Adam Smith developed the principles of capitalism, economic doctrine that today governs
virtually everyone. Born in 1723 in Kirkcaldy, north of Edinburgh, she developed however
all activity in the capital. He enjoyed a quiet life, and in 1776 published the work for which
will be remembered for eternity, "The Wealth of Nations", which settles the principle of
economic liberalism: the librecompetencia the market. But if this is his best-known work

David Hume.
Born in 1711 in Edinburgh, it is not only one of the key figures of the Scottish
Enlightenment, but of all Western philosophy. His philosophy, empiricism, is based on the
need to perceive with the senses something to check its veracity, something that is
paradjicoen city of ghosts and mysteries. Atheist, ordered to be buried with the epitaph
"Born in 1711, Dead in 1776. Leaving posterity to add the rest" in a humble grave. His

But if Edinburgh has always stood out as a literary city, we can not forget his contribution
to science. On March 3, 1847 Alexander Graham Bell was born here. Both his mother and
his wife were deaf, which since childhood led him to Alexander to work in the field of
acoustics. Already at an early age he managed to develop a system to communicate with
his mother, deep voice speaking it on his forehead, causing the skull to act as a sounding
board. Applying his knowledge in this field, he came the invention for which he will be
remembered for posterity: the telephone. Like so many Scots emigrated to the United
States, to Canada, which is considered both deEscocia, son of these two nations.

Mary, Queen of Scots, is perhaps the best known figure in Scottish history. His life was
always marked by tragedies and romances, much more dramatic than any legend.
He was born on December 8, 1542, a week before his father, King James V of Scotland,
died. Little Maria, just six days old, was proclaimed queen of Scotland, with James
Hamilton, Earl of Arran II as the next in line and regent of the kingdom during the minority
of the queen.
Mary was sent to France in 1548 to become the wife of the Dauphin, the young prince heir
to the French throne, in order to ensure a Catholic alliance against England. In 1561, after
the dolphin died, while still a teenager, Mary returned to Scotland, a beautiful young
widow.
Scotland at this time was in the middle of the Reformation and a deepening divide
between Catholics and Protestants. A Protestant husband to Mary seemed the best
chance for stability. Mary fell passionately in love Henry, Lord Darnley, but was
unsuccessful. Darnley was a weak man and soon became an alcoholic, meanwhile,
Maragobern completely alone and did not give her husband any real authority in the
country.
Darnley became jealous secretary and favorite of Mary, David Riccio. Along with
other henchmen he murdered Darnley Mary Riccio front of Holyrood House. At that
time, she was six months pregnant.
His son, the future King James VI of Scotland and I of England, was baptized in the
Catholic faith in Stirling Castle. This caused alarm among Protestants.
Lord Darnley later died in mysterious circumstances in Edinburgh, when the house
where he was staying exploded one night in February 1567. His body was found
after the explosion, in the garden of the house, but it was discovered that had been
throttled!
Mary was then attracted by James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, and rumors
abounded in court, she was pregnant with him. Bothwell was charged with the
murder of Darnley, but was found not guilty. Shortly after he was acquitted, Mary
and Bothwell were married. Lords of the Congregation did not pass the link and
imprisoned the queen in Leven Castle, where she gave birth to twins, stillborn.
Bothwell, meanwhile, had said goodbye to Mary and fled to Dunbar. She never
saw him again. He died in Denmark, in a state of insanity in 1578.
In May 1568 Mary escaped Leven Castle. He assembled a small army, but was
defeated at Langside by the Protestant faction. Mary fled to England.
