2. The atomic weight of hydrogen is 1 gram per gram-atom. What is the mass of a hydrogen atom?

3. A car starts from rest and has a constant acceleration of 3 fps3. Determine the average velocity during

the first 10 seconds of motion.

4. A ball is dropped from a height of 60 meters above ground. How long does it take to hit the ground?

5. The gravity acceleration at equatorial sea level is g = 32.008fps2 and its variation is -0.003 fps2 per

1000 ft ascent. Find the height in miles above this point for which the weight of a given man os

decreased by 7%.

6. A 3-kg rock is thrown upward with a force of 200 N at a location where the local gravitational

acceleration is 9.79 m/s2. Determine the acceleration of the rock, in m/s2.

7. Determine the distance traveled by a particle between a time interval of 0.2 second to 0.3 second if

its velocity is V = 12t4 + 7/t, where V is in cm/s and t is in seconds.

8. The temperature of a system drops by 45F during a cooling process. Express this drop in

temperature in K, R, and C.

9. Electric power is to be generated by installing a hydraulic turbinegenerator at a site 70 m below the

free surface of a large water reservoir that can supply water at a rate of 1500 kg/s steadily. If the

mechanical power output of the turbine is 800 kW and the electric power generation is 750 kW,

determine the combined turbinegenerator efficiency of this plant. Neglect losses in the pipes

10. Determine the power required for a 1150-kg car to climb a 100-m-long uphill road with a slope of

30o (from horizontal) in 12 s (a) at a constant velocity, (b) from rest to a final velocity of 30 m/s, and

(c) from 35 m/s to a final velocity of 5 m/s. Disregard friction, air drag, and rolling resistance.

11. An insulated rigid tank initially contains 1.5 lbm of helium at 80oF and 50 psia. A paddle wheel with a

power rating of 0.02 hp is operated within the tank for 30 min. Determine (a) the final temperature

and (b) the final pressure of the helium gas. Take cv of helium to be 0.753 Btu/lbm oF.

12. A garden hose attached with a nozzle is used to fill a 10-gal bucket. The inner diameter of the hose is

2 cm, and it reduces to 0.8 cm at the nozzle exit. If it takes 50 s to fill the bucket with water,

determine (a) the volume and mass flow rates of water through the hose, and (b) the average

velocity of water at the nozzle exit

13. A perfect gas is expanded polytropically with an initial volume and temperature of 0.06 m3 and

147oC respectively. If the final volume and temperature are 0.21 m3 and 21oC respectively, what is

the index of the expansion?

14. There are withdrawn 200 ft3 of air measured at 15 psia and 90 F from a 50-ft3 tank containing air

initially at 100 psia and 140 F. What is the pressure of the air remaining in the tank if its temperature

is 130 F?

15. Air enters a compressor operating at steady state with a pressure of 14.7 lbf/in.2 and a volumetric

flow rate of 8 ft3/s. The air velocity in the exit pipe is 225 ft/s and the exit pressure is 150 lbf/in.2 If

each unit mass of air passing from inlet to exit undergoes a process described by pV1.3 = constant,

determine the diameter of the exit pipe, in inches.

16. Air enters a compressor operating at steady state at 1.05 bar, 300 K, with a volumetric flow rate of 12

m3/min and exits at 12 bar, 400 K. Heat transfer occurs at a rate of 2 kW from the compressor to its

surroundings. Assuming the ideal gas model for air and neglecting kinetic and potential energy

effects, determine the power input, in kW.

17. Air enters a compressor operating at steady state with a pressure of 14.7 lbf/in.2, a temperature of

80 oF, and a volumetric flow rate of 18 ft3/s. The air exits the compressor at a pressure of 90 lbf/in.2

Heat transfer from the compressor to its surroundings occurs at a rate of 9.7 Btu per lb of air flowing.

The compressor power input is 90 hp. Neglecting kinetic and potential energy effects and modeling

air as an ideal gas, determine the exit temperature, in oF.

18. Air is compressed at steady state from 1 bar, 300 K, to 6 bar with a mass flow rate of 4 kg/s. Each

unit of mass passing from inlet to exit undergoes a process described by pV1.27 = constant. Heat

transfer occurs at a rate of 46.95 kJ per kg of air flowing to cooling water circulating in a water jacket

enclosing the compressor. If kinetic and potential energy changes of the air from inlet to exit are

negligible, determine the compressor power, in kW.

19. Five kmols of air initially at one atmosphere and 299 K are compressed isothermally to 8

atmospheres. How much total heat is removed during the compression?

20. an iceberg sits below the surface of the water. Suppose that the density of an iceberg is (uniformly)

0.92 g/mL, and that of the ocean is 1.02 g/mL. What fraction of the iceberg's volume is hidden below

the ocean surface?

21. Two electrically charged pith balls, each having a mass of 0.2 g, are suspended from light threads of

equal length. Determine the resultant horizontal force of repulsion, F, acting on each ball if the

measured distance between them is r = 200 mm.

22. A particle moves along a straight line with an acceleration of a = 5/ (3s1/3 + s5/2) m/s2, where s is in

meters. Determine the particles velocity when s = 2m, if it starts from rest when s = 1m.

23. The 20-kg crate is subjected to a force having a constant direction and a magnitude F = 100 N. When

s = 15 m, the crate is moving to the right with a speed of 8 m/s. Determine its speed when s = 25 m.

The coefficient of kinetic friction between the crate and the ground is k = 0.25.

24. A man hits the 50-g golf ball such that it leaves the tee at an angle of 40 with the horizontal and

strikes the ground at the same elevation a distance of 20 m away. Determine the impulse of the club

on the ball. Neglect the impulse caused by the balls weight while the club is striking the ball.

25. A gun is shut into a 0.50 KN block which is hanging from a rope of 1.8 m long. The weight of the bullet

is equal 5N with the muzzle velocity of 320 m/s. How long will the box swing after it was hit by the

bullet?
