ROAD SAFETY
You will find Allamakee
County has some very hilly
geography which, while cre-
ating some beautiful scenery,
also makes roads that are full
of curves, steep inclines and
blind corners for both you and
vehicles coming towards you
on the other side of the road.
This is especially true for Sat-
urdays ride. So, please ensure
you stay within your lane on the
roadways as you make your
way through the county and be
cautious when you find yourself
going downhill on the steeper
roads, as this often contains a
series of curves, blind corners
and, at times, deep ditches. To
assist in your safety, we plan to
post caution signs at several
of these locations in an effort
to keep you aware of the road
ahead.
RAILROAD SAFETY
Please be aware that as you
ride through Allamakee Coun-
ty you will be passing through
three communities that have
active railroad tracks. These
three communities are Post-
ville, Harpers Ferry and Lan-
sing.
Postville will be your first Alla-
makee County town Friday and
will require you to cross over a
set of tracks as you exit town
going north on Highway 51.
This intersection has warning
lights and crossing arms and
will have an additional warning
sign just before you reach the
tracks. That should the extent
of your railroad crossing for Fri-
days venture into Allamakee
County.
Harpers Ferry will be a pass-
through town Saturday and
will require riders to cross the
same set of railroad tracks two
times; once as you enter town
and a second time as you exit
town on a different street. The
railroad track crossing as you
enter town has only warning
lights and no crossing arms;
so to assist in your safety a
Railroad Crossing Guard is
planned to be posted at this lo-
cation to assist bikers in cross-
ing over this set of tracks. The
second railroad track crossing
as you depart Harpers Ferry
has no warning lights or cross-
ing arms and will also have a
Railroad Crossing Guard post-

this second set of tracks. Also,
both sites will have addition-
al warning signs to make you
aware of the railroad tracks as
you approach them.
Lansing is the final destina-
tion and tire-dip town Saturday
and will provide two unique rail-
road situations for riders as you
enter into town. You will first
find yourself riding right next
to the railroad tracks as both
the road and railroad tracks
parallel the river going north,
side-by-side. Along this route,
warning cones, rope fencing
and warning signs will be set up
approximately 15 feet from the
railroad tracks once you enter
into Lansing to help keep you a
safe distance from them.
Additionally, the final 300
feet of railroad track before you
come to the Main Street dip site
will have snow fencing to keep
you from accidently cross-
ing onto the RR tracks as the
street and tracks are level with
each other at this point. Finally,
Railroad Crossing Guards will
be established at the two dip
site locations currently planned
along the railroad tracks.

FOR RAGBRAI XLV PARTICIPANTS
GENERAL
Should an emergency arise
during RAGBRAI XLV, the fol-
lowing plan will be followed to
provide emergency procedures
for RAGBRAI XLV participants
during their time in Allamakee
County. This plan covers the
two primary concerns during
RAGBRAI XLV: severe weather
and an evacuation due to other
non-related emergencies.
Weather forecasts and
updates, as needed, will be
posted at each communi-
ty information center to in-
clude safety and evacuation
procedures. These informa-
tion boards will be labeled
EMERGENCY MANAGE-
MENT INFORMATION. Addi-
tionally, for those communi-
ties with campsites, they will
also be posted there.
NOTE: Weather support for
Allamakee County is provided
by the National Weather Ser-
vice located in La Crosse, WI.

Severe weather watches
and warnings are and will be
issued by the National Weather
Service located in La Crosse,
WI and are defined as follows:
a. A watch means that con-
ditions are favorable for the
formation of severe weather
in a designated area. Prepara-
tions should be made to protect
yourself and persons around
you.
b. A warning means that a se-
vere thunderstorm, tornado or
other severe weather has been
spotted in the area. Immediate
action must be taken to get to a
safe location or shelter.
Watches and warnings will
be transmitted over local radio,
TV and by the ALERT IOWA
system via your cell phone. Ad-
ditionally, community warning
sirens will be activated based
on the type of severe weather
warning issued as described
in the Severe Thunderstorm

LIGHTNING SAFETY
With lightning, there is no
safe place outside when thun-
derstorms are in the area and if
you hear thunder, you are prob-
ably within striking distance
of the storm; so remember,

this is the safest location during
a severe thunderstorm as there
is little you can do to noticeably
reduce your risk if you are out-
side in a storm with lightning.
If you cannot get indoors,
you can take the following ac-

from tall, isolated trees or other
tall objects.
If in a wooded area, stay
near a lower stand of trees.
If in a group, spread out

Hairball is described as
much more than just a tribute
band; more like a rock and
roll experience. The hard rock
tribute band based out of Min-
nesota has been paying hom-
age the last 16 years to such
world-renowned rock and roll
arena acts as Van Halen, KISS,
Motley Crue, Queen, Journey,
Aerosmith, Poison and more,
but goes far beyond just play-
ing their music. Those experi-
encing a Hairball performance
will be treated to what amounts
to a new concert several times
over from those legendary rock
and roll groups, complete with
costume changes and a stage
show that has made them the
most sought after musical per-
formance on the RAGBRAI
tour.
Vocalists Bobby, Steve and
Joe Dandy combine their lyrical
impressions with the rocking
musical talents of Freaky on
the electric bass, Blake on the
drums, and Happy on the lead
guitar to provide what has been
described as the most drop-
dead accurate depiction of all
the great hairband music pro-
duced in the 1980s. Combine
that musical drive down mem-
ory lane with a stage show fea-
turing lights, smoke, pyrotech-
nics and some other surprises,
and you have a performance
that will top off your Week Be-
hind Handlebars with the en-
ergy and enthusiasm to power
the remaining hills of Allama-
kee County and start the ride

Variety to award 150 new bikes to children across the state as
part of RAGBRAI, including here in Waukon
Variety- the Childrens Char-
ity will be awarding 150 bikes,
locks and helmets to underprivi-
leged and at-risk children during
RAGBRAI 2017. That awarding
of bikes will take place in Wau-
kon Friday, July 28 as part of
this years RAGBRAI festivities,
beginning at 4 p.m. in the City
parking lot between Kwik Star
and the Houg Insurance/Houg
Chiropractic location.
As part of Varietys Bikes
for Kids program, Variety has
teamed up with RAGBRAI and
will present brand new bikes,
locks and helmets to children in
the four overnight towns of Clear
Lake, Charles City, Cresco and
Waukon along this years RAG-
BRAI route.
Variety believes every child
deserves to ride and is thrilled
to collaborate with RAGBRAI for
the second year to present bikes
to deserving children, said Sheri
McMichael, Executive Director
of Variety. RAGBRAI is a natu-

Waukon RAGBRAI
Youth Art Contest
winners
The Waukon RAGBRAI Youth Art Contest
was held for local kindergarten through sixth
grade students in conjunction with RAGB-
RAIs July 28 overnight visit to Waukon. The
contest offered area youth the opportunity
to use their creativity to make original art-
work that reflects their impressions of RAG-
BRAI.
Winners in each of three different grade
categories, along with an overall winner,
were announced at the June 28 town meet-
ing held at Iron Ridge Church in Waukon. Willa Troendle

sen as the overall local winner and will now
compete for a $350 prize in the Statewide

When You Arrive
As you come into town, get ready for the best view of the upper
Mississippi anywhere by stopping at the Allamakee County Drift-
less Area Education and Visitor Center. This brand new structure
faces straight north up the river and gives you the best perspective
of the Black Hawk Bridge. The Center will educate visitors on the
unique features of the Driftless Area and Lansing. Stop here for a
quick rest and refresh.
Water stands will be along the route into Lansing and once you
reach the historic downtown area. Pull over and relax at the Lan-
sing Sports Complex before venturing into the Festival Area. This is
also the area where the RAGBRAI luggage drop-off will be located.
