Pg. 2: Notes & Reflections I read the following articles to supplement my hours: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/flexible-seating-student-centered-classroom-kayla-delzerIn this article on Flexible Seating and Student-Entered Classroom Redesign, I have found that as adults, we love to
What have you learned from these leadership responsibilities?

The leadership experiences have been challenging to fit into my daily routine, but through them I have learned many things that an administrator has responsibility over on a daily basis. One
leadership responsibility that I found really challenging was being the faculty advisor for my National Elementary Honor Society chapter. Since it was my PBL project, I had to implement it from
start to finish. For the first time ever, I had to create meeting agendas, use Google calendar to invite people to meetings, run the meetings and keep professional norms, create the chapter
guidelines and bylaws, make decisions on who to accept, write a speech, ceremony, and acceptance letters, and many more items. Knowing that I am ultimately in charge of this entire project
was a bit overwhelming to me. I want everything to go off without a hitch and I am depending on others to help me. I have learned that I must delegate things, which I am not always good with. I
usually do many things on my own since I know how i want things to be.

I also learned through my experiences that there are many "behind the scenes" responsibilites that my administrators have that I did not realize. Things as simple as securing the building for
events up to making decisions on how to notify students and parents about a flare gun explosion on a school bus. The saying about "not truly understanding about someone's life until you walk
in their shoes" is one that I have looked at in a whole new way. I have developed more understanding and "grace" when my administrator forgets things or doesn't make a decision I agree with.

Being a science lead teacher this year has also brought its own set of challenges. I am being held responsible for doing some of the tasks that were normally done by the administrators. I have
had to record all the chemicals in the school science kits and creating chemical sheets to keep in the office. I am also learning how to order supplies using a set budget. Our school was given a
set budget to order science supplies this year. In the past, the county has just ordered and sent the same kits and materials to each school. This year, there are some vendors that have been
approved to order from. Each school is allotted a certain amount of money to spend. Our school decided to split the money evenly between grade levels. As a leader, I had to create
spreadsheets, send out information about the products and vendors, gather information and combine it all to submit to the county. This has been challenging to gather all this information and I
had to "pester" a few people to get their orders collected. I have learned that I need deadlines in order for tasks to get completed. I ended up setting my own deadlines with a cushion of time in
order to get all tasks completed in time.

What questions have you had while working on them?

I have not had too many questions except how to fit in all these hours while I am currently teaching. I am a teacher who gives over 100% in all I do, and finding extra time to get these hours done
have been difficult. I have had to decide what I needed to give up in order to be sane. I have also found myself wondering how I was going to get more hours in the middle and high school
settings. I have written to both feeder pattern schools in my community and have gotten no support or response from them. I asked for help for my National Honor Society . . . nothing. I asked
to help volunteer for back to school nights and other meetings . . . nothing. I guess I am not sure what to do next? Since I do not have any personal contacts at these schools since my daughter
graduated six years ago, I am not sure where to get help with this.

I have also questioned myself many times on whether this is the avenue that I would like to go with my career. I go back and forth about whether I truly want to be a teacher leader where I can
work with teachers and the students daily, or an administrative leader. At my school, we have a new assistant principal who just left the classroom and I often ask him how the transition has
gone. He says that the job is different than he expected but he is getting a handle on things. The thing he misses the most, is the fun that he had in the classroom with the students. I question
myself on whether I will feel the same way he does or not.

What are some connections you've seen between these projects and the coursework you have been doing?

In my 509 class, we have focused on the many aspects of a school that affect student learning. From the curriculum and extra-curricular classes down to Title 1 and Special Education. My first
PBL project for the 504 class focused on those students who are high achieving and have good citizenship. Through this group, students are required to keep up their grades, conduct, and
participate in a community service project. I have read that keeping the community involved in the school events creates a better partnership. Having the school partnerships in turn brings
volunteers and support when the school is in need of help. By creating at least once service learning project a year, this will showcase the wonderful student leaders we have at our school and
how they can help the community surrounding our school using real project based learning. The students will locate a need and then research how to meet that need with a truly authentic
audience. In my readings, I learned that in order for learning to be meaningful, it must be authentic and integrated with different subject areas.

My second PBL project focused on using data to create curriculum to help struggling special education students. I did learn about the process of how a special education student is referred
and the process that follows if a student is found to need testing or ultimately found eligible for special education services. Many of these students are performing below grade level in reading,
but are expected to take and pass standardized tests that are on the grade level in which they are supposed to achieving. This is so frustrating that we design specialized learning for these
students, but they do not have a specialized test to see if they are making progress. I decided to look at this population of students and see where they struggled the most on the spring SOL
test. I saw that by focusing on certain parts of the test, we can really hit these concepts hard in small groups to help when they test again. I cannot change the level of reading, but hopefully
help with concepts that our school has struggled with. I have also found that using computer websites and technology has made the learning fun for these students. Doing a quiz using the
Quizziz website instead of a paper/pencil quiz was more engaging too.
