Nomination Deadline
1he deadline is 27 June 2008. Nomination íorms and all support documentation must be
postmarked no later than the deadline date.
1he (anada (ouncil will not accept late nominations or those submitted bv íax or email.
Incomplete submissions and those that do not meet the stated requirements will not be presented
to the peer assessment committee.

Description of
Awards
1he Go·ernor General`s Awards in Visual and Media Arts are (anada`s
íoremost distinctions íor excellence in ·isual and media arts. 1hese awards were
created in 1999 through a partnership oí the (anada (ouncil íor the Arts and
then Go·ernor General oí (anada. Roméo LeBlanc. who agreed to commit
Go·ernment louse to hosting the gala ceremonv at Rideau lall to honour the
laureates. in perpetuitv. 1he (anada (ouncil íunds and administers the awards.
As a result oí a >1.5 million donation to the (anada (ouncil írom 1he Samuel
and Saidve Broníman lamilv loundation. the Saidve Broníman Award became
a Go·ernor General`s Award. reser·ed íor íine craít artists as oí
March 200¯. 1he name Saidve Broníman Award` is retained under the o·erall
banner oí the Go·ernor General` Awards in Visual and Media Arts.
Up to eight awards will be a·ailable annuallv:
up to six awards oí >25.000 each will be a·ailable íor distinguished Artistic
Achie·ement in ·isual and´or media arts.
one award oí >25.000 will be a·ailable íor the Saidve Broníman Award íor
excellence in the íine craíts. and
one award oí >25.000 will be a·ailable íor Outstanding (ontribution to
recognize an indi·idual or group íor outstanding contribution to ·isual
and´or media arts. in a ·olunteer or proíessional capacitv. through
philanthropv. board go·ernance. communitv outreach acti·ities. or as a
director oí an organization. curator. programmer. educator. writer or
dealer´distributor.
No awards will be made posthumouslv: thev must be gi·en to persons who are
li·ing as oí the deadline date.

Lligibility
Nominees
Nominees must be (anadian citizens or permanent residents oí (anada. All
(anada (ouncil programs and prizes are accessible to Aboriginal artists and
artists oí di·erse cultural and regional communities oí (anada.
A nomination is not eligible íor the competition ií either the nominee or the
nominator has íailed to submit anv outstanding íinal report or íinancial
accounting íor a pre·ious (anada (ouncil grant or award. Outstanding íinal
reports íor anv pre·ious (anada (ouncil grant or award must be appro·ed bv
the program oííicer.
Members oí the board oí the (anada (ouncil íor the Arts are not eligible to be
considered íor this prize during the course oí their terms as members and íor six
months íollowing the end oí their term.
No indi·idual mav be awarded the Go·ernor General`s Awards in Visual and
Media Arts. including the Saidve Broníman Award. more than once. Pre·ious
winners oí the Saidve Broníman Award. who won prior to March 200¯. are
eligible íor a Go·ernor General`s Award in Visual and Media Arts 2009 but
cannot be considered íor the Saidve Broníman Award.

Artistic Achievement Awards
Nominees must be proíessional artists who ha·e maintained a practice in the
·isual or media arts o·er a signiíicant period oí time and who ha·e recei·ed
national as well as international recognition. Awards recognize signiíicant
contributions to both the historical de·elopment and contemporarv practice in
the ·isual and media arts.
1his award is designed íor recognition oí indi·idual achie·ement rather than íor
recognition oí the work oí an organization. but it mav also recognize artistic
partnerships or small ensembles in which each artist meets the eligibilitv
requirements íor the prize.
1he (anada (ouncil deíines a proíessional artist as someone who has specialized
training in the íield not necessarilv in academic institutions,. who is recognized
as such bv her or his peers artists working in the same artistic tradition, and
who has a historv oí public presentation.
(andidates must ha·e created an outstanding. distinguished bodv oí work in
·isual and´or media arts in at least one oí the íollowing categories:

Saidye Bronfman Award
1he Saidve Broníman Awards is (anada`s íoremost distinction íor excellence in
the íine craíts. line (raít` is the term used to deíine an area oí acti·itv in the
craíts that is írequentlv directed towards exhibition and´or sale in a gallerv-like
setting. 1his acti·itv in·ol·es high le·els oí technical expertise. knowledge oí the
historical tradition and de·elopment oí their craít. íine craít practitioners
demonstrate new concepts and inno·ation that expand the boundaries oí
materialitv and technique through their work.

birthdav. the prize is awarded annuallv to an exceptional craítsperson.

Process
(andidates mav not applv íor the prize. 1hev must be nominated bv an eligible
nominator. Nominees need not be írom the pro·ince. territorv or the artistic

Nominators are responsible íor gathering the required documentation and
submitting it with the (anada (ouncil`s oííicial nomination íorm. 1hev must
ensure that the documentation complies with the iníormation set out in this
iníormation sheet and that the submission is postmarked no later than the
deadline.
Nominators mav nominate up to two indi·iduals per vear. but onlv one íor each
categorv i.e. one íor an Artistic Achie·ement Award and´or Saidve Broníman
Award and´or Outstanding (ontribution Award,. Nominations will not be
carried o·er to the next vear. Nominators who wish to re-nominate a candidate
must complete a new nomination íorm and submit the required documents and
support material each time. 1he (anada (ouncil mav submit additional
nominations. with appropriate documentation. to the peer assessment

Assessment Process
A peer assessment committee. composed oí experienced ·isual arts. íine craít
and media arts proíessionals selected íor their expertise. assesses the
nominations. 1he committee. which is selected bv the (anada (ouncil íor the
Arts. mav include up to two experts írom outside (anada. Members are also
chosen to ensure íair representation oí gender. the two oííicial languages.
Aboriginal peoples. the ·arious regions and cultures oí (anada. as well as the
·arious tvpes oí artistic practices within the ·isual arts. media arts and íine craít
communities.
1he peer assessment committee mav decide not to award one or more oí the
eight awards in a gi·en vear. ií it íeels that an insuííicient number oí the
nominees meets the criteria.
Assessment Criteria
A kev element oí the assessment process íor the Artistic Achie·ement awards
and Saidve Broníman Award is ·iewing the slides. digital material or audio·isual
materials oí the candidate`s bodv oí work. 1he qualitv oí the slides. digital

1he principal assessment criteria íor these categories are the excellence oí the
work. co·ering all aspects oí aesthetics. creati·itv. inno·ation and technical
masterv. and the candidate`s contribution to the ad·ancement oí the practices oí

1he principal assessment criterion íor the Outstanding (ontribution Award is
the qualitv and extent oí the contribution bv the nominees, to contemporarv

Is personal information protected?
1he Pri·acv Act protects vour personal iníormation and pro·ides vou with a right to access vour
iníormation. 1he (anada (ouncil maintains vour personal iníormation in Personal Iníormation Bank
(A( PPU 025. All other iníormation mav be accessible to others under the Access to Iníormation Act.
Note that on a coníidential basis. the (anada (ouncil íor the Arts mav share iníormation related to
applications and awards with oííicials in other arts and cultural industrv íunding agencies. to assist with
program planning and application e·aluation.

When will the laureates and their nominators be notified of the results of the application?
1he laureates and their nominators will be notiíied pri·atelv oí the results approximatelv five months
aíter the deadline date. 1he awards ceremonv and a gala dinner in honour oí the laureates will be held
in the spring oí 2009 at Rideau lall. 1he media announcement will take place in the two-week period
prior to the ceremonv. Non-winning nominees and their nominators will be notiíied oí the results bv
letter.

What are the conditions of receiving the award?
Recipients are requested to ad·ise the (anada (ouncil ií thev intend to mount an exhibition as a result
oí the award. 1he laureates must participate íullv in all award e·ents. including media coníerences and
inter·iews. ceremonies and other related e·ents. 1hev must also allow photographs and public
iníormation about themsel·es to be used íor promotion oí the awards and in other (anada (ouncil
promotional initiati·es.
1he laureates and nominators must agree to keep the results coníidential until the date oí the public
announcement. at which time all participants will be notiíied in writing oí the results oí the
competition.
