Design of isolated footing

Reference S.N. Calculation Remarks

1. Known data:
Load on column (P) = 660.3606 KN
Diameter of reinforcement bars () =20 mm
Bearing capacity of soil (BC) = 150 KN/m2
Unit weight of earth = 20 KN/m3
fck = 20 N/mm2
fy = 500 N/mm2
Size of column = 400*400 mm2
My=4.958
Mx=.001
Assume base footing to be 1m below the ground level.
2. Soil pressure
Axial load = 660.3606
Approx. area of footing required = P/BC
=4.4024m2
Wt. of footing including earth = 10% of P
= 66.036 KN
Total wt. on soil = 660.3606+66.036
=726.3967 KN
726.3967
Actual area of footing required =
150
= 4.8426 m2
Length (B) = 2.2 m = 2200 mm Since, its is square
Breadth(D) =2.2 m = 2200 mm footing.

726.39671.5
Pu =
2.22.2
= 225.1230 KN

3. Depth calculation
Let, uniaxial moment is towards both direction,X and Y,
Eccentricity about X-direction,ex = Mx/Pu
=0.000004 m
Eccentricity about Y-direction,ey = My/Pu
= 0.022 m Since,eccentricity about
BM at X-X face, X-direction is very
BM at face X-X = 210.5207 KN-m small,so we can neglect
ex.
210.520710^6
d = 0.138202500
= 174.6718 mm
Again,
d = 2*174.6718 Increasing the depth to
= 349.3436 mm resist shear force.
Take d = 500 mm
Taking cover = 50 mm
Overall depth (D) = 550 mm

4. Calculation of reinforcement
1()
Bending moment (Mu) = 0.87
Ast =990.195 mm2
Provide diameter of reinforcement bars = 12 mm
12^2
Ast1 = 4
=113.0976 mm
113.0976
Spacing = 990.195 2200
= 251.2785 mm
113.0976
Ast provided = 2200
150
=1658.765 mm2

5. Check for one way shear

IS 456:2000 Critical section lies at a distance d from the face of the
Cl.34.2.4.1(a) column as in fig.
Calculating shear about Y-Y at a distance d from face of Since, the footing is
column, square and the
Vy-y =209.0149 KN eccentricity is in X-
direction.
IS 456:2000 v = 0.19 N/mm2
Cl.40.1 where c = K *c

IS 456:2000 For d 300 mm,

Cl.40.2.1.1 K=1

100Ast
For M20 concrete and
= 0.15 ,
IS 456:2000 For safe in shear vc.
c = 0.28
Table 19 So,okay.
c = 0.28

6. Check for two way shear

Critical section for two
Vu = 907.2455 KN way shear lies at

distance 2 from each
IS 456:2000 v = 0.001 N/mm2 column as shown in
Cl.31.6.2.1 where c = Ks*c figure.
Ks = (0.5+c) Ks = (0.5+c) 1
where, c =long side/short side of column
Not okay.
Ks = 1.5 1
And,
c = 1.118
So,taking Ks = 1 'c>v.
Therefore, c = 1.118 Hence, safe.

7. Check for development length (Ld)

IS 456:2000 s
Ld = 4
Cl.26.2.1
20.87500
=
41.41.6
= 970.9821 mm
where,
IS 456:2000 s =0.87*fy
Cl.26.2.1.1 = 1.4 * 1.6
Ld for the shortest side
Ld for shortest side > Ldrequired is available from figure.
1368 > Ldrequired . Okay.
