RESOLUTION

A RESOLUTION DIRECTING STAFF TO WORK DILIGENTLY WITH LEGISLATORS
REPRESENTING FAUQUIER COUNTY TO AMEND THE VIRGINIA CODE TO CREATE
BETTER LAWS TO HELP STOP DISTRACTED DRIVING IN OUR COMMUNITY

WHEREAS, present Virginia law is insufficient to allow law enforcement to stop or deter
distracted driving; and

WHEREAS, distracted driving is defined as driving while doing another activity that takes
a driver’s attention away from driving and it is a significant and serious danger to everyone in our
community; and

WHEREAS, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in 2013 nearly one in five
crashes with injury, or approximately 18%, involved distracted driving; and

WHEREAS, over eight people are killed and 1,161 are injured daily as the result of
distracted driving nationwide; and

WHEREAS, Fauquier County has directly experienced increasing numbers of motor
vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers over the past several years and the numbers of people
injured or killed as the result of motor vehicle accidents involving a distracted driver are increasing
dramatically throughout Fauquier County, the Commonwealth of Virginia and nationwide; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors this 13th day of July 2017, That
County staff be, and is hereby, directed to work diligently with the County’s legislative delegation
to seek the creation of better laws to allow law enforcement to help stop distracted driving in the
community.
