Abstrac t: T his paper reports a study to exam ine to what ex tent adv anced Chinese EFL learners are ab le to m ake on-
line and o f-
f line correc tions in the ir own inter language sy stem. The study indicates that the ir abilities to correct erro rs
are lim ited and their on- line corrections are few er than their of-f line co rrections. H owever, mo re than one th ird o f the
subjects show an opposite pa ttern, that is, the ir of-
f line corrections a re fewer than their on- line corrections. M oreo-
ver, they corrected mo re linguistic erro rs than content errors. In regard to lingu istic errors, they co rrected m ore g ram-
m atica l and lex ica l erro rs on line than off line wh ile they corrected m ore phonolog ica l erro rs on line than off line.
