the f f following subjects: g j • To intoduce new berries: chockeberry and cranberry (lingonberry) • To implement GLOBAL GAP standard for q quality assurance y • To apply mechanized harvesting • To build smaller processing facilities • Permanent training of producers • More aggressive marketing with goal to enhance berries consumption consumption.. .Challenges and plans Besides all mentioned.
